Regina, did you hear anything about the Polish immigrant that arrived in Vancouver recently only to die at the airport? Something certainly went wrong.
Have a good weekend.

Hi, Sophie. Yes, I heard about the Polish man, he was to come to Kamloops. Acctually our Priest was one of the Priests (there where at least three Ministers at the Memorial) We did not go because I would have cried the whole time and there where alot of people attending. It was a very sad situation!

We also had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day. About 25 family and friends. Lots of good food. My daughters and some of the grandchildren and I baked Christmas cookies Friday and Saturday. The kids always have a good time frosting cookies. They are not beautiful but certainly made with lots of love.

Urska S.:
Hello Mrs. Stalzer Wyant

I am sorry, but I think, that we haven't met in Grafenfeld. But we were in touch per e-mail a long time ago, when I was writing my diploma work (Gottscheer old stories).
Maybe you knew my grandfather - Franc Oberc - from Klindorf, his mother was Maria Wolf and she spent few years in America, N.Y. with her husband and two older sons - Matthew and Franck. She returned to Gottschee in 1912 and she never left it... She died in 1968. My grandfather was a real Gottscheer, with his body, mind and soul. From him I learned a lot about the history, people and customs, I know a lot of stories and old sayings. This September we celebrated his 89 birthday and on the next day he passed away.... I am so sorry. He was always asking me, if there is a possibility to find out, if Richard Samide, born in 1917 or 1919 in Klindorf is still alive. During the war he moved to N.Y., but they lost the contact. They were best friends when they were young. His brother Valter Samide was killed in Altlag as hostage, my grandfather was brought as prisoner of war to Minsk / Ex-Russia....

And like the old Gottscheer would say:
Andre (30.11.) bringt Schnee, am Mikla (06.12.)ist er schon da - I wish you all, that St. Nicolaus would bring you a nice present tomorrow morning and that it would snow!!!

Hello to everyone...it's been awhile. I've just ordered my Christmas treats from Dinkel's Bakery of Chicago. With our youngest getting married this coming week and my nephews cancer battle (he's making great strides) I have little time to bake. I will become a grandmother with the marriage of our daughter. Lilly is 8 years old and Lindsay 7. They are wonderful girls and I am looking forward to watching them grow. A peaceful holiday season to all.

Hi Frank and you're right...I haven't heard from Paul in ages.....did you get a reply Trix? To answere your questions...my nephew is the son of my sister and is also my godson. He is 29 years old and was diagnosed with non-seminoma testicular cancer. He underwent an 8 hour retro-peritoneal lymph node dissection where they found where the cancer was found to have spread to the lymph nodes closest to the aorta. He will be undergoing chemo treatments starting soon. He has much to fight for...a wonderful wife, 2 year old son, and another child on the way. He is young and strong which will help in his fight. I haven't yet made my reservations for the meeting but wouldn't miss it for anything. I haven't yet had my time off approved but will be there all the same. Looking forward to meeting you too. Trying to talk my husband into coming too....he hates to fly but I'll keep working on him.

Hilde Kobetitsch:
Hello everyone, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us here in Cleveland, Ohio from the EOUV. We are in the planning stages of the Treffen 2008 and we hope that most of you will be able to attend. We are all looking forward to the treffen.

in regard to the cookies. My mother never used any kind of measurements. She told me to use a little bit of this and a little bit of that. One day we sat down and did some measuring because I gave the recipe to my daughter and sister.

we used about 2 cups of flour
1 cup butter, I use the unsalted butter
about 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup sugar (to your liking)
1 egg
1 pack of the Dr. Oetker vanilla sugar

mix the butter, sugar and the egg, and vanilla, make sure that the texture is smooth before you add the flour. Gradually add the flour and mix until very smooth. I normally let it stand for a while or even put it into the refrigerator over night. When you are ready to make the cookies, roll out on a floured cloth, roll out to the thickness of your liking, I normally make it on the thin side. This way they get nice and crisp, you can experiment also. Use any cookie cutter you wish and place on a greased cookie sheet and bake at about 350 degrees. I normally bake the cookies until golden brown, just keep a watch out so not to burn them. This makes quite a few cookies.

When I was a child, my father usually made some Saint Nicholas cookies and put a hole on the top of the cookie so that we could insert a string to hang on the Christmas Tree. Some times the cat would nibble at the cookie and pull the tree down if we did not watch. The cookies were also delicious after the tree was taken down. At home we kept the tree up on February 2nd (Candle Mass day), the cookies were then were appreciated by the children, they were so good and tasty. Happy baking.

Have a wonderful Holiday.

