Thank you Helmuth. I did check it out and find it very, very interesting. A couple of errors but that could have happened by accident. I am certainly interested in learning more about the message including possible names of the Gottscheers or other entries they may have in their book.

Scott, no problem, I resized it; have a look. Trix, I was glad that Herr (possibly Father?) Obermayr found our site and added the information.

Agree Helmuth. Would be very interes3ting to learn how Father Obermayr found your site. Glad he did. I have already written to him and hope for a reply.
We are having Indian summer. Not the best for deer season but very welcomed by this Gottscheer lady.

Hope all Americans on the PZ are voting today! I remember when my parents and grandparents first became citizens, how seriously they took voting. Hope someday we return to that kind of ethic, for everyone.

Your message Helmuth reminded me of my parents. Voting was always a very important day. We would go and vote and then my father would take my mother and I for dinner. Those are good, good memories.

Gregg Lickteig:
Scott, are the Metz family of KC relatives of yours? I live and grew up here and remember mowing the lawn of an elderly lady named Metz or Meditz for a number of years when I was a teenager. This was in a KC suburb on the Kansas side. She was the nicest lady.

Jim:
Hello,
Marilu, How are you doing? Have the GHGA marriage records from Tschernembl been of any help to you? I am slowly going through all the marriages. Very, very slowly and linking in names with the main FTM file. I haven't been looking specifically for information on your branches but took a quick look ---- there are some links further back as well as siblings listed. You might want to take a look.

Gregg, how are you doing in the heartland? Ditto, Scott --- are you a Cardinal fan?

Trix, congrats on the election. As usual, I voted straight Republican. Alas and alack, all my votes were for naught. The party went down in flames this year. The conservative Republicans scare me as do the "too far left" Democrats. The middle ground seems to be loosing on both sides. Enough politics --- always a dangerous subject.

Time to get going on a bright Saturday morning.

Jim:
One final note-- as you know, working with others on genealogy puzzles is a hobby of mine (as well as a couple of others who visit this site) -- Quite often someone will post a query about finding relatives. I answer the query with an email offering to help, but get no response. Does this happen to anyone else? I don't understand why someone would post a query and then not respond.
- 64.12.116.130 - Saturday, November 11, 2006 at 14:14:10 (UTC)
Scott:
Hey there Jim,

As for a Cardinal fan..big time fan..In fact I was in St Louis last weekend and got to meet So Taguchi (got some stuff sutographed for my 11 year old).

As I have been getting into my family's genealogy, and having received help from you and others, I feel it only natural to return the favor. I too have run into the nor response from my emails, so you are not alone.

As for the electin, since I am an independent, I vote any which way I plz, although I voted 95% republican this year (mostly local stuff)..and 100% of those I voted for got in.

- 206.246.6.226 - Saturday, November 11, 2006 at 15:01:12 (UTC)
Marilu:
Hi Jim and Scott
I too have run into the problem of unanswered emails. Jim, I have the microfilms of Tschernembl for birth and marriage on permanent loan at the LDS library here. I transcribed all of them about 6 years ago, but only for Bistriz where my Peschel family is from and a few entries in connecting villages. Some of them I have in the computer on Excel, and some are still on the forms I made for transcribing. I refer to them a lot. The microfilm I have for one is better than the one that Kate has and I helped fill in some names for the CD. Those films all came in handy when I was working on Sugar Creek, Iowa, night and day. I actually have not been working on my Peshel family lately, I have been working to fill in all the Underberg family since I was in Germany this summer. Martin my cousin in Germany is also working on it from his end. But of course, I never still to one project at a time, and slip in another family whenever I run across some thing.

Gregg Lickteig:
Greetings to you, Jim. All is well in KC. I was pulling for the Cardinals to win, since my team is really no team at all as of lately. But my favorite to watch has still got to be the Yankees. I'm tied up in the middle of a kitchen remodel at the moment. The outside chores are done til spring.
- 70.129.125.246 - Sunday, November 12, 2006 at 22:04:34 (UTC)
Gregg Lickteig:
Most of the time I leave the genealogy questions alone that are posted, unless they pertain to someone I already have info on in my file. Then I might email them, and usually have had decent response when doing so. Jim, Marilu and others here I'm sure do many more responses so there's better odds of getting a dud. You sure would think they'd answer if they took the time to ask in the first place. Gotta run, take care.

