Ah, you also had a musical grandfather. Opa Kump traveled far and wide and played at many events, as I'm sure yours did.

Hi,
After just being on Pz1 and PZ2 I have a question and a concern. As I scroll down PZ1 page I see no evidence of abuse. Have I missed something or was something removed? However, what is written in PZ2 is very interesting and could be of interest to someone who is new to searching for their ancesters but would not think of signing up for PZ2. As I understand it the purpose of PZ2 is not to make PZ1 obsolete.

By the way what has hppened to our Italian Gottscheer? Is he well?

Hi Irene, I'm fine and check out this website a few times a week.I'm not an Italian Gottscheer,my father once told me of his (step-grandfather whose name was Fabian). This was my great grandmother's second husband. There were childern from this marriage but my grandmother was from the first. A point of interest, although I never met anyone from the Fabian side, I believe there were two girls who came to NY in the 20' or 30's and danced with the Rockketts at Radio City in New York City.My Grandmother was half Gottscheer and half Viennese, Frank

Is there anyone who lived in Ridgewood/Glendale years ago who may remember Bar & Grill named Michitsch, and where it was located? If you know/remember, a response will be appreciated...Thank You...

Paul, good news....Michitsch's Bar & Grill...my parents use to go there as did my mother's parents in the 1940's...it was located on the corner of Gates and Woodward Ave (address prob on Woodward)...my mother and her friends use to dance there, attended weddings there...dont know the owners' names but they had two daughters - Alma and Edna....Edna married a Joseph Lindner, who, if he is still alive would be in his early 80's....they relocated to Hawley, PA . Dont know when bar & grill was sold but my father thinks he attended a bowling dinner there in early 50's. Hope this helps you.

Thank You Elaine-you did it all. I don't remember those names, but my sister-in-lawEmma Kren who also moved to hawley must have talked about them being in Hawley..the name Lindner kind of rings a bell-a very distant bell I might add..Now let's see who can solve this one: My Father-in-law& Mother-in-law had a bar & grill on Palmetto and Onderdonk-it was before I even moved into the neighborhood. My wife doesn't remember the name of the place, but she has memories of how hard they worked-her mother going early in the morning to clean up the place & prepare the "FREE LUNCH" ---what happened to those good old days???? AAAAND HOW ABOUT MARQUARTS ON MYRTLE AVE, NEXT TO GELOPTERS TOY STORE WHERE I WORKED PART TIME FOR THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS....MR. GELOPTER USED TO BRING IN CONTAINERS OF SOME KIND OF DRINK FOR HIM AND HIS SON, AND A SOFT DRINK FOR ME....OH, OH, SORRY, I GOT CARRIED AWAY AND TOOK SO MUCH SPACE-SUCH GOOD MEMORIES..THANKS AGAIN ELAINE..

Paul, my parents tell me that there was a pool hall on the corner of Palmetto and Onderdonk operated by a relative of my grandfather; they were Joe & Frances Kump. ALso my mother's cousin's husband operated a bar on the corner of Palmetto and Seneca, called Young's. Then there was another bar & grill in the middle of the block on Palmetto between Seneca and Onderdonk, but they cant recall the name. Finally, what is your wife's maiden name??? According to my mother her aunt Julie had a friend Emma Kren, but that woman is deceased - she had a daughter Lorraine; is this your sister-in-law?? I do remember Gelopters - closed several years ago.

And I am the italian guy she married and broke all the rules-that was a looong time ago...We remember the name julie-was it Julie Koenig by any chance? We are celebrating Emmas son Louis Kren birthday this coming Tuesday-he is my little 72 year old nephew!!Let's see if we can match anymore names...

ElaineTramposchHaufe:
Yes, Paul, you got it - it is Julie Koenig (maiden name Verderber) - my great aunt-= from Niedermoesel. Small world. Julie is 95 yrs old now, still living on her own in N.J.....her son and her daughter both predeceased her. What a great lady she is! Her first cousin, on her mother's side, recently passed away in Tennessee at the grand age of 106 yrs old, Hulda Dickensheets (nee Stalzer, I think) - this woman's son did not even know he was 1/2 Gottscheer.

