It is nine thirty here in Kamloops, Canada, Thursday. Hope all had a good Thanksgiving day. We are moooving to the other end of the city, on Sat. 29th. It will be a big change for us, we have lived in this house for 32 years so now to get used to a new home I will probable be walking into the wrong room to get things and the kitchen! wow wait til I navigate in the cupboards and can't find anything.
Well I shall get back to all when my computer is hooked up in the new place. God Bless.

Margaret Jonke:
Guten Abend. Hope all are well and finally done with leftover turkey. Chiefs squeaked by again today. Wondering how KC sports writers will blast them in tomorrow morning's paper???
- 171.75.239.121 - Monday, December 01, 2003 at 02:09:05 (UTC)
Margaret Jonke:
Hi, Fridl. Glad you could join us. My relatives lived near the Gottscheer Club house . My aunt and uncle, Hermann and Anna Lackner, once managed the club. Maybe you knew them?? I live in KCMO and there are lots of us Gottscheers here. My married name is Murphy, but I log on as Jonke, my maiden name. My father's family came from Kumerdorf.
- 171.75.239.121 - Monday, December 01, 2003 at 02:13:01 (UTC)
Ridy Hoegler Skyrme:
Hi Margaret!
Did you ever find out for me what Marie Wolf's maiden name was?

- 64.229.235.10 - Monday, December 01, 2003 at 02:17:51 (UTC)
Margaret Jonke:
Ridy: Marie's maiden name was Mausser. There were 4 or 5 sisters and 1 brother, Frank Mausser, who passed away about 4 months ago in Brooklyn or somewhere near there. He and his wife, Pepi, once were managers of the Gottscheer club
there. No one in the family is living now. Anna Mausser was my aunt by marriage. SHe married my Uncle William Jonke.

Gregg Lickteig-Tramposh:
Hi Margaret, good to see a fellow KC Gottscheer.

Margaret--were you born in Gottschee or the states?
- 68.86.80.195 - Monday, December 01, 2003 at 02:27:19 (UTC)
Ridy Hoegler Skyrme:
Thanks, Margaret! I appreciate that! My mother was a Mausser as well but I don't think they were related.

Greg: I was born in KCMO. My father and his family (Jonkes or Yonkes) came from Kumerdorf. My grandmother (olma) was a Jonke before AND after marriage. Quite a common name, I understand. Oma was born in Lichtenbach.

Gregg Lickteig-Tramposh:
Margaret I am organizing a small family reunion for next June here in KC and was thinking of having a Gottscheer guest come and talk about the life and traditions of Gottschee. None of my relatives that will be attending have any idea about Gottschee.
- 68.86.80.195 - Monday, December 01, 2003 at 02:33:09 (UTC)
Margaret Jonke:

Greg: Typo in my last remark. Oma (grandmother). My mother's parents came from Bavaria. That grandma we called grossmutter.

- 171.75.239.121 - Monday, December 01, 2003 at 02:34:02 (UTC)
Gregg Lickteig-Tramposh:
I've heard of Bavaria. Is it a country or is that by chance in Germany?
- 68.86.80.195 - Monday, December 01, 2003 at 02:35:58 (UTC)
Margaret Jonke:
Greg: Wish there was a KC Gottscheer relative that I could recommend as a resource person, but none are in town. My only contact would be a "near cousin" who came oveer at age 7 and doesn't remember Gottschee, as they were moved during the umseidlung(?) to Austria. No help there sorry.

greg: One last remark. My father, Leo Yonke, owned the Yonke Furniture Studio on Westport Rd. for 40 years. Repair and restoration of antiques. He learned his cabinet making trade in Kumerdorf. Have you heard of the Yonke Furniture Studio, by any chance??

- 171.75.239.121 - Monday, December 01, 2003 at 02:44:20 (UTC)
Gregg Lickteig-Tramposh:
I myself haven't but I'm sure my mother will know it. I also went to school with a family of Yonke's, at Shawnee Mission North High School. I believe their father was in police work of some kind.

I hope St. Nikolaus is very generous with his gifts to you tonight, and that the Krampus doesn't come anywhere near you if you've been bad this past year!

Paul B.:
Ridy, The Krampus is here!-Dumping snow like crazy. At this moment taking only our own particular situation into consideration(like my son getting home safely in his big truck) And my musician son who has not called since he left early today in this weather -all I can say just now is BAH HUMBUG!!!
- 68.194.42.188 - Friday, December 05, 2003 at 22:41:25 (UTC)
Paul B.:
Hey Folks,How about a state to state reportOn the snow situation? Ridy, how about Canada? Our village of bethpage in Nassau County on the island has a late report of 9 inches of the white stuff so far-that's to say nothing about the drifts what with the gale winds we are experiancing.......I am sure Trix has more than all of us in Wakenabou--Did I spell that right trix???
- 68.194.42.188 - Saturday, December 06, 2003 at 23:32:15 (UTC)
Ridy:
Sorry to disappoint you, Paul, but there's no snow in Toronto and none in the forecast. It's not exactly warm - just under the freezing point - but for once you really can't blame us for sending you the snow - it didn't make it north of the border in this region. Don't worry, we'll get our share before the winter is over. Don't forget - we think of Toronto as being in the banana belt region! Of course, that doesn't make much sense, because we don't grow bananas up here. We sure do eat a lot of them though!
- 64.229.238.46 - Sunday, December 07, 2003 at 00:10:27 (UTC)
Paul B.:
Funny you should mention bananas.I just threw 2 of them away today. We went to do our pre storm shopping and bought a ton of stuff, knowing that there would be no Bella Napoli with the storm. The produce guy says to Adie that the bananas ripened on their way to the store this time, and she bought them any way-Ugh! They were black as coal! Now just think of the possible disaster-had I been a pregnant women and had a gieger (spelling?) for bananas-God forbid, my baby may have been born with a banana nose! Just a bit of winter humor there..

Helmuth:
Hi Paul, Ridy, and all. Here in Western PA it started snowing late Friday and continued into Saturday. Total about 10 inches. We still have lots of snow on the ground but it didn't stop my son Tommy and me (and hundreds of other runners) from running a 5K race this morning (3.1 miles), this was his first race and he did great. Benefitted the Marines' Toys for Tots.

I prepared for the race by shoveling the driveway twice!

Margaret Jonke:
Guten Abend. I'm ashamed to say I'm from KC after the Chiefs got romped on by Denver. I can't wait to see how the local sports writers treat them tomorrow. One of the Chiefs made some critical remarks about the Broncos and their head coach, so maybe we deserved the shellacking.

Today I will absolutely agree with you, Franz! We are having our first real snowfall and we now have at least an inch already - which is an inch more snow than I like. Our temperatures, however, are rising above freezing again, so this one won't last. :-) Of course, I can't speak for other places in Ontario - like Kitchener, for example. . . . .

Jim Heimann:
Hello from NJ. We have had our second snowfall this winter and it is not even winter yet. I might as well be in Minnesota. The Chiefs, and the Cowboys did what they had to do yesterday but the Vikings are doing their best to blow it. They statistically dominated the Bears but found a way to lose.
On a different note, is anyone familiar with the town name of Malilog. I could not find it on the Gottschee map (which has both German and Slovene variations). Nothing important but just interested since I have seen it on the Ellis Island site with Gottscheer appearing names.

- 152.163.253.69 - Monday, December 15, 2003 at 14:16:44 (UTC)
Trix:
You are right about the Vikings, Dr. Jim. Will have the pleasure of attending the Vikings - KC game next Saturday. Am keeping my fingers crossed.

Regarding Malilog. No doubt it is spelled wrong, don't you think? Hope someone responds.

We have a gray, dreary and cloudy day but not much snow. Can't complain.

Everyone, enjoy a good Monday.

SR:
East Persia is more likely "East Prussia", in north-east Germany, near Poland. Therefore Grabowska, a Polish name.
Look in "Google". Type in Kamradt. You will find many Kamradt's listed.

Hallo Herbert,

Easy for you to say. I went to midnight mass. Didn't get out until 1:45 am after mass and greeting fellow parishiners. I didn't get to bed until 2:30 am and now that I'm up again, I have to be at 10:30 am mass.

Sometimes being a member of the church choir is almost like going to work.

Have been trying to post a message to Peter Jonke, asking him if he is looking for information on Gottscheers in general or on his own family in particular.
Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas. We've had no snow or rain in Toronto and the tempertures remain very mild. Not at all like Christmas, but winter has only just started, after all.

Du, in Gottschee geboren? Der Name Jonke kommt ja oft unter den Gottscheern vor.