Good evening Gottscheer friends,
The Gottscheer Club in Cleveland wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday. We for one are very happy and grateful to be here in the United States; so the Thanksgiving celebration has a special meaning to all of us.

Hi Chicago Connection
Happy thanksgiving to you too, and everyone else. We will have a house full and then some!

I have been wondering what the rest of the world is hearing about the Christo Over the River Project. There is a lot of controversy about it. I think it will spoil that part of the river canyon, and I don't think that the roads in the area can handle the volumn of traffic. You only have to be on that road on a Sunday afternoon in the summertime to see it cannot handle the traffic. Sure, it would have economic benefit, but is it worth what it would ruin. I mayself, am not in favor it it.

Have you been in our area lately? I hope you would stop to see me if you are in the area.

Happy Thankgiving to everyone. I have an especially good reason to be thankful this year. I had a seizure a year ago an thank goodness my husband was there to call 911....turned out to be a brain tumor and that was caused by a tumor in the lung. Well the Drs got rid of the tumor in the brain with a procedure called x-knife which involves no cutting but a major blast of radiation to the tumor itself and it has worked beautifully. Been thru 2 rounds of chemo and now am on a drug called Tarceva. It is a chemo pill and is keeping everything stable. The tumor in the lung is gradually getting smaller. Soooo like I said I am very thankful this year and so glad to still be around. Hope this finds everyone healthy and happy as you can be!

Guten Abend. Hope all had a blessed Thanksgiving.
And if we put on a pound or two, we can be extra thankful for a country where so much food is available. We welcomed our first Great grandchild on Nov 20th. Tyler David Brainard was 7 lb 7 oz.
Mother and baby doing well. Dad has calmed down. He was with our grand daughter during a C section and was pretty wobbly after. We are truly blessed.

I need this information by tomorrow morning if possible. I have been on the Internet all afternoon. What brand name flour do you use to make strudel dough? A friend is going to help me pull the dough paper thin. I want the dough to be like philo or filo dough. I know I need a high glutin content. Thank you.
- 72.231.190.244 - Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 21:12:45 (UTC)
Elfriede:
Irene,
When we make strudel for the Gottscheer Country Club, we use Hecker's Unbleached flour. After making the dough and kneading it to a smooth finish, we place it in a plastic bag with just a very little oil and let it sit in a cool room overnight. The next morning it should be Ok to start pulling the dough.

Trix:
Hey, Irene, I am proud of you for trying the Strudel. You will do GREAT. I use Robin Hood flour; work the dough into a smooth finish (Like Ellie said), place on a well floured plate, cover it with a fitting bowl and put it in a warmed oven for 1/2 hr; then I proceed to spread it until paper thin. I make many Strudel a year and this is the only way I have ever done it. Let us know how you do ok? YOU WILL DO FINE.

Hi Beverly,
I must confess I've never eaten Wolferman's povitica even though I've lived her all my life. But I can vouch for and highly recommend a place called the Kobe House her in KC. Their website is www.kobehouse.com This lady was a Croatian and married a Kobe (who I think was either Gottscheer or Austrian anyway). Orders get backed up this time of year, and their website suggest all Christmas delivery orders be submitted by Dec 9. It is probably KC's best povitica.

I wonder if we contacted all the family bakeries that make and sell Povitica we could find Gottscheer and also among their customers??? Just a thought.
As to snow and ice, Oklahoma is covered...when we got a new snowplow a couple of years ago..it made the front page along with a pic of the fellow that was going to be the driver.

Good Morning to you all. For what it is worth - I really miss our good conversations and sharing in the Plauderzimmer. I guess we are all busy people. I know that for me the time just seems to fly. Maybe, just maybe, one of these days we will get into a good discussion about our Gottscheer heritage and customs. Two topics that I need to learn more about are the traditions of a Gottscheer wedding and Gottscheer funeral. Anyone? THANK YOU for sharing.
Very, very cold at Waukenabo but the sun is trying to peak through. We do have about 1 inch of snow which may stay. We are looking at 35F by Friday.