Jim:
Thank you, Paul and Elaine. My memories of that part of the neighborhood are limited. I stayed mostly south and west but I do remember the large number of bars and restaurants in the area. Since I had not found out my Gottscheer connection until six or seven years ago, the names of the owners did not sink in.

Frank:
For Elaine T. and Paul, Michitsch's bar was later called Hoge's and after that Martin's and Karl's and today it's a Latino club. Our first night in America, my dad and his brothers went there and took my sister and me along. When the men at the bar found out we just came from Europe they took their dollars from the bar and stuffed them inside my shirt. It's a fond memory,I was four and we were penniless as a family, the year was 1950.The bar on Palmetto and Seneca between the block was called Otto's.Joe Linder and Edna are still alive and living in Hawley Pa. Mr Linder is still playing his button box and performing with his band.

Did the Catholic church have nuns in the Gottschee area? I have seen a few Gottscheers who were priests there but can't recall ever coming across a name in my research that said "sister", of course referring to being a nun.

I wonder where you would find the records of the priesthood or the nuns. I did not see any mention in the family book for Tschernembl, and certainly not any mention in the birth records or marriage records. One of my great aunts was a nun, but that was in this county after they came here.

Hi, yes it is strange but my Mother never mentioned
anything about Nuns or Sisters in the Nesseltal area,
either.

- 24.67.253.204 - Tuesday, November 22, 2005 at 03:42:24 (UTC)
Gregg Lickteig:
Marilu, yes a book of records for priests/nuns could be somewhat helpful. In one aspect it could flag someone to stop looking for descendants or a marriage of an individual if they were serving the Church in this capacity. Anyone have further knowledge on the "nun" question?

Nadškofijski arhiv Ljubljana, Krekov trg 1,1000 Ljubljana, tel: 00386 61 133 70 44

I am curious abut the priest/nun subject myself. Don't remember ever hearing of a nun in Gottschee but I was very young at the time.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL OF YOU SOUTH OF THE 49TH PARALLEL!
Hope you all reach your destinations safely and enjoy a wonderful celebration with your families.

Regarding nuns in Gottschee, Ingeborg Rom Weber attended school at the Marienheim (also called the Waisenheim/Orphanage) in the City of Gottschee and the teachers were Vincentine nuns. Generally speaking, the villages of Gottschee would have been much too small to support a convent. One of the hospitals which served Gottschee was located in Laibach, and it was also staffed by nuns. I have posted a picture of a Vincentine nun which I found on the internet, and some of you may recognize the habit worn by the nuns in Gottschee.

Sorry, I haven't been able to figure out how to transfer the pictures of two nuns on the above web page onto the photo page. Possibly somebody else can figure out how to do it -- or simply check them out abovc. The hats the nuns wore were very distinctive. That much I remember!

Hi,
I'm polishing silver and thought I would share an easy way of dipping silver to clean it. Line a plastic bowl or bucket wilth aluminum foil. Dissolve approx. I/2 cup of washing soda (found in the detergent section of the supermarket) into a quart of hot water. Place silver on the aluminum foil. Wait a minute and rinse the piece.
If you are using silver silverware and only the prongs are a little tarnished put the entire silverware into the pan making sure each piece is touching the aluminum. This takes only a few minutes and the silverware is sparkling.

Good Evening to you. Winter has arrived and we have a nice amount of that white stuff. Ice fishing is in full swing. Even the cars are now driving into the lakes.

I was watching PBS tonight and enjoyed Christmas in Europe. A part covered Bavaria where the people in the countryside, on Christmas, eve go through the house and blessing it along with some burning stuff. You know what I man. Didn't the Gottscheers do the same either at Christma and/or New Years? Could someone please share? It just seems like I can see that custom before my eyes. Thank you.

Paul, Merry Christmas to you and Adie. Doran Avenue is near Woodhaven and Metropolitan Avenues. We owned one of the tudor houses on that street before we sold and moved to Glen Head (near Glen Cove). I went to elementary school at St. Pancras which was just up the block across Myrtle Avenue.