Sophia Stalzer-Wyant:
As another year draw to a close it is appropriate to reflect and share some thoughts:

a. First, THANK YOU for all the wonderful sharing, caring, entertaining and laughter that you have brought to this marvelous Gottscheer Plauderzimmer. Mr. Kump - Danke.

b. We are all busy individuals but in spite of it all, we give to causes that are near and dear to us. For me, among numerous others, Project Gottschee has been and continues to be a most enjoyable journey. It has been a pleasure to get to know all of you, to laugh with you, to learn from you and to appreciate you.

c. I continue to be challenged, motivated and excited about the preservation and/or restoration work being done in our former homeland Gottschee. Some have said, "what is the point. There is nothing left." I would have to disagree with that statement. The point is - Gottschee will always be my homeland, the place of my birth, the foundation of who I am. Besides, all is not gone - in fact, in my humble opinion, uite a bit survived the war and that deserves and needs to be honored and preserved. Let us remember that the Gottscheers, throughout their 630 year history not only "worked, lived and loved the land" but left a proud legacy of accomplishment for all of us to enjoy. The former Gottschee will continue to be a beautiful part in the southeast corner of Slovenia.

Sophia Stalzer-Wyant:
d. THANK YOU to many of you who have generously supported the numerous fundraising efforts that daughter Maria and I have co-chaired. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. The most recent projects have included raising funds for:

- Rpairs to the church Maria Hilf in Rodine (dedicated this last September)with over 600 in attendance).

- The church, Maria Himmelfahrt in Tschermoschnitz, is getting a major overhaul. It will celebrate its 500 year anniversary in 2009. Mark the date on your calender. They are planning a huge celebration.

-The church in Mitterdorf by Tschermoschnitz is also getting a major new look.

Donations for the two pending projects will be most welcomed.

We have much to be grateful for and among the blessings is our Gottscheer heritage. Pass it on to your children and grandchildren. We have a proud legacy that must be shared with everyone.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I am trying to find any information possible on a Dorothy M Weber, born in 1912 or 1913(she was 17 years old on the 1930 census completed in April that year) Her parents were John and Annie M Weber, born approx. 1882 and 1885. I believe the census has John Weber listed as a furniture finisher. We believe that Dorothy M. Weber (who is most likely deceased now) is my friends biological mother and that a Father Marsh from St Matthias assisted in the adoption set-up. My friends mother is also recently deceased, but since she was seeking her biological family, her daughters want to continue the search. We thought that maybe some long-time Ridgewood residents might be able to offer some assistance. Thanks

CONGRATULATIONS to the Gottscheer group in Klagenfurt, Austria, for bringing us a new Gottscheer web site (http://www.gottschee.at) to keep us in touch with the Gottscheer community throughout the world and help us to learn more about our heritage. Some sections of it are still under construction and, unfortunately, for those of you who do not speak German, the English section is not yet online. However, there is a provision for an English section. Until the English version becomes available, I’m sure that any one of us who is fluent in both languages will be happy to assist you in reading it.
In the meantime, don’t forget to visit some of the other Gottscheer web sites, which have been generously made available to us by individuals and groups, in addition to this popular site, which is made available to us by Helmuth Kump.

Hello, Kirk. It has been a long time. I located other Samidas in the Washington County area of Pennsylvania. They are listed as from Yugoslavia and came over around 1899. It is a good bet that they are relatives of yours. Highly unlikely for a family of Samidas to go that area of Pennsylvania and not be related to your family. The last name, Samida, is usually seen in the Tschermoschnitz or Pollandl areas of Gottschee. A variant, Samide, is seen in other parishes.

Hi,Jim, I am finally on line again. Since we moved my computer (mouse) died. Soooo I bought a new one computer.
Printer and scanner. Also since moving we had alot of unpacking to do. We have moved to the east part of the city, much quieter and peacefull. Across the river (the south Thompson) we can see alot of cattle feeding in the feed lot. The place where they fatten them up and send them to slaughter house. Also, I have not done much with the Ramor family tree yet. I hope to send a bit of info to the Gottscheer Heritage paper soon.
Hi, Trix! Hope you both had a Blessed and peaceful Holidy Season.

Thank you Helmuth, I'll give it a try and see what happens, but it looks ok so far.
Hello again Jim. Yes its been a long time, but am now just getting back into doing some research. Raising kids and working can keep a guy busy. I've also located other Samida's from that area, but no definate link there yet. My ggrandfather died in Pennsylvania in 1893, so he must have been one of the earlier ones over. My contact from that area also had a ggrandfather(George Samida) who was a coal miner, so we presume they were related, we just don't know how yet. One of my relatives from Wisconsin sent up a picture of my ggrandfathers headstone. It was quite interesting because on the side of the headstone there was a second name of a son born in 1882 and dying in 1890. His name was also George Samida.
Take care
Kirk Samida

We'll take the snow up here in Central Alberta, Canada. We had rain of all things all day yesterday and now it dropped down to -10C. Just one big skating rink outside.

I think Trix had her tears on the last day of the season as the Vikings let the title slip away. Let's see --- Panthers versus Eagles and Patriots versus Indianopolis. New England and Indianopolis should be a great game if both teams play up to their capabilities.

OK - somebody please clue me in. I've figured out that the discussion is about some sort of ball game. Considering the season, it's not baseball. Golf isn't a team sport, generall speaking, and it's not cricket. Don't think it's hockey. That leaves basketball and football..... which is it?

Helmuth: I guess I'm not really grieving, but the Chiefs are terrific sometimes and lousy the next. You get the whole town psyched up and then we get let down. City council tells us the play-off today brought several million dollars in visitors. That's good.

It was cold enough in Toronto to freeze the balls off a brass monkey as well. Today it went above freezing, but by midweek we're supposed to be back down in the arctic temperature zones again. From one extreme to the other this winter, it seems. We've even had an inch or two of snow today - not enough to make a fuss about, but it's definitely turned white out there. My sisters are off to Cuba and I wish I could join them! Not that I like the hot weather, but it would be good for a change.

Hi,everyone. Nice to hear from all. We have also had a cold spell here in British Columbia (Kamloops). Now the temp. is hovering around 0 C.; we have about 4 to 6 in. of snow on the ground still. We sure need the moisture with all the fires we had this summer. I myself like hockey. We have quite a good team here in Kamloops "The Blazers." Some of the players have gone on to the big leagues..
We are almost settled into our new home only a few boxes to unpack now.
This new computer sure is nice to use. I'm still getting use to it.
We also are attending a new church and it is very community like. Very friendly bunch of people.

Jim ~ We're suffering up here as well. This morning it was still above freezing, and now we're down into the single digits, going down to single digits below zero overnight! Granted, it's January, but this cold is not what we like to be. We've even had enough snow for the snow plough to come around. . . . pretty it might be, but to my liking it is not. And then there are those who seem to go in search of the cold. . . check out this web site of a group of scientists trekking across the frozen North, collecting data on global warming. I know it's true, but it does sound like a huge fantasy just now.

Good Morning,
I am from Little Falls, NY and my fathers home town is Draga, Slovenia. I am looking for information on people by the name of Osbolt, Miklich or Schwasnick. Also I am looking for a book in ENGLISH by Erich Petschauer "Das Jahrhundertbush". I found that Herma Moschner made a translation of this book and I would like a copy. If anyone has any informaition I would appreciate it. Thanks, Bob

Sophia Stalzer-Wyant:
Good Morning Bob Miklich. Good to hear from you. Have never been to Draga but know where it is and also know Gottscheers who hail from that village in the western most part of the former Gottschee.

Regarding the book in ENGLISH I would recommend that you write to: Robert Kraker, Gottscheer Relief Assn. 657 Fairview Avenue, Ridgewood, NY 11385. The publication was originally distributed through the NY Gottscheer organization and I am thinking that Mr. Kraker would know3 whether or not the book is still available. If NOT, send me an e-mail at wyants@mlecmn.net.

Good to meet you and hope to hear from you again. Tell us a little about your memories of Gottschee as learned from your father. I, for one, would love to hear it. I also have a beautiful photo of the church in Draga that I would be glad to share with you. I know that I have heard the name Mklich before so chances are there are others by that name, and that area, around. Good luck in yourjourney.

Hello Marilu Peschel Thurman

Nice to hear from you, I only wish that my mother would be here now, but she is deceased, she would know the Meditz's from Oberdeutschau. I myself do not, I will ask Mrs. Meditz from Cleveland, who married a Karl Meditz, who lived in Brooklyn, I will find out where he was from. My mother knew Karl from home. As soon as I find out I will leave you a message.

Wow, it is bitter cold here in Cleveland today. I guess winter has officially announced himself or herself, which ever it may be. It snowed most of the day, but now as the weather man said, the clipper left the area. What can one expect when it is winter, right? Will be talking to all of you soon. Keep warm.

Hilde

Hello Ted Meditz. Sorry I missed your call the other day, but I work during the day and when I got home after stopping at the store, it was too late to call you back. I will try this weekend. Even though we are not relatives, it will be nice talking to you. I am desparately trying to find my cousins from my mother's brother's side, but have had no luck. Mr. Jim Heimann thought he had their number, but apparently they moved and are no longer at the e-mail address he had. I will be talking to you soon.