Regina in Kamloops:
Hi, everyone. Hope all is well with you all.
About the bleached flour, my brother worked in a flour mill and said that it is unhealthy to use bleached flour just use the regular white flour Robin Hood. My Mom did just that and her baking turned out great.
About weddings in Gottchee they where an all day
affair with a High Mass for the marriage ceremony
and then to a Gastouse for a lunch then some pictures also. Then they would visit with friends and family and again have a dinner for everyone (if
family could aford it) and celebrated into the evening.
We have quite alot of snow but the temperture was above freezing all day with some sun on an off all
day!

Thank you all for the strudel advice. The filling was fine but the dough was less than perfect. Dough was O.K. but not like my mother use to make. The friend that helped me was gracious and said that if I could make it like my mother on my first try then sturdel making wouldn't be an art.

Guten Abend. Regina: I was very interested in your description of a Gottschee wedding-esp the dinner. My aunt and Uncle Herman and Anna Lackner manged the Gottscheer Club in Queens. Much of their business was wedding dinners. The custom is probably waning now, but some years back wedding and funeral dinners were the backbone of their business.

Re: Strudel in Kansas City, Kansas. There is a bakery called Meema's (??) that makes apple strudel every day and sometimes strawberry. Know the apple kind very well, but never had strawberry. My cousin Mary ANn Rieger Boring has a son who learned strudel making from his grandmother Stephanie Rieger. My aunt, Leni Yonke, now deceased often baked strudel as a holiday treat. She lived in Mahopac, NY.

I've made Kiffel every year since my mother past away. This year it was a disaster. It may be because of my illness and I some how didn't do it properly. Can anyone tell me what is wrong if anything, with the following kiffel recipe.
1/2 lb butter
1 cup sugar
1/2 lb ground walnuts
2 teaspoon baking powder
2 cup flour
2 egg yolks
2 whole eggs
2 teaspoon vanilla or lemon rind.
Sift flour, mix in baking powder sugar, Cut walnuts and butter fine as corn meal. Add beaten eggs and yolks. Mix and knead into on big roll. Chill to harden. Cut walnut size pieces, shape into kiffel. Bake at 325 degrees for 20 minutes.

I didn't bother rolling the kiffel in sugar because they tasted so horrible.

Can anyone help?

My recipe for Nuss Kipfern is a follows:
1 3/4 sticks butter softened to room temperature
2 1/4 cups flour
1 1/4 cup almonds (or walnuts) chopped very fine
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla
small egg

Mix together by hand. Take a teaspoon of dough and roll in hand to form a little log. Place on cookie sheet and bend into crescent shape. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes. Sprinkle vanilla sugar on cookies.

Good luck.

We want to thank all here that have helped us in our endeavor, which we know will be a everlasting piece of Gottschee history.

May all have a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and may 2007 bring us all good health and happiness.

hi everyone, happy holiday season to everyone. i recently located two cousins i didn't know i had. their names are george and dorothy and they are actually my second cousins, our common ancestor is our great grandfather; george and dorothy's moms are first cousins to my mom. george lives 20 mins away from me (what odds!) and dorothy in nyc but i did manage to meet both over the past month. we exchanged family stories, i shared my genealogy with them and they each gave me photos i'd never seen before, some of family members others of places/things connected to my family. i've posted two of the pix: one is a view of morobitz as seen from the road that led to inlauf. the other is a photo of the saege my opa and his brother nessel operated in ploesch. i didn't think any photos of the saege existed so i was very suprised and excited to see it. making it especially interesting for me is that when i was in gottschee in may i visited the site where this structure stood. not a trace of it is left.

so enjoy the two new photos and have a safe and happy holiday season.