One of the old Gottscheer customs was that a man (preferably a dark haired man) be the first to enter a Gottscheer home in the New Year. This is supposed to bring good luck. I know my mother-in-law made sure this was done. Does anyone also follow this practice and can anyone tell me why this is so?
- 64.12.116.10 - Sunday, January 01, 2006 at 18:20:37 (UTC)
Trix:
Yup, Elfriede the same was the custom in our house. In fact my mother was always waiting for a man to wish us Happy New Year before a woman. I followed that policy too but it doesn't always hold true. I guess they felt that men brought more than luck than women. We know that we are equals, don't we?

Hello. I was looking over this website and saw that some of you have lived in Glendale/Ridgewood, NY. My husband is almost 50 and spent his first four years near Myrtle Ave. in this area. Some of his family is still there, on 68th St. I think. Do you know the Windischmann's?
Thanks.

Pam, I just turned 50 and lived near the intersection of Myrtle and Fresh Pond Rd. (on 71st Avenue). My family lived there till I was 17. Don't know the Windischmann's but the name sure sounds familiar. Paul Brasino, does any of this sound familiar?

Margaret, I too saw the strudel recipe in the paper. Stephie had siblings, one was Anna Mausser who married William Yonke. I went to church/school with some of William's grandsons. I am also related to this family. Is your Jonke/Yonke family related to these?
- 70.250.201.38 - Thursday, January 12, 2006 at 02:41:08 (UTC)
Margaret Jonke:
Gregg:
I am a cousin to a cousin, you might say. William Jonke was my dad's older brother. Anna Mausser Jonke was his wife. We called their cousins, our cousins. The young man with the studel recipe is one of those "cousins" - honorary ones. Have sent the strudel recipe article to a ton of "cousins". We still have one aunt by marriage -Leni Jonke - of Mahopac, NY. That's all of the aunts and uncles named Jonke living now. We are a big clan.

Margaret, Anna Mausser's mother was Anna Kropf, and her mother was Maria Eisenzopf. Maria is the sister of my great grandmother Magdalena Eisenzopf. Anna along with 2 of her sisters Stephie and Frieda used to come visit at my grandparents home in KCK many many years ago (before I was born). PS...I love strudel!!! When I was younger my parents used to buy it from some Germans in the Strawberry Hill area of KCK every year.

Hi Sharon, I'm doing pretty good. Started working for the county I live in recently and am really liking it. We did a lot of remodeling in our home over the last 3 months...new carpet, wood floors, new windows and painted two rooms. Now we're hybernating through the winter months, although it's nice out today (middle 60's).

FYI for those who have/had relatives in Kansas City -- Most Gottscheers who imigrated to Kansas City seem to have originally lived in the Strawberry Hill area in Wyandotte County in Kansas City, Kansas. However there were still a lot who lived, moved or married in Jackson County in Kansas City, Missouri. Jackson County now has all of their marriage records online at www.jacksongov.org I have found lots of marriage records for my research here. Wyandotte County in KCK does not yet have their marriage records online.

Gregg, I'm a Kropf also and I remember my dad once mentioned we were distant cousins of the Eisenzopf's. My family comes from Schalkendorf.I believe all the Kropf's from Gottschee have the same roots going back to the 1500's.But,then all the Gottscheer's are related somehow if you go back through the centuries.

Frank, Ken Kropf from California's great grandparents were Josef Kropf and Maria Eisenzopf. I believe Josef was born in Grafenfeld and Maria born in Gottschee #6. I show Josef & Maria's oldest daughter Anna as being from Schalkendorf. There were other siblings but I don't have notations on where they were born, although they could be Schalkendorf also as Anna was. Anna's siblings were Johann, Franz, Ferdinand and Friedrich. I have dates etc for them. Does any of this fit your family?

:
Gregg, I knew Ken's great uncle Friedrich from Hawley Pa. and his cousin Frank Mausser who passed away not to long ago, was a life long friend of my father's.Ken had sent me the family tree but, I believe we're probably related somewhere in the 1800's.The first Kropf was a lumberjack or woodcutter who came from Switzerland.Look at the early history of Gottschee, then go to the urber of 1574.He had six son's and from these son's are your Kropf's of Gottschee.