Thanks again and stay healthy.

Hi, to whoever is on line tonight. I see a KONIG is mentioned. A few years ago I heard of a Konig Doctor of N.Y. Also, he was from my village of Reichenau, I don't remember which house # the Konig family lived in.
I hope this is of some help.
Our weather here in KAMLOOPS, B.C. is very nice, only a very light icing dust of snow this morn. Trix I hope everything is well with you and all your family.

Noch abach reden. Regina

O.K. Regina-I will do a little talking. I haven't heard those words noch abach reden in a while. You brought back some sweet memories.. Don't mind thespelling, but my remark of Ich kon ete reden (sp?) used to always bring a good laugh when I came up with that answer....Ah yes, those were the good old Gottscheer days for me..Weather here on Long Island in New York is now 10 with a scary chill factor.Pleasant dreams -Have a warm and good Sunday...

Hello everyone

It is Sunday again and I hope we have a few people on the line today. The weather is just too cold to go out. If we have the snow pass us by tomorrow, that will be great. The weather channel promised us a lot of snow, rain, ice, etc.
I see that KCMO has what they promised us. Stay warm and hope that things will get better fast.

Taking a break from the Golden Gloves Awards. With Dick Clark being the producer it is always a top show.

It continues to snow at Waukenabo and they tell us it will go on all night and all day tomorrow. In spite of that, it is beautiful and peaceful. Now if the winds behave it will be ok but if they, as promised, do come it will be very, very interesting. We live on a point surrounded by water and without a doubt, will be drifted shut. But, we have good neighbors who will do their plowing once its over. So, everyone, stay warm and enjoy the quiet of the winter.

Cook Islands Richard, I send you greetings and hope all is well.

A late good evening to everybody!
Sorry I'm so late again... meant to get on earlier. From the sounds of it, everyone is 'under the weather'. We had a beautiful day here in Toronto, as long as you don't factor the temperature into it. Now we're under a winter storm warning, and we may well also be snowed in by morning. However, since I haven't set foot outside the door since Christmas, another few days of being housebound won't matter much, one way or the other.
I've made another 'high tech mistake'..... the other day (and I'm not sure anymore what day it was) I opened my Inbox to find it loaded to the hilt with spam - and I lost my cool. I always delete the junk without opening it, but this time I did something different - don't have a clue what it was - and I deleted about a week's worth of messages, a good number of which I had not read yet. Only recognized three or four as they were flashing by, faster than the speed of light. If you sent me a message, and did not receive a response, I apologize. Would you please send it again. Hilde - one of them might have been from you - am not sure - my sister Hilde re-sent me some she had sent. I have been told to start zapping them from the bottom up in future, not from the top down. mea culpa.

Sophia Stalzer-Wyant:
Greetings to all visitors to the Plauderzimmer. It is cold, really cold in Minnesota. Try -20°F as of noon. This will continue for the next 6 or 7 days. Looking at the news from Europe though, they have their troubles too.

On a happier note, I am looking for a map of the former Austrian - Hungarian Empire which includes the area of the former Gottschee (now part of Slovenia) and the former area of Untersteiermark to which the Gottscheers resettled in 1941.

The names of the villages, I think are written in both the original German and current Slovenian. I saw this map on the internet but unfortunately for me cannot remember where and did not save the proper page.

If anyone can help in locating this map please post the ULR page for all the see. It truly is a GREAT map and would be enjoyed by many.

Anyone planning to go to Slovenia this year? Would appreciate knowing that too. There are a number of excellent publications, on the former Gottschee, that are not as yet available in North America. Would be nice if someone could buy a few and bring them back.

Its cold but sunny and time to start dreaming about this summer and places to visit.

Thanks everyone. Appreciate you.

Hi, to all. This may be of interest to Frank and Hilde. I spoke with my sister Olga last night and she said that she was at a funeral of a Kobetitch in Vancouver. Our cousin Ron Schuss and other cousins where also there. Sorry, I don't know her first name.

Ridy, I have been trying to send you some email but alas it doesn't go through. Maybe you could let me know your present email?

Hi, Trix.. I can understand that the snow is getting you, it sure got us on Wed.28th about a foot of snow fell here in Kamloops, B.C. We are all shoveled out now and expect to have a very sunny Sunday. It should lift my spirits since I just got a very baaad headcold, I think I need nose plugs for my runny nose. The rest of the family have gone to a prayer group, hope the prayers do alot of good.

Griesgott, Edith, of Austria. I have a cousin that lives in Graz. It's been a long time since we visited there.
Our temperature here in Kamloops is around 0 C. so it is not to cold either.

has lived there since the '20s or '30s They have a street named after them because they have llived in same house for fify years. They are sort of pioneers of Richmond.
I don't know where in Gottschee he came from.

Sophia Stalzer-Wyant:
Hi D. Ryan. Nice to meet you. Thank you for your message. I am familiar with the Höfferle name and would enjoy learning more about your family. For example, where in Gottschee did they live? When did they come to America? Names of your parents, grandparents etc. We have a number of individuals working on the Gottscheer genealogy and know that they would enjoy assisting you.

There are many publications about Gottschee and the Gottschers including life style etc. Also, the Gottscheer dialect is still spoken by the older generation as well as the members of the last generation born in Gottschee. There are numerous efforts underway to preserve this old language.

I would suggest that you visit the many Gottscheer web sites and contact the Gottscheer Heritage and Genealogy Assn. which is a non-profit assn. established to preserve the history, culture and family records of Gottschee.

You are welcome to write to me at my home. It is wyants@mlecmn.net. Hope to hear form you.

I was born in the Moschnitze area of Gottschee.

Sophia: not much is happening here i went for my regular bike ride through our local park it is an area that is totaly old forest it is quite a large area has a couple of small lakes inside . some time it is used by the search and rescue to practise in the summer it is realy cool inside because of the tall trees .In fact it gets quite dark inside and the sun hardly get through .

Dear Franz,
Please call me Jim. The bike roads through the forest sound great. Is it very hilly or are the ups and downs gradual? I would think you would have to have a mountain bike for the terrain.

Paul--- a good week to you and your family.

Hello Jim H:

Jim, I just wanted to thank you again for all the information you e-mailed me. My daughter, Teresa is going for her masters at Kent State, and one of her classes is on culture. This came in so handy for her. Her father's and my family tree helped tremendously. It was fun to go through this with her, even the grandchildren took a part in it. So again, donk schean. Have a good week.

Franz of vancouver:
Dear Jim : Well it is somewhat hilly but the inclines are not too long so my legs get a rest. My son bought me a good used mountain bike. I used to do a lot of biking on city streets but my son said fat tires are a help as it is quite soft in places. It is very different from biking on roads, much harder on the legs, especialy at my age, but I am enjoying it. Much nicer to ride through a forest than on city streets with all that car exhaust.
My son and his wife go on 4 or 5 hour trips but I am not up to that anymore, about an hour is more to my liking.

Just to let you know I am a third generation american. My Great Grandfather was Johannes Hoefferle and he came from Pöllandl. If you have any information on the town or any other neat information please let me know? I am very interested in my heritage. Oh and by the way, How can I start to learn the Gottscheer dialect? Thanks to you all!

Ridy: A very happy birthday to you. It seems everyone I know has a February birthday. Aquarians are great people so are Pices (thats me ha ha)

Jim: I think the nicest part is the coolness during the hot days of summer. It is so nice to ride in there and sit by the lake when it is 80 or 90 cel and listen and watch the birds.

Werner: We usually have glorious weather in May. You should not need winter coats or boots. A warm jacket in case it is a little cool. Some years we have had 80 degrees in late May. Will keep you up to date as it gets nearer to May but I am sure it will be ok and if this is your first visit you will be very impressed. I still am after all these years.

Knowing that you live near Graz, Austria I am hoping that you are actively involved with the Gottscheer organization there. They continue to do an outstanding job on preserving the Gottscheer heritage and am sure that they, just like all other organizations, not only hope but welcome the involvement of younger Gottscheers. This is probably one of the best ways to learn about our ancestors, culture and history. I know you will enjoy it.