Quick notes to some of the postings.

To Rosemary Quantick, I sent an email but just in case -- you might try to contact the Gottscheer Relief Association in NY. They may be able to help out.

To Urska, not sure if this is a match to the Richard you were posting about --- There is a Richard Samide born in 1917 who died in 2001. He is listed as being born in the US but may have spent some time in Klindorf. I could not find another Richard born in the same time frame. Some were born earlier and others later.

Thanks everyone for your best wishes. I shall tell you a little about what happened. I was divorced 20 years ago and could never get started on an annulment. Then my first husband passed away 3 years ago. My husband of 18 years, Bob, who is not Catholic, was willing to get an annulment so we could be married in the church. Then we discovered his ex had gotten an annulment a few years ago, so the process was greatly speeded up. We only had to do a little paper work. We choose the perfect day, as this weekend was the feast of the Holy Family and our priest had a sermon that went to the heart for my family. I think the good Lord had a hand in it all.

Congratulations to our friends in Slovenia...I heard today that Slovenia has been chosen to "lead" the E.U. in 2008. They've come a long way in 16 years!

Nancy, you are right on. Congratulations are very much in order for the progress that Slovenia has made in the last 16 years. Not only does that progress mean the E.U. but much closer to home, and probably in a much smaller way, look at the good that has been accomplished between the Gottscheers and the Slovenian people. It is cooperation, for an important cause, at its finest. I am both grateful and proud.

Dear Lucy: Mooswald (now Mahovnik) is now in southern Slovenia near the city of Kocevje (originally Gottschee). From 1330 t0 1941, this area was known as Gottschee and the area was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918. Mr. Alois Jonke - The village of Niedertiefenbach is included in a publication by the Gottscheer Heritage and Genealogy Assn. (GHGA) called Village Sketches of Gottschee, 1941. Compiled and Edited by Paul F. Jenner, Deceased.
It gives both a sketch of the layout of the village and the residents by name and house number. You can write Kate Loschke Baum, GHGA Treasurer at thegenie@parkspringsommunities. com for price or further information. I see Peter Jonke lived in house no. 11.

Might you need help with your family tree?

D. Ryan Hoefferle:
Hello Everyone,

It's been a couple of years since I've been on the plaudezimmer and I have regretted it.

I have been doing more research on my name and found that Hoefferle is a Schwabian (I think thats the right term) name that means "Owner of a small farm". The question I have now is how did my schwabian ancestors get to Gottschee?

I do know that the Auerspergs were from Schwabia and brought many workers (around approximately 1000 AD) with them when they settled near Gottschee. However, I do not know where in Schwabia they came from, even if they did bring over the Hoefferle's with them.

I was wondering if this information makes any sense to any of you wonderful Gottscheers? I guess I'm trying to get a feel for when my ancestors arrived in the Gottschee region.

Wendy - YIPPEE FOR YOU AND YOUR DAD. I am so excited for you both. This will be an emotional reunion but one that you will treasure forever. Just remember that all of your Gottscheer ancestors were either baptized, confirmed, married or buried out of the church in Tschermoschnitz. Be sure and visit the cemetery nearby. This is the same church that will celebrate its 500 year anniversary in September o 2009. They are hoping to have enough funds to complete a good part of the restoration work. Safe journey, God Bless and have a GREAT time. I will be with you in thoughts every day and probably sad not to be in your company. Maybe next time.

My grandmother Rose Mauser was born in 1897 in Austria Hungary. Her mother Mathilda Mauser was married to an older serviceman from the Austro Hungarian army. They fled this area, which was perhaps know as Veil linda - maybe veilika. not sure. and went to Vienna. I am so anxious to find out how to see exactly where she was born. I do believe she was Gottscheer. She later in 1901 came to American via Trieste and settled in Brooklyn. The names are Mathilda Mauser, Teresa or Rose 2 years old Mauser, and Mari Mauser (approx. 9). My grandmother's date of birth is 9/3/1897.

Good evening everyone. It has been a long time since I signed on to the Plauderzimmer. Just wanted to know, is everyone getting ready for the Gottscheer Treffen in Cleveland? The planning is now underway and it looks like we are going to have many visitors from all over, even Klagenfurt will be represented. so it should be a wonderful Treffen weekend. Now all we have to do is pray for wonderful weather, but the good Lord normally sends us nice weather when the Gottscheers meet. Right?

Have a wonderful summer and we will talk again soon.

Best wishes to everyone.

Well everyone, due to ongoing "spamdexing" which has become quite a nuisance and an eyesore, I have limited the ability to post to the PZ. You must be a member of the site's secure area and click on the link above in order to post.