Kathy Rosenkranz:
Hello. This is my first time posting to the PZ although I have to admit, I do eavesdrop from time to time. There's a wealth of info to be gleaned from all you folks that contribute to the PZ. Thank you very much for that.

I'm researching my grandfather, Josef Schmuck from Ribnik 6 and want to start checking into his military service. I plan to upload a picture of him in a military uniform that dates anytime from 1898 to 1907 (most likely 1898-1900). He came to the USA in 1908. Does anyone else have a military photo from the same photographer? Has anyone who's done research on their Gottscheer ancestor's military service any suggestions on the most logical recruiting depot for the Ribnik/Tschermoschnitz area and where the headquarters staff may have been stationed around 1900? Apparently knowing this will be helpful in viewing the LDS Militar-Schematismus (military records) of the Austro-Hungarian empire to locate a particular person. Also, any suggestions for websites to search would be appreciated. The following site was suggested to me: www.kuk-wehrmacht.de/regiment/ It shows an excellent recruiting map dating from 1898 plus loads of other info, all in German unfortunately. I appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thank you.
Kathy

Yes Eduard Stalzer - saw the wonderful article and enjoyed it very much. I met Viktor Stalzer during the WELCOME HOME GOTTSCHEER CELEBRATION in Grafenfeld by Gottschee in 1999. This event was organized and sponsored by Erik Krisch, President of the Peter Kosler Gottscheer Verein and his members. It was a HUGE success.

Gregg: Sveti Peter pod Sveti Gorami translates to Saint Peter Beneath (the) Holy Mountain (per my limited knowledge of Slovenian). It is located just below Bistrica ob Solti. If you Google Obcina Benedikt Slovenia, the first hit will take you to an interesting site where you can further search for the village which eventually gives you lat/long and a map.

Hi Sheila. Just GREAT to see your message. Hope is well with you and yours.
From 1941 to May of 1945 my mother and I (along with many other Gottscheers) lived near Bistrica ob Sotli (or Königsberg, in German). I thought St. Peter etc is the church ON TOP of the mountain overlooking the valley. I think it is the church that has the Stations of the Cross chapels along the steep incline. I remember clearly participating in one of the pilgrimages, saying the Stations of the Cross along the way) and then finally arriving at the beautiful church atop. I think this also the church that has a statute of our Holy Mother. It does not matter where in church you stand she is watching you. I will be visiting the site you mention and THANK YOU much for your excellent contributions.

Sheila K.:
Trix: Love to be of help when I think I can! Do we perhaps have a church and a village of the same name? Pod translates as below, beneath, etc. so that's the way I read it. However, is the village below, perhaps, with the church at the top? The website I referred to was listing a village by that name, I think, rather than a church. I noticed in Slovenia the churches are always at the highest point in the town or village which means the churchgoers get their exercise climbing the hill to attend mass! When are you going to Slovenia? I'm hoping to go again but don't have any definite plans. Haven't been since 2001.

Hi Sheila: You wrote:

Yes, that is exactly as it is. The church is on top of the mountain with the village below.
The next GHGA hosted tour will be in 2008. I feel the need to go again but my life is unsettled at this time. I am hopeful though and the next time Maria and I want to spend some quality time in Untersteiermark (the area to which the Gottscheers resettled in 1941). We were there in 1984, connected with the owners of the house in which my mother and I lived until 1945 but I have learned so much about the area since that time that it would be wonderful to revisit and connect with people in the area. Lets both say a prayer.
Let us haar from you again. It is always a pleasure.

Thank you Trix, Sheila and Irene. Trying to piece what you have all written together now. If I understand all this right then Sveti Peter Pod Sveti Gorami is a village in the city of Obcina Benedikt? And this village also has a church of the same name up on the hill? Now it is located in Slovenia, but what country or whatever was it in during 1846? Like Gottschee being in the Austro-Hungarian empire and many of us write it simply as Austria. Was this place also in Austro-Hungary aka Austria?