Hi, everyone. Hope everyone had a good week and a special Valentine! Franz I wonder if you know some of my relatives in Vancouver? Any of the Schuss of Lackner or Ramor? I myself live in Kamloops. We use to live in Richmond. It is a bit colder here but the snow is very dry and we can use a broom to sweep the light snow we usually get, this year we had a big dump all in one day and we did quit a bit of shoveling. We are still setting into our home since we moved at end of Nov.03.
We try to get down to Vancouver at least twice a year to visit my sister and brother, and some cousins if time permits.

bye for now. regina

I did talk to your uncle , John Lackner, to find out just where he was from and did he still speak Gottscheerish. He said he was born here and did speak Gottscheerish when he was young but no longer remembers how. He told me he had a niece, Regina, in Kamloops. I do not know the Schloss family, just know of them mostly through the Gottscheer Newsletter. I did not attend Mrs. Kobetitsch's funeral but my younger sister Martha did . Have you talked to your Uncle John lately? Does your brother and sister who live here see John and Kay at all? I did hear from a mutual friend that John may have a medical problem. The details were not known at the time but she said she would let us know when she hears more. We pray it is not too serious.

Bye for now

Good evening Hilde. How is everything in Cleveland? We have lots of snow but warmer days which is most welcome. It has been a pretty nasty winter but know that spring is around the corner.

I learned that your Chor is going to Europe this summer. Wonderful. Hope everyone will have a GREAT time. Are you planning to go to Gottschee too?

Please greet all the Gottscheers and best wishes to you. Please remind Eddie S. not to forget the cassette of his beautiful button box music.

Any chance you might join us in Minneapolis in June? Would be nice to see you and others from Cleveland.

Hi Sophia and everyone else in the Plauderzimmer!

Unfortunately, the Cleveland Gottscheer Heimatchor had to change its travel plans, and will not be going to Europe this summer. I'm afraid events conspired against us. We're all very disappointed!

However, we are looking forward to the Treffen in Milwaukee Labor Day weekend, and hope to see as many of you as possible there! (Ridy, have you been setting aside your $10/week? Hope so!!)

Temperatures are supposed to creep into the 50s this weekend in Cleveland. Can crocuses, snowbells and daffodils be far behind?

Trix, hope you had a wonderful birthday celebration!

Happy Fasching Dienstag, everybody!
Fasching - the time before Lent - was celebrated with much gusto in Gottschee. There was dancing and merrymaking and dressing up in costumes, following the old traditions, and especially the young people had a ball. Food also played a big part of the celebrations, and Krapfen were the star attraction! To equate Krapfen with doughnuts is to miss by a country mile, but it's the closest I can come.
So enjoy today - Lent starts tomorrow.

Herbert - thanks for reminding me! My piggybank looks awfully lean right now and I'll have to double up the weekly 'contributions' until I catch up!

Ridy, thanks for sharing these wonderful memories about life in Gottschee with all of us. I love hearing them. Now, if I could just get my act together and try making some Krapfen, life really would be great. Anyone want to send me some? WOULD LOVE THEM.

Have a good Lent. Again, Danke Ridy.

Thanks for your note Herbert. I am sorry too that your trip was cancelled. Shall we try for 2005? The GHGA will host another journey to Gottschee the last week in Mai and first in April. Would be very, very nice to meet up with you, and your excellent choir, at one of the Sunday masses. Think about it.

Ridy Hoegler Skyrme:
ASH WEDNESDAY was the start of Lent in Gottschee, of course, but before everyone could get down to the serious business of fasting and doing penance, there was still the matter of having a proper send-off for the Fasching. All the young people were involved in this. They would make a figure out of straw, which now represented the Fasching, and they would form a very sad procession, with a lot of weeping, wailing, and moaning, carrying the Fasching to its grave. They also dug the grave, and cried copious tears as the Fasching was buried with great pomp and ceremony, to rest in peace for another year. In some areas of Gottschee, the Fasching met an untimely death in a bonfire.

Ridy, THANK YOU for this report on LIFE IN GOTTSCHEE. Just love it. Don't have any personal memories at all about it but do remember about the same costum in Austria. I LOVED the Krapfen. Darn it, just have to learn how to make them.

Hilde Kobetitsch:
Hello everyone

I just opened the Plauderzimmer log and found all the good stuff about Fasching. Ridy, you are really doing a fine job in educating some of us with all the things that went on at home. We, here in Cleveland burn our Fasching at our Fasching dance. We have a procession with all the masked people and children and then a eulogy is held about the Mr. Fasching's untimely death. We have Bernie Wiederwohl, who officiates at this ceremony. Then the Fasching is taken outside of the hall and burned. I tell you, I have never heard of the burning of a Fasching until we had it at our Club. Then, I read up on this on the internet and found several items about where this custom comes from. Very interesting.

I, along with a friend of the Donauschwaben in Cleveland host a German Radio program and we talk about different things we had at home and are still customs here in the States. I bring news from Gottschee over the Radio and my partner brings the news of the Donauschwaben. This makes it quite interesting to our listeners, who are not always of German or Gottscheer heritage. We have a lot of American listners and they truly enjoy this.

Enough said, thank you again for all the wonderful news

have a good evening.

We are fine, now that we have gotten over the stomach flu or Norwalk virus, awful thing to go through.
The weather here is warming up niecely about +5C. Some of the daffodils are poking their green leafs about two inches out of the ground. I hope spring is on it's way.

Happy, Belated Birthday to TRIX!

I also remember about Fasching and the Kapfen, very good to here.
I wonder if there is anything in the Gottscheer tradition about Shrove Tuesday? Here at our church we had a pancake supper. I don't remember ever doing anything special on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Anyone with any ideas on this?

Well it is midnight and my pillow is calling me

Marie Kobetitch of Victoria:
While searching out the family name on the internet, I came upon your log and was reading references to my family name. I found Franz of Vancouver, and Hilde Kobetitsch log entries and references to a funeral in Vancouver. I was born in Vancouver my grandparents were Simon and Louise Kobetitch (Simon dropped the "s" from the name to simiplify it apparently). I grew up knowing that I was related to all of the Kobetitich's at that time in Canada. My granfather Simon had a brother or two brothers who resided in the US. Possibly Kentucky, I am not certain to be honest although I did have the good fortune to meet one of my great uncles in the 60's. My grandmother passed away and her funeral was in Vancouver although this was now quite some time ago in 1995. I am not aware of a more recent funeral of the Kobetitch/Kobetitsch in Vancouver, although this does not mean one of my relations did not pass. I found the log entries interesting and certainly hope you do not mind my posting some feedback.

Sophia Stalzer- Wyant:
Gottscheer greetings from Minnesota to you Marie. Good to meet you. The Mrs. Kobetitsch that has been mentioned in this colum recently was a Lini Kobetitsch born in Warmberg, Gottschee. She is the mother of at least 2 daughters - Ida and Erna that I know personally. There may be more children but I do not know them.

I would love to hear from you. Please write me at: wyants@mlecmn.net.

I was born in the Tschermoschnitz area of Gottschee and have many relatives who live in Vancouver.

Auf Wiederhöhren.

Greetings from Idaho. I have been transcribing parish records and still have many questions about what happen to the Kren's in Koflern. Can anyone tell me if there is cemetery, obituaries and someone that is willing to look?

Dear Marie Kobetitch,
Nice to hear from you. Sophie is related to you --- she is your 4th and 5th cousin. Not sure exactly where the links come in. There could be other tie ins. So many of us are related at some point. Guess it comes from being from such a small area.

- 64.12.116.207 - Monday, March 08, 2004 at 03:17:05 (UTC)
Jim Heimann:
Rhonda,
I think the cemetary for Koflern would have been in Mitterdorf. According to the book of existing Gottscheer cemetaries in Slovenia, Mitterdorf has five cemetary plots with Gottscheer names but none named Kren. I don't know if there were other areas where Koflern villagers might have been buried and I am sure many of the graves were destroyed during and after WW II. Perhaps someone else will have more information.

- 64.12.116.202 - Monday, March 08, 2004 at 03:24:07 (UTC)
Sophia Stalzer-Wyant:
Hi Rhonda: Dr. Jim is correct. The village of Kofler belonged ot the Parish of Mitterdorf by Gottschee. There is another village of Mitterdorf but it is located in the eastern part of the former Gottschee that's why we write Mitterdorf by Gottschee (meaning the city). I have no doubt that Dr. Jim is also correct when he refers to the cemetery book which shows 5 standing Gottscheer gravestones for Kren.

Thanks for your reply. I'm looking for Josef Kren (died 1931) and Maria Tschinkel Kren, died 1928. From the birth records I'm transcribing I know of seven of their children died prior to them. Is there someone that can take pictures?

Rhonda: I am sorry but I erred regarding the gravestons in the cemetery of Mitterdorf (where the people from Koflern) would have been buried. There are 4 gravestones standing but none for Kren. I misread Dr. Jim's message.

I am wondering if Ludwig Kren, a well known and respected Gottscheer who lives in Austria might be of help to you. He comes from the village of Mitterdorf. If you are interested in writing to him let me know and I shall gladly mail you his address. I believe he reads English well.