You don't need an account to simply read the PZ--only if you wish to add posts of your own.

Many of you who are regulars already have this capability. If you don't, or have forgotten your password, please send me an email: hwk@KT3L.com

Thanks for your patience as we make this a more pleasant experience for everyone.

Also, with this change, the PZ and PZ2 have merged together.

I keep meaning to send you a new picture of the arena site. The site is all clear now, groundbreaking will be in another month I think.

Hello everyone in the Gottscheer Plauderzimmer area. I would like to thank Helmuth for again letting me sign on and reminding me of my password, etc. I must now keep this in my memory bank so that I will not have to bother you again. Thanks again Helmuth.

We in Cleveland hope that you all had a wonderful independence celebration with lots of good food and fire works. The time is getting closer and closer for yet another Gottscheer Treffen. We hope that most of you can attend the Treffen here in Cleveland, and we hope and pray for wonderful weather. We have already made sure that the church is available for us, the food has been decided on, Mr. Joseph Sieder and his wife Maria made certain that your stay here in Cleveland will be pleasant, so you will be able to book your stay at the Embassy Hotel in Beachwood Ohio. If you have any questions in regards to the Hotel, please either send me message at hbrunhilde@aol.com, or send a message to Mrs Sieder at msieder@hotmail.com. We want everyone to have a wonderful stay in Cleveland. We are already happy that most of you are coming. Have a pleasant rest of the summer and don't forget, if there is a question in regard to the Treffen, don't hesitate to ask. Thank you and God bless all of you. Stay well, bis bald.

This is a very special relative to Ridy in Toronto.
She lived in Kukendorf, Gottschee during her youth. A very, very proud, intelligent and neat Gottscheerin who spoke Gottscheabarisch fluently. We spent many happy hours together and she will be deeply missed.
Our sympathy to Ridy and family.

I am a decendant of Anton Nick from Schaflein, Gottschee. He lived in house #2. He had a son named Johann. Johann was my great grandfather. His son John was my grandfather and his son Francis from his second wife Marie Stimpfl was my father. I understand I am related to the Kumps, Kobetitsches, Stimpfls, and some other names that elude me right now. I am interested in meeting relatives online and learning all I can of the culture and family. Anyone can reply.

Guten Abend. The Chiefs didn't play this week. At least they couldn't lose again. Tony Gonzales would like to be traded. I would, too, if I were
Tony. New baby, Max, is 3 weeks old and growing.
Hope all have a wonderful autumn week. Winter is not far away.

Good Morning from a very chilly Waukenabo in Minnesota. We have 7° Fahrenheit but a nice log in the wood stove makes life great.

I have received numerous inquiries as to where a person could write to obtain information on the famous concentration camp Sterntal. I am interest in the list of its prisinors, particularly Gottscheers who were housed there during WWII. Would one have to look at both Slovenia and or Grmany?

Your help will be greatly appreciated. Please write to me at: wyants@frontiernet.net

Greetings to you all. Can someone tell me what the difference is between regular salt and Kosher salt? I am interest in the difference in flavor and/or the strength of the amounts. Are they the same? Why would I want to use Kosher Salt?

Marilu:
The box of kosher salt that I have is Mortons coarse Kosher salt. It says on the box you can use it as you would table salt and canning and pickling salt...teaspoon for teaspoon. It also says for amounts greater than 1/4 cup, increase the amount of kosher salt by one tablespoon for each 1/4 cup.

So I would imagine that Kosher salt is made according to Jewish laws, but no difference in how it is used. Maybe someone else knows more.

We got about 4 inches of snow on sunday and it has been about 5 F. in daytime, 10 below at night until today. It got up to about 40 F. and most of the snow and ice is gone from the main roads.

Happy New Year, fellow Gottschee decendants. I am new to this board - is there anyone out there from New York state? I know a lot of Gottschee immigrants settled in Brooklyn, as did my great grandparents. I only found out this wonderful information several months ago - was always told that they were from Austria/Germany. Since finding them on the Ellis Island website and viewing the ship's manifest that listed "Gottschee" as the place of origin, I have been fascinated. If anyone could suggest any ways to get more information on the history, heritage, customs and language of Gottschee, it would be most appreciated.

Peace of God to All.

I am wondering if any other families from Gottschee have had deaths in their family from multiple myeloma. There are several types, but they are all in the same family of disease. My first cousins had agnogenic myeloid metaplasia(2) and acute myelomonocyctic leukemia (1).