Sheila K.:
Gregg: IN SHORT (lots of variables here), Slovenia as we know it today, was in what was then known as the Austrian Empire which was created in 1815. In 1867 the Empire was reorganized and the result was the creation of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy which lasted until 1918. I think the term "Austria" was used as a general description during those time periods and not to be confused with present day Austria.

Ridy Hoegler Skyrme:
Apropos the comment about churches being located on the highest point in or near a village, there was a very practical reason for this. Back in the Middle Ages churches were also used as look-out points, especially during times of the Turkish invasions. The churches were built much like small fortresses, with very thick walls and high church towers, and were also known as ‘Wehrkirchen’ – meaning defence churches. When a village was under siege, some inhabitants could take refuge in the church and defend themselves against the enemy from that vantage point.

Thank you Ridy. Good to hear from you. This reminds of the church in Muckendorf by Tschermoschnitz. It too sit atop of quite a steep area overlooking the Moschnitze valley and all to way to Croatia. The story goes that whenever bad weather was approaching the bells at Muckendorf would ring alerting the people throughout the area.To this day, even though the remains of the church is in bad shape, it is still quite a site to see. Now that I think about it a plaque telling of the above history should be erected on site.

William - you will find this interesting:

Dear Trix:
Haselbach bei Gurkfeld did have its own cemetery. My father was buried there in 1942 but in the 1990s when I visited the cemetery the grave was used by a local family. As I remember a grave is only held for 10 years and if nobody pays for the lot it will be used by somebody else's family. I would assume that this holds for all Gottscheers who died during this period 1942 to 1945.
Best regards, HT
(If you wish to get in touch with HT please let me know and I will give you his e-mail address).

Hi Lawrence Pausche from BC. Nice to meet you. I would certainly like to know more about your Gottscheer connections, i.e. to which area and/or village in the former Gottschee. Glad you found us and we look forward to many good conversations with you. Pausche - sounds like your ancestors could be from the Moschnitze area. My family and I have been to Nanaimo on the way to Vancouver. Beautiful part of the world. I believe there might be other Gottscheer on Vancouver Island. Do you know of any? Feel free to send me an e-mail at wyants@mlecmn.net

St. Peter or Sentpeter is former name of Bistrica ob Sotli. Kunsperk is village near Bistrica.

Now we know. Have a good, good Sunday.

Does anyone know where Betteshgratz, Austria is/was? I am trying to find some information on a Fr.Andrew Skopez who was born there. I believe he had some connection to Gotteschee. Any help will be appreciated.

Eduard - Thank you for your wishes. I appreciate them.
Peggy - I am not familiar with this town in Austria but have you tried typing it into your search engine to see what it might show?
What makes you think that Fr. Skopez might have a connection to Gottschee. Interesting. Good luck.

- 209.240.245.105 - Monday, February 27, 2006 at 04:42:44 (UTC)
Peggy:
Fr. Skopez was an early parish priest of St. Michael's in Fryburg, PA. my hometown.I've always believed that he was probably the reason that my ancestor, Mathias Smrekar emigrated to Fryburg. It was a pretty remote place at the time. I'm trying to find out if Betteshratz is near Naklo.
- 24.130.106.80 - Monday, February 27, 2006 at 05:02:11 (UTC)
Irene:
Peggy,
Trix is correct. If you type in the name Andrew Skopez into Google you will find much information. The Fryburg area was populated by many Germans and it may be be the simple reason for immigration to the area of more German speaking people.

Sophia aka Trix:
Pwggy - I want to go back to your message. You mention Naklo. The village of Naklo that I know about is very close to Tschernembl (Cronomelj) not at all far from the former Gottscheer settlement. Is this the area you are talking about? I still have no clue where Betteshratz might be. Do you think it is in Slovenia?

Irene:

Peggy,
This is what I found on the Internet for Fr. Skopez. Do you think there could be an alternate spelling for Betteshratz?
Born in Carnolia Austria, November 19, 1802Died October 24, 1887Father Skopez is laid to rest at Saint Michael’s in FryburgRev.

Irene:
Peggy,

Below is an excerpt from a website which has a detailed history of the area.