Thank you so much for your response. You are very knowledgable on these genealogical matters. I unfortunately am not. I do know that my Aunt has spent much time researching the family tree and for all I know she obtained her information through these same contacts. To elaborate on the record, my Grandparents were Simon and Louise Kobetitch (at this time I do not have record of her maiden name). They had 5 children, Ernest, Walter, Bertha, Herbert (my father) and Helen. Helen's married name is Johnson. I certainly wish I could offer more names as there was a very close knit group of family members in Vancouver. Ernest Nick I recall. Unfortunately my Aunt Olga and Unlce Joseph I cannot supply a surname for. It is very interesting to discover more about my lineage. As children we were not taught the language and had very little knowledge passed of the old country. Other than my grandfather making some of the best wine I have ever tasted, and my grandmother making sausage that one would die for....(I was not blessed with either of these talents) it is very enriching and my children who are adults and married are very interested in learning more. My email is mbauder@shaw.ca and would appreciate any more information anyone cares to share!

Her father's name is Johann Moschner, born in Aschelitz on January 9, 1904. All she has is the names of his parents which are Andreas Moschner and Maria Schober. Would you be able to help her out at all? She doesn't have a computer so if you could send any info to me at gtilley@telus.net I'm sure she would be very grateful. Looking for stories and/or photos on the village of Tschermoschnitz, Gottschee. The church of Maria Himmelfahrt will celebrate its 500 year anniversary in 2009. In addition to doing major repairs to the church, possible with your many, generous donations, a book will be printed telling the history along with photos of the church and village and surrounding area. We are interested in personal stories as told by the Gottscheer from that area along with any and all photos, particularly those prior to 1941. Send your materials to: Sophia Stalzer-Wyant

Please identify the photo along with date, if possible, and include your name and address on the back. PLEASE DO NOT write this information on the photo but rather on a piece of paper which you can attach to the photos. Also, please let me know if you wish the photos returned.

Your help in this important project will be greatly appreciated. With your help if will be another important project on the preservation of the culture and history of Gottschee and the Gottscheers.

Gottscheer Freund:
Sharon, one explanation of the upside down “e” is when writing a word in the phonetic alphabet for the purpose of getting across to the reader the accepted pronunciation of a word. The upside down “e” is sometimes used in connection with other letters to make the complete pronunciation of a word. For instance, the word “fir” is phonetically written: “fəɹ” with the “i” and “r” upside down. The word “earth” is phonetically spelled: “əɹþ”. The second “e” in “ever” is written upside down. This may or may not be the answer to your question. Note, the two "squares" above did not get transcribed on my computer fonts. Each should have come through an upside down "r".

Just wanted to say hello to everyone. Have not been on for quite a while and I hope everyone is doing well. The weather is just horribe tonight. I went to the radio station to do my program and it took me almost 2 hours to get home. Normally it is 45 minutes. The streets were like a mirror, all ice and I almost got into several accidents. I just don't know what to do when I start sliding, by the time I got home I figured it out.

It sometimes takes me awhile to figure things out.

Hope to talk to you all again.

Hi any hocky fans out there from Columbus, why is the club called blue jackets.
- 24.69.255.237 - Monday, March 22, 2004 at 04:01:56 (UTC)
Helmuth:
Hi Franz,

The answer as I understand it, is based on the Civil War. Ohio provided more "blue jackets" (Union soldiers) than any other state. From what I understand the city (and Nationwide Insurance, who underwrote the team and construction of the arena) took a lot of heat for the name but it stuck. There's also the bug connotation "yellow jacket", one of their logo's is a blue stinging bug. Go figure. One fan said, "at least it's not the 'mighty ducks'".

Dear Helmuth;

Thanks for the interesting information about the team name. I always thought it was just another insect based name like Wasps, Hornets and so on.

Yes I too thought it was some sort of a bug. I said to my wife it is probably somthing like a yellow jacket or a wasp that is common to that area.
Thanks for the interesting info.

Helmuth:
Funny you should mention that. Pittsburgh used to have a minor league hockey franchise called the Hornets, this was pre-'67, after which the city got the Penguins in the big NHL expansion.

Franz, are you a Canucks fan? I'm hoping the Predators can make it to the playoffs this year for the first time (we have a summer place in Tennessee).

Hi Helmuth:
Yes I am a loyal Canuck fan but they haven't given us much to cheer about this last 6 games or so. Maybe they will make the playoffs yet we will just have to wait and see. The Predators have about the same chance as the Canucks to make it this year. We are about 6th and they are in 8th (I think)

Helmuth, speaking of the 1967 expansion, I was a fan of the California Seals (the last NHL team to fold btw). I currently like the Sharks.

Franz, I know, how unfortunate about the Bertuzzi incident. You still have a very talented team. I am still fuming that the Penguins gave up on Naslund.

Nose, I think you're right about the last team to fold, all the others were franchise relocations.

I am collecting photographs of Gottscheer Handarbeiten – embroidered wall hangings, tablecloths, garments, shawls, belts, etc. – the sort of items which Gottscheer women would have worked on in their spare time back home in pre-1941 Gottschee. Progress has been slow, but encouraging.

I will make the collection available on CD later this year, and most likely also on the internet, for anyone who is interested.

When photographing these items, please try to use a dark background, and good lighting, to make reproduction of the photographs possible. Either a digital or 35mm camera works fine.

Hi Rhonda,
It is possible that part of Mooswald could have at one time been in Mitterdorf Parish. I found a map of the parishes and it shows Mooswald as being on the border of Mitterdorf and Gottschee Parishes. Here is the link if you are interested.

Clint continues to do well. Enjoys the center, all the activities, the friendships and good food. For that matter, I love eating there too. Life, in spite of it all, is good and we are very grateful that this huge move has been such a positive experience.

Hello and I hope you are well. I see in your message that you are referring to a grandparent of the Schauer name? Where would that Schauer be from? I have a friend in Cleveland, Joe Schauer, whose father is from Moesel in Gottschee. Joe is looking for information about his grandparents, but has had no luck at all. Joe's parents are both deceased. That is the problem when we start looking for our ancestors and our parents are no longer here, it is quite difficult to find anything. I was just wondering about the Schauer from your family. thanks

To Rhonda Kren: I am no expert on Gottschee Parishes but my records do show a couple of other Gottschee villages as being in both Gottschee Parish and Mitterdorf Parish. My guess is that a few villages were originally in Mitterdorf Parish but later became part of the larger Gottscheee Parish. I have the villages Kerndorf and Malgern marked this way, as I have seen entries for these villages with both parishes attached to them. Perhaps Mooswald village is the same way. Good luck.

Ridy Hoegler Skyrme:
Easter week customs in Gottschee:
"During the mass on Gründonnerstag, Thursday during Easter week, the bells, as well as the church organ, were silenced. We said that the bells had flown to Rome. For the rest of the mass, and until the Resurrection on Holy Saturday, wooden clappers were used in church by the mass servers, in place of the little bells they would normally ring, and the choir sang without accompaniment. With the church bells silenced, ratchets were used in the bell tower, and they were operated at the times when the bells would normally ring.

Arnold particularly looked forward to Gründonnerstag, Holy Thursday. All the boys in town had to gather up wooden crates and boxes. In addition, the local carpenters built large wooden hammers for the boys. Around three o'clock in the afternoon of Gründonnerstag, and again on Karfreitag, Good Friday, they all gathered in the square in front of the church with their boxes and wooden hammers. When the signal was given they had to smash those boxes with the hammers. This was usually loud enough to be heard throughout the city. It symbolized the nailing of Christ on the Cross, and the noise was also supposed to be loud enough to drive all the evil spirits out of the church and the town. The wood was used to build the fire early on Karsamstag, Holy Saturday, which was then blessed and distributed to every home."

Hello everyone and I would like to wish all of the Gottscheers and their families Frohe Ostern.

I too have wonderful memories of the way Easter was celebrated by the Gottscheer families. My memories of course only go back to Graz. My parents still kept all of the old traditions and celebrations. Easter was one of my favorite Holy days. I was also in the church choir in Graz and this made it more beautiful when the children entoned the first song on Easter Sunday.

I still try to continue with the blessing of the food for my grandchildren, that is about all they do besides going to Mass. Good memories and thank you all for sharing them with us.

Have a wonderful and blessed Easter.

Good Friday:
“In Gottschee, as everywhere else, there was no mass on Good Friday, only the Stations of the Cross in the evening. In the City of Gottschee Schutzwächter (guards) were posted at the grave of Christ around the clock, and they changed guards at regular intervals. In the villages the “guards” were usually cut out of heavy cardboard, painted, and set in front of the grave.”

Ridy Hoegler Skyrme:
"Easter Saturday in Gottschee started early with the blessing of the fire in the church yard, and the mass servers brought a piece of the burning wood or glowing coal to each house, for which they received some coins as a tip. Each housewife lit a fire in her oven with this piece of blessed fire, and the family had to make sure that the fire did not go out during the Easter feast days.