I know that some of you plan to attend the community celebration.Go for it. You will be happy you did. Be sure and take cameras and lots of film. Hi, we had a faily nice day not freezing now.
About Linden trees, they sure have a history in the Gottscheer past, so when our white Birch died we planted the biggest LINDEN tree I could find at the nursery and it is doing great they grow very uniformaly, no pruning needed. In a couple of years it will give us some shade already. Of course the blossoms smell so lovely in the spring and thy make nice tea also.

I have 3 huge linden trees in my yard, they are about 40 years old. I love the smell in the spring, and they would be lovely in the country. They are the messiest trees I have ever seen. First the yard is yellow with pollen, then blossoms fall, then the seed leaves fall all summer. Our lawn is never clean after the seed leaves start to fall. Just wanted those of you who are thinking of planting linden trees, about the mess.

Hi, Trix, about the Linden tree flowers. My Mother picked then and dryed them and used them just like other tea leaves. I think you can buy then in the Health food stores.
Marilu, you are right about the trees needing lots of room to grow, but I hope that the beautyfull scent of the flowers will of set the work, and of course the tea.

Helmuth:
My mother has a linden tree at her home in upstate New York. In addition to everyone else's comments, all true, her linden tree had a unique problem: the trunk started splitting as a heavy limb began to separate from the main trunk. We have a couple of screw eyes and turnbuckle in place to pull the limb back up. We tighten it from time to time to keep the limb close to the trunk.

It does provide great shade, but it is a lot of work, as others have mentioned.

I have a Basswood tree in our yard also, and I know the mess it makes. You don't dare walk outside without shoes after the seeds have dropped. Its a beautiful tree and provides lots of shade but its the seeds that are the problem. Wouldn't be bad if it was planted away from the patio, but the seeds are all over the patio and it must be hard on the dogs feet, I know mine. Birch trees are just as messy too. They drop seeds and the little branches from the wind. But they grow fast though if your looking for shade right away. My favorite tree I have is a silver Maple. Its a small tree but last summer it finally had some runners sprout out of it so I transplanted them and hopefully they have survived the winter. Well I better get back to my cross stitch while Hayden is taking a nap.

Guten Abend. Had a cold, windy Valentine's Day in KCMO. Nice to celebrate, anyway. Sorry I missed last week. Busy. Our 2 great grandsons have been ill with bronchitis - Max is only 5 months old. They are recovering. Praying for an early spring.

Mark Hoenigman:
Trix, I am a certified arborist, specializing in root care, soil health and hazard tree assessment. The problems mentioned about the linden are generally a result of improper young tree development, i.e. pruning. Lindens are great fast growing trees if placed in the proper soil and given proper care. As they develop some pruning may be necessary to develop a dominate central leader and scaffolding branch structure. The tree is headed back (the central leader cut off to about 2/3 of it's original height) in the nursery. This causes the tree to bush out, giving a fuller, bushier look, which most consumers want. As a result these new branches all come out of the central leader/trunk very close to each other. As the tree grows all of these branch attachments in one small area on the trunk make for a weak trunk and branch attachment. The tree then fails, falling or splitting apart. If you are interested I can direct you to some sites to give you more specifics on tree selection, soil preparation, planting and care of the young tree.

Good morning everyone, I could not sleep and decided to send a message to our fellow Gottscheers. The weather here in Cleveland was certainly cold and snowy this year, however we all survived the winter so far and we hope that it will be over soon,

The Gottscheers at the EOUV had a wonderful New Year's eve dinner/dance, and ushered in 2009 with on a happy note. Fasching was equally as nice and enjoyed by everyone who attended. The children in their beautiful and funny costumes were a delight to have present.

Greetings from everyone at the EOUV in Cleveland

Have one more questions, I have a friend who would like to sign on to the Plauderzimmer, I already forgot who should be contacted for the log on, password, etc. Can you reply to me at hbrunhilde@aol.com? Thanking you in advance for your help in this matter. Have a wonderful March,

Orchards are hoping the trees don't bud-out. Many years the early warm spell have been disastrous for
fruit trees. Have a super week. Easter is very near.

Guten Abend. I wish spring were here in KCMO. We had 3-5 inches of snow Saturay. Pratt, Kansas, had
28 inches. The blizzard through the mid-west was pretty awful. Sun is out today and it is about 45 degrees. Our younger son, Mark, lives in Fargo,ND, and you know how bad it is there. Whole city is trying to contain the Red River and save their downtown areas. They need prayers. Auf wiedersehen. Bleib gesund.