Carniola (Slovenian: Kranjska; German: Krain) is a traditonal and historical region of Slovenia. As part of Austria-Hungary, the region was a crown land officially known as the Duchy of Carniola (Vojvodstvo Kranjsko/Herzogtum Krain) until 1918. The region is subdivided into Upper Carniola, Lower Carniola (with White Carniola), and Inner Carniola.

Sophia aka Trix:
To Lawrence and all other interested parties regarding the question about a list of the 300 original families who settled in Gottschee (courtesy of John Krauland. (Lienfeld -New York). THANK YOU JOHN.

He is probably referring to the 1509 Almanac of Thomas Chroen, the Bishop of Laibach, who said that the Holy Roman Emperer Carl IV, who defeated the Franks and Thuringians, later sent 300 of their prisoners to Gottschee to Friedrich Von Ortenburg as a punishment. It is even claimed by some that they settled in Verdreng and Verderb (meaning wasteland, ruined land, etc.). This prompted Valvasor to say that the Gottscheers are Franken and Thuringen. They are, in reality, mostly from Tyrol and Carinthia in Austria, especially from where the Ortenburgers owned lands there and in Gottschee.

The bishops 1509 writing is basically an unproven myth but may have a small (very small) touch of reality. This was past the time of the Patriarch of Aqulieia who note the Gottscheer settlement in 1339. There would be no such list

Hi Sharon, Magdalena Stimpfl married Josef Eisenzopf. She was born in Hohenegg 6. I don't have direct access to microfilm records right now. The location by me doesn't have it so I'd have to order them. I know Frances Stimpfl's father was Mathias and they're from Hohenegg, but it's my understanding there could be two or three Mathias Stimpfl's from this area & time frame that could be her father. I was searching to see if anyone here could match her up before I start ordering microfilm records.

Greetings from a rainy Waukenabo. Hope you are enjoyed a good Sunday wherever you are.
I know of at least 4 different parties that are making plans to visit the former Gottschee this May. Wish I could go with them.

If any of you are thinking about doing the same please keep this in mind. On May 28 the newly constructed chapel in Langenton (Smuka) honoring Alois and Helena Hoegler Kraker, born there, will be dedicated by a special mass. This beautiful new chapel was largely financed by members of the Kraker family, the current residents of Langenton, by a generous lady who donated the parcel of land and GHGA members who have no connection to Langenton but believe in honoring our Gottscheer ancestors. This project was under the direction of the Peter Kosler Gottscheer Verein with Erik Krisch at the helm. If you are in the area why not join the Kraker family in Langenton. What a wonderful day it will be.

Hilde Kobetitsch:
Hello to everyone, well this year sure passed us by quickly, already it is Easter again. What happens to us when we get to be 21 and over; everything goes by so quickly. At Easter I always think back of the times in Europe and the traditional Easter we celebrated. It was the best time of my life, even though we had little, Easter was just special. I am so grateful to my parents for having instilled the religious aspects in me; without religion it would not be the same. The 3 days of going to church and to finalize it, the procession on Holy Saturday with the wonderful and meaningful mass and the blessing of the food. As I recall, the food just tasted so much different since it was blessed; in our family we still take the food to be blessed on Holy Saturday; that is one tradition which I faithfully carry on for my family.

With this I would like to wish everyone the most blessed and happy Easter. The same is wished from the EOUV club in Cleveland. Bleibet gesuend.

William: Do you get the magazine German Life? They have a classified section including translations with names and phone numbers. That could be start for you to get an idea of costs.

sophia, no, i don't get that magazine. i did though find someone on-line from a croatian religious organization in ny who does translation work on the side. we're working out a price now. (the document is in croatian. it makes lots and lots of mention of my family name and the names of a few families to whom we are linked via marriages throughout the 19th century; it also makes lots of mention of the gottschee towns and their surrounding areas from which my family comes).

Hi, Hope all is well with everyone!
I would like to know the date of the trip in May to
Gottschee. Is it a tour similar to the one in 2005?
My sister mentioned she is ready to go to Gottchee, for
a visit. Her daughter would like to go also.