When the Gloria was sung at mass that morning, the bells started to peal again, and the organ again accompanied the singers. Before the Easter procession started late in the afternoon, the bells pealed for an entire hour. Among the items carried in the procession on individual small pillows were nails, representing the nails with which Christ had been nailed to the cross, a hammer, and dice, which had been used by the soldiers to decide who would get to keep Christ’s robe. The processions each wound their way through the City and through the village and back to the church again, proclaiming to one and all that Christ had risen. It doubled as our Easter Parade – a chance to show off our finery.

At some point in the afternoon the blessing of the food took place in church. There was an old superstition that the first single young woman to exit the church would be a bride that year. Naturally, all the young women with hopes in that direction made a mad dash out of the church as soon as the blessing was finished. They could always fall back on the worn old excuse that they had to get home to help mother with the cooking."

Ridy Hoegler Skyrme:
“On Easter Sunday in Gottschee the choir started to sing in front of the church long before dawn and the young men of the parish shot off mortar shells on the nearby hills. After they depleted their musical repertoire they entered the church, and as an extra act of humility and penance, prayed the rosary while walking around the altar on their knees. At 7:00 a.m. they returned home for the Easter Breakfast. Later in the morning all the parishioners attended the celebration of the festive high mass. That was followed by the traditional Easter dinner at noon, which in my Grandmother Mausser’s home always meant Backhendel but in Arnold’s home was lamb. Lamb was also served in my father’s home. In the early afternoon there was another Devotion in Church, which included a sung litany. The rest of the day was given to socializing.
Easter Monday started the day with a high mass, but the rest of the day was reserved for socializing and partying, including singing, dancing, and bowling. Easter Monday was also the day the Pürgarә (the Burghers) or Stodlarә (the city folks) liked to visit their favorite Gasthäuser in the villages and sample the delicious foods they found there. The young people played a game (Eierpecken) whereby they tried to hit the hard-boiled eggs with coins, and if the coin stuck in the egg, they got to keep the money, and eat the egg. These old traditions and customs differed slightly from region to region, and even from village to village, but generally speaking, Gottscheers followed similar customs throughout the land.”
HAPPY EASTER, EVERYBODY!

Happy Easter to all. Just wanted to see if anyone is on tonight. We had a beautiful day here in Cleveland, both yesterday and today. My family was over and we had blessed food and other goodies which are fit for a king, especially at Easter time.

Ridy, thank you for all of the information you had for all of us in regards to the customs of home. Those were the good old days, I like to live in the past and I would so have enjoyed the customs of old. I always say that I was born in the wrong century. Thanks again and have a wonderful Easter Monday.

Remember, Easter Monday was a day for celebrating, that is when the band started to play and everyone went back to their dancing. I still remember as a teenager, I never danced during the fast time.

Thanks all of you for the memories.

Sophia Stalzer-Wyant:
Greetings from Minnesota. We, too, are experiencing chilly weather which even included snow this morning. I also learned that our former homeland too is having a very chilly spring.

Hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Easter.

Regina Ramor Gardner:
Happy Easter to all on the plaudezimmer.
Irene I'm very happy to hear your tests are good.
Franz I sure hope the Canucks win this year.
Ridy great to read all the info about our Gottscheer
customs.
Sophie hope you get warmer weather soon, we had a wonderfully warm easter weekend.
Paul, yes I think we all need to pray for the peace keepers
and service personel out in the world.
Hi, Hilde I also lived in Graz after the war. When did you
imigrate. We came to Vancouver, Richmond Canada in 1948.
In Graz we lived in a Reiter Kassern. I do remember having alot of fun as a child there.
Jim I too remember my mother telling me about the baskets of baked goodies being taken to church to be blessed.
Well I hope there is still someone around.
I'll be around for a little while. Regina

Franz of Vancouver:
Hi Regina
yes it would be nice if the Canucks could win they have been practising long enough. You say you came to B,C. in 1948 it would not by chance be in August of that year would it,that was when we arrived.

Hi,Franz sorry I didn't get to stay on.
I'm not sure of the month. My Uncle Henry Schuss came just
before us, I think in the same year.

Franz, the Predators have tied the series. We were in Tennessee over Easter weekend and the excitement of the local hockey fans is unmistakeable as this is the first post-season for the Preds.

Franz of Vancouver:
Regina, you must be about the same age as my sister who was born in 1945 in Graz. She remembers nothing of our arrival and the early times in Vancouver either. My Großmutter used to work at Mylora farms (not sure of spelling) in Richmond and she used to mention a Frau Schuss at times. Could be that this would have been a relative of your Uncle Fred. I myself did not know any of the Schuss family.
Helmuth: Our Canucks are also tied in the series. Should be interesting for both of us.

Ridy:
Helmuth and Franz -
So what will it profit the Canucks and Predators if they slay their competition, only to be slain in turn when they come up against the Mighty Maple Leafs of Toronto, eh?

- 64.229.178.226 - Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at 15:40:00 (UTC)
Franz of Vancouver:
Good one Ridy! We wait and see.
- 24.69.255.236 - Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at 16:14:01 (UTC)
Helmuth:
Ridy, indeed we will wait and see. Since the Penguins are out, and the Predators are not expected to do much in the playoffs, these victories over the Red Wings are gravy. I think more is expected of Franz's Canucks so the pressure may be on. If the Canucks ever face the Predators in a future round we may have a Plauderzimmer holy war.
- 67.163.154.131 - Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at 21:16:31 (UTC)
Ridy:
It's a Devils of a game, isn't it. . . .but count me out of the PZ war, holy or otherwise. I'm a confirmed pacifist.

Franz of Vancouver:
Helmuth & Ridy: I don't know about the Canucks, those Flames really caught fire last night and burnt us but good. However only time will tell and maybe we can pull out of the flaming fire so to speak. next 2 games are here in Vancouver so hope home ice advantage has some truth to it.
- 24.69.255.236 - Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at 23:30:57 (UTC)
Helmuth:
Franz, I was disappointed to see Johan Hedberg give up 4 goals yesterday. As you know he was the Pens' #1 goalie for a couple years and he was always a favorite here. Hope Cloutier comes back for you quickly.

Hilde Kobetitsch:
Hi Regina
I came to America in 1952. In Graz we lived in the Rosenhain Baracken, just a few minutes from the Hauptplatz and the Schlossberg. I went to Graz am Graben in the lower grades and then went on to the Elizabeth Schule. From the Elizabeth Schule we went back to a school which was around the Lentplatz, the name of the school momentarily left my thoughts. I will find out.

As children on the way home from school we entered the Schlossberg on the side where it had been bombed, and we could not go too far into the Schlossberg. We crossed the Mur before getting to the area. Our church was Johannes der Taeufer or die Graben Kirche. Our Katichet was Andreas Schmidt and he led the Children's choir in Church. We did have a lot of fun, those of course were the carefree years of our existence. We did not have much, but we were very happy.

Have a good weekend.

Hi Regina and Hilde. Greetings from Minnesota. Hilde, what month in 1952 did you come to America? We left Bremerhafen on April 16 and arrived in NY on April 26. From there we took the train to Minnesota. We crossed the Atlantic on the USNS Gen. Muir. Any chance we came at the same time?

Regina, hope all is well in Kamloops.

Regina Gardner:
Hi, Hilde I remember Rosenheim (the name) my aunt & uncle
Kump and their 3 children lived there Maria, she still lives in Graz Pauline lives now in Brooklyn and Alois also
lives in Brooklyn. I don't remember when they went to NY.
I also went to Elizabeth School I still have my grade one
reader and first printing book with my own drawings in it
imagine that! The only church I remember is Maria Trost
high up on a mountain lots of stairs to climb. On Sunday
afternoon we sometimes went to the Himmelteich for a small
boat ride.
bye for now.

Ridy Hoegler Skyrme:
Hilde and Regina -
Small world, isn't it! I also attended the Elizabeth Schule until the Ursulinenkloster was re-opened. It wasn't for long, maybe for one term. . . .can't remember that far back! We lived about two blocks from the school. Leonhardtstrasse, where the Ursulinenkloster is, was just one block further along.
Like you, Regina, we also went boating on the Hilmteich in the summer, and ice skating pretty much every afternoon during the winter. My parents used to visit friends in Rosenhain, but I never went along and I don't know whom they visited there. Maria Trost was a favorite Ausflug destination and I particularly remember an Erntedankfest
Feier in the Church, which was beautifully decorated with fruits and vegetables, sheafs of wheat and corn, etc., for the occasion - a true Thanksgiving scene without the turkey, of course! I recall hunting for mushrooms in the early morning hours in the woods a short distance from the Church with my aunt and uncle.
I am so glad that the Gottscheer Gedenkstaette is located up there now - the location is just perfect for a memorial.