Hello, Barb..... I was born in Kukendorf #1 in 1936, but unfortunately Kukendorf no longer exists and the area is no longer accessible, according to relatives who visited the area a year ago. Kukendorf, Tiefental, and Setsch belonged to the Ebental parish, and those three villages still have some houses in them, some of which are occupied. In fact, the church in Ebental has recently been rebuilt, as has the cemetery, although most gravestones in the cemetery have not been replaced on the original graves. My last visit to the area was in 1963 and some improvements have been made since that time. I will try to upload a photo of the village of Kukendorf on the photo page for you.

william:
ridy, it's one of the words used to describe the cause of death of my great, great, great grandmother. the exact wording in the death register is: 'in seligreicher erschuetterung' and is dated 1843. seligreich aside, the erschuetterung could imply a seizure; adding seligreich would seem to still imply a seizure but add a religious, subjective description to the event. a catholic priest, after all, wrote the entry and this woman (from what i've gathered from the family books and other registry entries) was not very well thought of by the local clergy.
- 69.204.165.47 - Tuesday, January 09, 2007 at 13:20:35 (UTC)
Ridy:
no, erschuetterung does not imply a seizure – it is a very flowery way of saying that her death was deeply shocking as in ‘to the depth of my soul’ or ‘to the depth of my being’….
Don’t forget, flowery language was all the rage in that era and covered a multitude of sins! She might well have suffered a seizure, either natural or self inflicted, but that’s not how a seizure is described…. A seizure is ‘ein Anfall’

ridy, that is very interesting; the definition in my random house german-english dictionary made me think seizure - even my mom and dad thought it could be seizure - but what you say is very valid; in fact, my dad did say something along the lines of what you said (except for the commnet about flowery language). so are you saying that 'in seligreicher erschuetterung' means, to use your words, 'her death was deeply shocking as in ‘to the depth of my soul’ or ‘to the depth of my being’' and doesn't suggest a medical reason? the plot thickens...it seems my ancestors are just chock full of mysterious and suspicious inflictions, associations and affairs. pls send me your email address so i can send along some additional material that may provide further hints at what 'in seligreicher erschuetterung' could possibly imply in this case.

Could someone answer this question for me - what is the origin or significance of the "Haus" name versus the family name. Does the haus name represent orginal ownership when the house was built while the family name is the name of the last person to own the house?? Thank you.
- 67.101.159.193 - Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at 07:38:14 (UTC)
Helmuth:
Elaine, I'm pretty sure that the haus name is the name of the family that built the house, in other words the original owner/builder. My father grew up in a house in Unter Buchberg built by Loebaisch, so our family was known as "Loebaisch Kump".

A bit late William but I would very much like to see the fairy tale traslation. My email address is snancy@centurytel.net Hello to everyone. It's been awhile. We're thinking of our neighbors to our south who are getting such awful weather. My sister has found a book which appears to have belonged to my father. The grey cover simply says Gottschee. It appears to have been published in 1962. I believe the author is Herbert Otterstadt. Further in, it says, "Gottschee-Verlorene Heimat deutscher Waldbauern." It contains some beautiful photos and some very good maps. Does this ring a bell with anyone? I am just thrilled to have found it among my dads belongings. I'm very much looking forward to having it translated.

Nancy - regarding the Stalzer photos. Yes, I have looked at them and am curious myself. Please give me the name of your father again. I will send copies of the pictures to my Stalzer relatives in the New York area. Lets hope for a connection.

Regarding the book you found by Otterstadt on Gottschee. I have a copy and I think it is one of the best. I LOVE IT.

Question to one and all: Any reason why the above book could not be copied and made available for others? How would one go about it? THANKS.

Hello Trix and glad to see you back on the PZ. My father was Carl Petschauer. He was the son of Ferdinand (Fred) Petschauer and Johanna Tscherne. Jim and Barry have always told me that you and I are connected somehow but I just haven't been able to put it together. I've just loaned my new treasure (the Otterstadt book) to my mother to look at. She doesn't recall ever seeing it before. Ridy tells me that Burkhardt Otterstadt (the son) now owns the images in the book and can be contacted at...Otterstadt@aol.com I understand he's very generous in letting others use the images.

David Peter Schutte:
My father was Peter Schutte, the son of Peter and Rosalinde Schutte at Bresowitz #3 in Gottschee. He had a brother Geroge, a sister Mary and a sister Mamie. He moved to Ridgewood, L.I. in 1920 to live with his uncle George and aunt Sophie Schutte, then moved to San Francisco, CA and finally moved to Dallas, TX, where he died in January, 1981, at age 80. I have a picture of him with Peter Saletl, Johann Sterbenz, Joseph Maurin and George Schutte (not related), taken in Unterdeutschau or Bresowitz circa 1920. I am searching for any information about Gerti Prelz of Bresowitz #15 circa 1922.