Arnold Rom and I have decided that the time has come to put our book - MEMORIES OF CHILDHOOD - on the internet, to make it available as widely as possible to any interested Gottscheers. You can find it on the above web site. If you wish to have a printed copy, you can download each section onto your own computer desktop and print it from there. Please be patient if you find the web site a bit slow. If you have any problems reading any of the sections, please e-mail me at ridy@sympatico.ca.

We owe a special thank you to Helmuth Kump for making this Plauderzimmer available to us. Arnold and I met here during one of our regular Sunday evening chats all those many years ago, and our book grew out of that initial encounter. Back then we enjoyed many interesting and informative discussions about our Gottscheer heritage on this Plauderzimmer and formed cyberspace friendships which have lasted through the years.

We hope you will continue to enjoy MEMORIES OF CHILDHOOD in this new format.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of Gottscheers who live in Japan, or India. My web site, www.gottschee.ca, has had more hits from Japan than Austria, but I've never heard of any Gottscheers who settled there. I realize there are Gottscheers who settled in Brazil, and right now the most hits are coming from Brazil. But Japan puzzles me, and so does India. Summer is finally here in Pittsburgh, it was a very warm and humid weekend. Margaret, hope your husband recovers quickly and gets back to fishing.

Concerning the large number of hits from Asia, it could be that a surname or village in the text of Ridy and Arnold's book is matching a popular keyword in Asian countries. I would not read too much into it, though I would be curious as to what the magic word is...

It's interesting the countries that provide the most hits to THIS site, some are expected and some are not:

1. United States
2. Canada
3. Germany
4. Nigeria !!
5. Austria
6. Slovenia
7. United Kingdom
8. Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast)
9. Ghana
10. Australia

Guten Abend. Husband recovering. Looks better. Great grandson over the pneumonia. Weather in KC is like late September not August. Garden is turning out tomatoes faster than I can give them away. Everything much better here. Auf wiedersehen. Bleib gesund.

I hope everyone is having a wonderfull summer!
Sorry to hear about your husband and grandson Margaret. Yes, it is interesting about the different countries to come on this site.
I have a Niece living in Australia!
I visited my Brother Joe and he helped me make a map of our Village Reichenau, but I still need to make it a bit smaller and true to an original map.
He knows of some very unique ROCKS near our village
and I will mark them in on the map. They are carved in to the rock very smooth of a person lieing down, indented into the rock and also one of a person sitting on the rock with hands and legs over the edge smoothly indented into the rock! He use to heard the cattle and found them in the bushes.

Thanks for the update Margaret. Always good to hear from you. Did you watch the Hail Mary pass by Brett Favre of the Vikings today? That was an awesome moment.
Have a good week. We are in the 50's at the moment and it feels good.

guten Abend. Very cool in KC. Weatherman says about 10 degrees below average and very windy. It should be pleasant and sunny, but not this fall. Have a wonderful week. Bleib gesund.

Guten Abend. Very chilly here. Hard freeze each night this week. Will warm up next week and we will
have Indian summer. Pulled up the last tomato plants, so the garden is done for this year. Kind of sad to see summer go. Auf wiedersehen. Bleib gesund.

Oh Margaret, I was really pulling for the Chiefs to beat my least-favorite team, the Cowboys. It was not to be, but the Chiefs forced overtime.

Today I was asked the following question:

Do the Gottscheers think of themselves as Austrians?

Thank you for your replies.

Marilu:
In the census records of the people I researched, they listed themselves as Austrians in all the early records. Sometimes, in the later ones they listed themselves as German. once in awhile I ran across a few who listed then themselves a Slovenian in the later censuses.

Hi,Sophia in reply to your queery about Gottscheers, I do not tell people I am Austrian. I usually explain I am Gottscheer a group that has lived in now called Slovenija and we had our own language that was unwritten but German was our written language. Germanic speaking but not Austrian. Well enough said!

Hi, Marilu, Hope all is well with you!
I wonder what most peoples Baptism certificate says?
My Btm. Cert. is not an original so there are no stamps on it that are official.

Good Evening. I am looking for photos of the interior of the church of Maria Himmelfahrt in Tschermoschnitz taken PRIOR to the recent renovations. I am particularly interested in photos that show German holy writings on the various altars.
Will very much appreciate you sending me copies.
If questions please write me at wyants@frontiernet.net

Vielen, vielen Dank.

Guten Abend. My father, Leo Yonke, always said he was Austrian. I guess he thought Gottscher was like a regional group in the country of Austria.

Guten Abend. CHiefs have a by week. That's good. At least they can't lose. KCMO is sick of the publicity Larry Johnson is getting. I think he should be fired from the Chiefs, but what do I know.