Hi, Hilde and Ridy. Just finished some laundry (always more) I wonder when you both where at the school I was there in 1947/48 but not the whole year.
I also remember my Atte (Dad) sending me with a jug to the beer store on a Sunday afternoon can't do that here!
I wonder if that has also changed since then.
I also remember going to the Schlosturn Berg, a large clock tower on a large hill of small mountain it was always fun to go on these outings.
I sure hope the Canucks do well this game!

Helmuth: Yes I watched the game. It went into the 3rd overtime period at midnight our time here. I gave up and went to bed and missed Morrison's goal as he scored about 3 minutes into the period. I hope Monday's game isn't as hard on the nerves. Still can't believe they gave up a 4 goal lead.

Hi,Framz well to bad the Canucks didn't make it. I was at a meeting and got home and watched the rest of the game. I think the Canucks played very hard. To loss on overtime on a powerplay was just to bad.
Hi, Hilde hope to hear from you, sounds like you have a very interesting message for Ridy and me.
Jim, here in Kamloops the cold frost got alot of the hybrid roses too. I hope mine will show some buds soon, they don't look to good. My Azalia is OK. The bleeding hearts are blooming nicely, I love to garden.
Well it is a quarter to 12 and of to bed and hit the pillow, after a half glass of wine.

I wanted to remind all of the Plauderzimmer visitors to remember a young cousin who was one of the victims of the Columbine shooting on April 20, 1999. He also traced his roots back to Gottschee (and my Mausser side of the family) on his father's side.

- 170.201.180.33 - Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at 16:43:35 (UTC)
Ridy:
Be sure to watch tonight's game closely in that case, Helmuth! Rumor has it that a lot of the Ottawa fans (males, mostly) will appear in togas - as in the Senators in Old Rome! My sister finally found a good home for her old sheets and she figures it was for a good cause. Toronto flag vendors have been doing a booming business as well - many of the cars in the city sport at least one maple leaf flag. It's a fun atmosphere, and makes us forget how miserable our Blue Jays are doing so far.

Well, I don't know who to support now. My wife is supporting Montreal. She is from Edmonton but of course they didn't make it and she is not a Calary fan so is going with Montreal. Hi, all. Well Franz I think I'll root for Calgary since we need to have a team in the west, also our daughter lived in Calgary for a few years.

Franz of Vancouver:
Regina, Helmuth and Ridy.
I can not root for the Flames, they beat us. Congratulations to Ridy and the Leafs, but I think Montreal will prevail. Helmuth thank you for the sympathy , the Molsen people appreciate your patronage as do all Canadians, we need the money.Who do you predict will take the cup? I kinda favour Montreal. Can you believe here it is May and we are still playing hockey.Ridy what is going on with your justice system? The news made it sound pretty bad.

- 24.69.255.236 - Friday, April 23, 2004 at 01:42:08 (UTC)
Helmuth:
Franz, it's my pleasure to support the Canadian economy since I much prefer Molson Export to most American beers (except Samuel Adams and a few small local microbrews).

Neither the Wings nor the Avalanche are playing like Cup contenders. I like Tampa Bay. Much as I love Toronto the city, I can't root for the Leafs because of my dislike of two of their players who shall remain Tucker and Domi.

Montreal is a sentimental favorite because of my admiration for Alex Kovalev.

I was born in the Moschnitze area of Gottschee (in the eastern part), resettled in 1941 to Untersteiermark; my mom and I participated in the Flucht in 1945 and after living in various camps my parents found employment in Altfinkenstein by Villach, Austria. You are absolutely right. Tampa Bay are playing excellent hockey and look like a team that would deserve to win. Its not over yet but it does look like your prediction will come to pass. I found some bad refereeing in the Calgary game so its a little hard to guess the outcome of those two teams yet. Calgary has a lot of injured players and some bad calls against them so we will have to wait and see what happens when they return to home turf. I don't think they could take Tampa Bay even if they did get through this round. Our Canuck scored a bit goal for Canada to give them a draw instead of a loss.

Helmuth:
Franz, I just hope no one takes out LeCavallier or Martin St. Louis with a wrist chop the way Adam Graves (Rangers) did to Mario Lemieux 12 years ago in the playoffs. I still have not gotten over that one. These are the things about the game that just drive me nuts. I agree about the officiating too, enforcement of the rules is so spotty and inconsistent.

I believe I have information on your family. The names were Johann Koenig and Anna Wittreich. Much of the information comes from work that the GHGA has done. If interested, email.

Benny,
I had Franz, Irma, and Erna in file but not your mother so I am guessing that she was born aft 1941. Was there also a sister or relative named Frieda born in 1925?

Benny, GHGA stands for the Gottscheer Heritage and Genealogy Association. They have done great work in collecting information that allows others to find their families. I am a member. They have an online site. I would recommend checking it out.

Franz, indeed a couple of great games Tuesday. The Flames are doing great and Kiprosoff is turning everything away. You know the Red Wings are getting desparate when they put Yzerman on the "grind line".

Franz, you're welcome and it's always a pleasure to see new people contributing. I would be very remiss if I didn't mention that my sons both play developmental hockey and enjoy it. Their older cousin Derek Kump (my brother Bob's son) is a fantastic goalie and may be on his way to the pro's someday, look out for him. He lives and plays in Maine, formerly near Ithaca, and his team just missed going to the Junior championships.

Helmuth, What is your take on Brian Burke getting the axe? everybody in Vancouver is stunned , we just don't know what to make of this. Are you watching Calgary vs Detroit? Sure didn't like to see their Captain getting hurt but glad to his vision is going to be ok, and they seem to be holding their own without him.
I used to work with a Johnny Kump but I guess its a pretty common name. It would be nice to see a Gottscheer in the NHL wouldn't it.

- 24.69.255.236 - Tuesday, May 04, 2004 at 03:57:42 (UTC)
Helmuth:
Franz, I don't agree with it. Any GM who can get the team into the playoffs 4 years in a row on a limited budget should be rewarded, not axed. Unfortunately, the coach and GM often unfairly get the blame when it belongs on the players. Did you stay up to watch the Calgary victory?

Hello John, we're doing well here and hope the same for you and yours! Waiting for our weather to warm up a little (isolated frost this morning).

- 170.201.180.34 - Tuesday, May 04, 2004 at 13:44:45 (UTC)
Franz of Vancouver:
Helmuth, yes I watched the game. It was on from 7:30pm to about 10:15pm our time (including the overtime)so I didn't have to stay up past my bedtime. Calgary is a gritty team and it will be interesting to see how they do in the next round. Calgary fans were so jubilant and yet I haven't heard of any rioting or vandalism such as we would have had if Vancouver had won. Don't know why we have such a group of trouble makers that seem to ruin every celebration here whether it be Football, Hockey, Firework displays etc. Vancouver has cancelled many of the great events we used to have each year because of it and thats a shame.

Regina, I hope you stayed up and cheered on the Calgary Flames, your 2nd choice after the Canucks were eliminated. Every team I picked has been eliminated. Makes me wonder what I know about hockey!

Thanks for all the wonderful wishes on this Mother's Day.
WE APPRECIATE THEM.

Guten Abend Margaret. Always nice to see you checking in. Weather is weird all around I think, I wonder what it will be like this year.

Franz: Are we now at the end of our sharing and hockey. Did Regina, the lady in Kamloops predict this team to be the winner?

We, in Minnesota, too were in possible tornado watches but nothing happened here. Lots and lots of rain in the Southern part I am told. So, life is good.

To all the Gottscheers from Europe who will be checking in, Liebe Grüße an Euch alle überhaupt Freund Ted, Edith und die anderen. It is always nice to hear from all of you.

Tell us what the Gottscheers, in y our area, are planning for 2004. If you plan to visit the Moschnitze area in the former Gottschee please note that Father Sket from Semitsch, who serves the catholic parishes of Tschermoschnitz and Stockendorf has masses scheduled throughout the summer in the various village in the Moschnitze area. Way to go Father Sket.

Also, there are many restoration projects going on in the Moschnitze area including the Church Maria Himmelfahrt in Tschermoschnitz, the church in Mitterdorf and the steeple at the church in Tappelwerch is getting a beautiful new look. Donations are needed and gratefully accepted. If you, or anyone in your family is interested in making a donation, I will gladly accept them and process them and mail them to the appropriate parties in charge. Remember: Viele Hände machen ein schnelles Ende - Many hands make a quick end. TOGETHER WE CAN ACCOMPLISH MUCH.

Look forward to chatting later on.

Sophia: No we are not quite at the end of the hockey yet. There are 4 teams left. Calgary and Tampa Bay are playing their "best of 7 games in the semi-finals" and at the moment Calgary has won the first 2 games. They must win four games to go on to the finals. The winner - Calgary or Tampa Bay, will then play the winner of the other 2 teams who are playing their "best of seven". And yes, Regina from Kamloops has picked Calgary to win. We wait and see. Glad to hear your tornado watch has so far turned out ok. Hope summer is just around the corner for you.