David Peter, saw your posting. I have some information on the Schutte family with names and dates from the GHGA marriage records as well as other sources. For your aunts and uncles, I have Maria Josefa, Frieda, Georg, and Emil. I believe some were born in the US while others were born in Bresowitz. Your grandfather is listed as being in the US from 1892-1902 and he married Rosalia Brinskelle in Brooklyn in 1896. Would be happy to share what I have with you. My email address is DocH301454@aol.com.

Nothing yet on Gertrud Prelz/Prelc from #15. I will look further online. Gerti is not listed under Prelz in the 1941 Resettlement records.

Your grandfather was traveling with a Francisca Prelz of Bresowitz on his 1905 ship manifest.

Jim....as always, thank you very much for your help. Please let me know from where Rosalia Brinskelle comes from. As you know, my grandmother, Joahnna Tscherne, listed an aunt on her immigration record at Ellis Island (the first time she came.) Nancy, I have already benefitted greatly from Jim's expertise and his energetic pursuit of the truth about the past. We are both trying to learn more about Rosalia Brinskelle, working backward from her marriage to Georg Schutte at All Saints' Church in Brooklyn before 1900. I trust that Jim will pass along any information that might link to your aunt, but I will also make a note of your interest in the project. Based upon all that I have learned about Gottscheers this past week, I don't think a link is such a longshot. Nancy, thanks again for the invaluable introduction to the Plauderzimmer!

I do not know of a Kansas City connection in my family, but we do come close. My father's uncle George lived in St. Louis toward the end of his life (1950s) with his wife Tante Sofie. He was a glue chemist from the old school (essentially self-trained, I believe.) I have driven past the Schutte Lumber Co. over in Olathe on my many trips from Dallas to Minneapolis, and I still have one of their 'gimme' caps as a prized possession. I would not rule out any connection at this point, and I will certainly post any finding that suggests one. Gregg, thank you for your interest; I will continue to investigate a possible KC connection and I welcome any help!

Nancy, I believe (pretty certain but not 100%) that Rosalia Brinskelle was from Rodine in the Tschernembl parish. Her parents were from Rossbuchl and Untersteinwand. She married David's grandfather in Brooklyn, went back to Bresowitz, and passed away in Graz after the Second World War. They had children in both Brooklyn and Bresowitz.

hi all, hope everyone is well. perhaps someone can help me out with something. i once read somewhere that 'illegitimate' (out-of-wedlock) births were recorded in a different baptismal/birth registry from 'legitimate' (in-wedlock) births. in my numerous journeys through the gottschee-region birth registries i've seen both legit/illegit in the same registry so i'm not sure how true this statement is. can anyone provide some info on this? if they were recorded in different registers how does one indentify these registries - ie, where do i find them? i have a feeling the answer will be something like 'it depends on the priest'. fyi, i'm trying to track down the birth of an ancestor who was born out of wedlock; the birth took place around 1866 and the father of the child, as best i can tell, never stepped forward and married the mother thus the child was never 'legitimized '(as the saying in latin goes 'per subsequens matrimonium legitimatus'). thx!

I have a question about the Resettlement records. I have run across this before but am noticing it again as I go through the new CD. ==== There are instances where the parent name is listed with only the mother. Possibilities include that the children were illegitimate, they were legitimate and the father is dead, or ????? . Does anyone have any ideas? I used to think that they were all illegitimate but am not so sure at this time.

David, I was also amazed when I discovered my Gottscheer heritage. No one in my mothers generation was aware of it. It was history lost when my Gottscheer great-grandparents died. My grandmother was born in the US, so I don't think she was even aware of it.
- 207.200.116.68 - Monday, January 29, 2007 at 05:14:28 (UTC)
David Peter Schutte:
Marilu, my father's generation seems to have happily 'scattered' when they arrived in this country. They corresponded, but spent none of their time keeping track of their relatives' movements. Understandably, then, I think, I was quite surprised to find other Gottscheers' descendants knowing more about my family's movements than I did. Again, thanks to all for sharing!