What happens is this: you make a post, then you bookmark or "favorite" that page. Actually you are bookmarking the post itself, not the page. So later when you go to the bookmark you are posting again. Does that make sense?

So Bob, if you're reading this, delete your bookmark or favorite for Gottschee Plauderzimmer, and link to it through the home page (kt3l.com). THEN bookmark it without posting anything. After that you can read, post, whatever without worries.

In terms of the posts themselves...no harm done. A couple extra characters in 10 Mb of space is no big deal.

I forgive you for making that mistake but now you must come up with enough material as to why you think the flames are the greatest team in the NHL to fill the emty space. The way they are playing that shouldn't be hard. I wasn't going to support them because they beat our Canucks but as I watched them play and saw how they gave it their all they won me over.

Good evening Franz good to hear from you again. I watched one of the games in Victoria when visiting our newest grandson, he was born in mid Dec. that was exciting but so where the FLAMES. We have been very busy since we got back. Catching up on undone errands, but still take time for the games. Kamloops has a great team of it's own, the
Blazers. I think they have had a few players join the NHL.
It seems to me when things get tough, the FLAMES just seem to keep on going!

Franz of Vancouver:
Helmuth, I hope you are up watching some of the Sharks vs Flames. This is Stanley Cup material at its best do you not think.
Good job of filling up the space Regina ,yes Kamloops is quite the Hockey Town alright. We have a friend who coaches minor hockey there. The morning Weatherman on BCTV played for the Blazers and he talks about them all the time so we get to follow them through him. Well, back to the game.

- 24.69.255.236 - Friday, May 14, 2004 at 04:03:35 (UTC)
Helmuth:
Well Franz looks like the Sharks took that one. It was still scoreless when I went to bed but the Sharks prevailed this time. Yes Tampa Bay looked strong. I would like to see a Lightning/Flames Cup final.

Ridy, I tried to e-mail you at ridy@sympatico.com and it was returned as undeliverable with a message stating that relaying mail to sympatico.com is not allowed. My e-mail is stonitsel@aol.com so try if you can send me something.

Elfriede -
My address is sympatico.ca NOT sympatico.com (ca is for Canada, I assume). I am receiving e-mails from aol.com, so if you resend your e-mail it should reach me. It's when I have tried to send to anyone with an aol.com address that it bounces back to me.
Hope you've got some pictures of Gottscheer embroideries or other needlework for me!

Helmuth and Regina: What now? Tampa Bay is 2 out of 4 and Calgary is 2 out of 4. Do we still have hope of seeing Tampa vs Calgary?
Hope everyone is having weather as nice as ours.

Hi, I'm looking for information about the Blau-Weiss Gottschee SC over-30 team. All the web links seem to have ended in 1999. Does the team still exist?

Helmuth:
Trix you sure do know your stuff! I remember going to the B-W soccer games as a boy with my father and uncle.

Franz, here come the Flames! 3-2 lead but nobody is winning at home.

- 170.201.180.34 - Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at 14:00:56 (UTC)
Franz of Vancouver:
Helmuth: We are expecting Tampa Bay to do tonight what Calgary did last night. I think both of these teams just like to keep us on edge, big loss followed by big win just to keep us guessing.
Vancouver weather is just beautiful again today. I am sure it is even hotter in Kamloops where Regina is smiling over last nights big win by Calgary.

- 24.69.255.236 - Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at 17:29:08 (UTC)
Helmuth:
Franz, Tampa Bay did not disappoint did they? But I'm concerned because Philadelphia seems to be playing them much harder now. I think the series will go 7 games.

Will the hockey series ever end? Seems to me it's almost time for the new season to start! LOL
- 64.229.207.74 - Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at 14:32:48 (UTC)
Franz of Vancouver:
Helmuth: Yes we did notice that Philly is getting rough (and getting away with a lot) and thats worrisome. I do not like to see shots being given that are not intended to enhance winning but intended to injure. I didn't much like the fighting in the Flames/San Jose game and hope it doesn't continue. We are hoping the Flames will end it tonight.
Ridy: Your right, it is a long season.

- 24.69.255.236 - Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at 15:04:57 (UTC)

Hi Christine. Glad you are with us. Am assuming you have Gottscheer connections? Might I ask about your Gottscheers names and villages? Would enjoy hearing from you and learning more.

I was born in the Moschnitze area of the former Gottschee and have lived in America since 1952.

Ridy: Now we are down to 7 games tops but could be less, maybe 4 but I doubt it.

Indeed Franz and Regina, and all hockey fans for that matter...what a finish for Tampa Bay. I will be pulling for TB but won't be disappointed at all if Calgary takes it. I'm just very glad to have the Flyers out! Boy was it close. I think the team that displays better skill will win (not always the case in hockey).

Hello Christine;
Just got your e-mail, thank you. Being related at arm's length through marriage only is good enough for me. We'll just say we're distant cousins, and I'm sure we're not wrong on that.

Ridy Hoegler Skyrme:
Christine - it doesn't look as if we're going to have any company here this evening. There must be a hockey game on TV!
The Plauderzimmer was very popular and lively in the not-too-distant past, but has been suffering from lack of participation recently. Maybe we can resurrect some interest in it again.

Ridy This is great news and rather ironic too as I just made the trip to look for Franz, as a child I remembered him
2 of the ranches he owned are now golf courses and one is being subdivided. My Daughter is 56. My son in law was quite interested in the golf courses as he is an avid golfer
in fact he played up here yesterday and again today. Keeps hisgolf cart here. Take care Ridy

Sophia
Thank you for the Email "memories and Reflections"
Found it verry intersting but Aloisia Schmuck was also my great Grand mothers name but she was not from Tapplewerch .
but I do remmeber a lot of the other names you mentioned particular the name Josef Frank he did have a verry nice house I think his was the only one to have had a flashing porcelan he was also instrumantal in putting on Xchistmas plays ect.I was in one of those plays as a member of the 7 dwarfs in a play" snow white"" I think I had 2or 3 words" where is my pick". We used to learn the words in his house in the lower part the room was large it had benches all around the walls where made what looked like small tree trunks sawn in half and varnished really nice . I am going to ask my mother maybe it will come to her who all those people were. Thank you . Hallo Ted Meditz melde dich doch einmal. My wife did not check my spelling so please forgive.

Hi, Franz I hear you have been watching the games. I have not had much time to watch them. Hope the Flames do well.
Hi, Ridy do you have relatives in Richmond BC? There are 2 familys named Hoegler that live there. There are
Joe, Magdalena, and twin boys, and cousins Elfi, Harry and
Eric.

Good Afternoon Mr. Germany calling. Nice to hear from you. I wish you all the best. Keep up your wonderful work on Gottschee, have a GREAT trip to the AG in Klagenfurt and to der alten Heimat. Bleib gsund und danke für Deine vielen, vielen guten Arbeiten über unsere Heimat.

Franz of Vancouver:
Helmuth: Canada won that one in fine form. We think the Tampa fans angered the Flames with their booing when they were introduced so they went all out to win. Sure hope Calgary fans are not that rude when Tampa plays there.
Regina: You will just have to find time to see one or two of these playoff games, they are two great teams. Thursday should be just as exciting.
Ridy: Just a few more to go!

- 24.69.255.236 - Wednesday, May 26, 2004 at 02:57:39 (UTC)
Regina:
Hi, Franz, yes I do hope to watch the game on thursday.
Hope it doesn't go to late. Have to be up by 5 on Fri. AM
to go to Penticton and take the grandchildren to a

Ridy thanks for the email just finished one to you.
good night all.

Franz I agree, the Flames were in great form and the Lightning were flat. I worry about Khabibulin, he can be brittle at times. I think the visiting team is always booed no matter the city. It's a long series so we shall see!

What!? No comments about the hockey game last night? The headline in my paper reads: Flames struck by Lightning
and that sounds like a noteworthy event to me. . .

- 64.229.176.112 - Friday, May 28, 2004 at 11:19:41 (UTC)
Helmuth:
Ridy you are just an earlier riser than I, it would seem! Franz is on the west coast so naturally we beat him. In my opinion, the first game or two the teams are just feeling each other out. Now that the series is tied at one apiece, the real fun begins.
- 170.201.180.34 - Friday, May 28, 2004 at 13:21:33 (UTC)
Franz of Vancouver:
Helmouth: Yes as Ridy states Lightning has struck. One of our papers says "BOLTS STRIKE BACK" the other one boldly states "FLAMES DOUSED" I think that pretty well sums up last nights game. The next game should be interesting as you say .
Ridy: The end is getting closer.
Hope you both have einen schönen tag it is quite cool and wet here today.
Hallo Regina hope all is well up your way. Ted, now I know who Mr. Germany is. Nice town you live in thank you for the photo.