William...thank you for sending the fairytale. It's good to hear from you again. I'll get in touch later in the week. Regarding the illegitimate births...I have always found them among the legitimate births for the two parishes Ive studied (Tschermoschnitz and Stockendorf.) - 209.240.245.90 - Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at 18:23:12 (UTC)
David Peter Schutte:
Hi Trix/Sophia! My hunch is that I am NOT related to Alfred Schutte, but I know of his family. My father lived in Bresowitz #3 in 1920, which was across the street from Bresowitz #1. I believe the resident of my father's generation residing in Bresowitz #1 about 1920 was named Georg Schutte, and this might be one of Alfred's ancestors. I know that that Georg Schutte came to New York at some time, but I don't know much else about him. My father told me once that the other Schutte family living in Bresowitz was unrelated to his. I'll e-mail this comment to Alfred. Thanks, Trix!

greetings everyone. eureka! that elusive birth entry shed its shroud and the 'missing link' has been closed. interestingly, the entry was in front of me all the time: i had been skipping over it because it was in paragraph-form (it explained who the father was and per subsequens matrimonium etc.) and was written much smaller print, which meant carefully examination, tracing the projection of the microfilm onto paper to see/'write-out' what the letters were... it took about two days of careful looking but then eureka! the lightbuld went off and there it was. another mystery solved.

Gregg Lickteig:
Hi Jim,
I didn't realize how many mothers were listed rather than fathers in the resettlement records before putting it into Excel. I have drawn the same conclusion as yours I believe. That is, either they were illegitimate or the father had died. But look at the older men and women in the records; they still list a father even though it's very doubtful the father was still living. It's hard to tell which is the case in each entry without further research from other sources.

- 70.252.123.132 - Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at 04:13:12 (UTC)
Gregg Lickteig:
Jim, also a very small amount of the resettlement records do list the fathers full name if the child was illegitimate. Not sure about this either, but I think perhaps the child was later legitimized through marriage and maybe this is why the fathers full name is listed. The child of course took on the mothers surname. I can't confirm if the parents in these cases married each time though without further research. Did I confuse you more? Hope this helps a bit anyway.

Greetings from Minnesota. It is very, very cold here. At present we have -17F going down to -26F. I don't mind telling you I am ready for spring.

It has been so very quiet in the Plauderzimmer and I really miss our sharing. I hope it picks up soon.

Thanks to Erik Kirsch, President of the Peter Kosler Gottscheer Verein I learned yesterday, that on Sept.16 2007, at 10 a.m.,in the beautiful new church in the village of Rieg, Gottschee a high mass will be held in celebration of 600 years since the first mention of a priest in said village.

Father Joze Milcimovic, the priest currently serving the community, is extending a warm invitation to all Gottscheers to attend the celebration.
He would be specifically honored to co-celebrate the mass with a Gottscheer priest. THAT, in my humble opinion, would be awesome.

So, if any of you are planning a trip to the former Gottschee in September, or you may have a relative who is a priest, keep this in mind and pass the word. I guarantee you would enjoy it very much. Besides, September is a great time to visit Slovenia.

I am recovering nicely from my recent knee replacement surgery and am returning to doing more and more office work. Look forward to chatting with you.

Stay well and stay warm.

I am looking for a volunteer who understands Gottscheabarisch (the dialect) who can listen to stories of Gottschee on a cassette, transcribe them and hopefully translate them into English. I would think this could be excellent materials to share with our Gottscheer community.

THANK YOU.

Hilde Kobetitsch:
Hello Jim

Nice to hear from you again on the Plauderzimmer. We had several churches here in Cleveland that Gottscheers were members of.

Holy Trinity on Woodland Avenue, which is now closed.
Saint Peters Church on Saint Clair Avenue. There was also a Saint Francis Church on Superior and also Saint Vitas, a Slovenian church. I will look into some records and see what Platt Avenue had. I myself do not think there was a church on that street, perhaps I am wrong. I will investigate and get back to you.

Have a wonderful Sunday

Jim Heimann:
Hilde, thank you for the reply. From other information, I am betting on Holy Trinity for the Platt Avenue area but I am not sure.

Do you know the status of Helen Petsche? I tried to call her but there was no answer. I am working with a relative from California on Helen's mother's side.

Lightly snowing in NJ. Should be a mucky mesh by the morning but without a large accumulation.

Still going to the Poconos on the weekend. Very quiet and relaxing. We have a computer cable hook up so I am able to surf the sites for "wayward" Gottscheers. Trix keeps an eye out for postings and I help whenever I can.

For those of you who are members, remember to extol the virtues of joining the GHGA. Without that organizations, so many people would be without links to their Gottscheer heritage.

Hello from western Pennsylvania. I just found your site this week, and I will probably be able to fill in some information about our side of the extended Gottschee family. I am glad I found this site, and hope to get to know more Gottscheers!

Good morning!

Jim, Holy Trinity Church fronts on Woodland Avenue, and Platt Avenue is immediately behind (north of) it, so I'm sure this is the church you're looking for. As Hilde mentioned, it is regretably now closed. The Gottscheer Heimatchor sang many Masses and recorded several Christmas songs there; I believe it had the best acoustics of any church its size that I've ever been in.

Herbert, thank you for the information. I tried to locate Holy Trinity on the diocese's online site but only came up with one that was too far away. The fact that the church is closed would explain that.

Hello Jim

I spoke with Helen's niece and also with Elmer Mekker, Elmer took Helen to brunch on many occasions. Helen is in rehab and is doing somewhat better. She was unable to speak at one point. I will get the address of the rehab for you and send it to your e-mail address tomorrow. Thank you for asking and your kindness. Helen has been a great help to many of the Clevelander; and she took many of her hours to find out information for them. We will miss her on Sunday at our first monthly dinner of the year.

I will get back to you tomorrow evening in regards to the address.

Everyone have a good week.

Jim, there is something I forgot to tell you, perhaps you could check with the Saint John's Catherdral in regards to records of past members of Holy Trinity and marriage and birth records. I know when I needed to get information and records from my old high school for Notre Dame, I was told by the Diocese of where to inquire about these records. Perhaps you could do the same, or I will make a call to Saint-John's Cathedral and ask for you. I will also get back to you on this.

I am back again. I had a call from a lady who is very active with the Donauschwaben here in Cleveland. I also spoke with many people at the Home and Gardern show at the beginning of February, since the Stadtverband of Cleveland had a booth and My radio partner and I took our 4 hours to be there and answer questions in regards to the Gottscheer Club and also the Donauschwaben Club. The general public was very interested in both of these clubs. the questions that many asked was in reards to the geneology of their ancestry. I of course told them about Dr. Nick and her group who do research about the Gottscheers. My question is this, does anyone know where the Donauschwaben could go for their research? I told them that the Mormon organization has many records of many countries. But, I was not so sure that I was correct. The Donauschwaben of Cleveland apparently are also interested in getting a Geneology started. If anyone out there knows of a group that would do this, please let me know. My e-mail address is hbrunhilde@aol.com

Thanking you in advance for your help in this matter.

hi all... not sure how that last msg got on there. it's cold here in upstate ny. at the moment it's -1* fahrenheit and the windchill is -10* fahrenheit. and it's march 7th!

a question for the group: were/are the names martin and mathias used interchangeably? i'm looking at birth records from the 1760s-1790s and it seems they are: in one entry i see the father's name as mathias, then a bit later in the taufbuch i find a reference to the same couple with a new child but in this second entry the father is listed as martin. it's perplexing. any clues?

Hello and an early entry this evening. Friday marked my one year anniversary of not smoking! I've now made up my mind to lose the 40 pounds (yes...forty!) that I've put on since then. This was also opening weekend for our local community theater production. My husband thinks himself a thespian and he is pretty good in the winter comedy. Beautiful weather here this past weekend. If this keeps up, the snow should be gone in another week. Take care all.

just wanted to say hello to everyone out there. We had an earthquake in Cleveland at 7:30 p.m. Actually it was outside of Cleveland in Portage County, Kent, Streetsboro, Macedonia, Brecksville, Chagrin Falls and also Twinsburg. It registered 3.6. The noise was just to scary, and the floor actually moved. I thought that a truck hit the house.

As long as everyone is ok. That is important. Our temp will be in the 70's tomorrow, and then winter returns. Oh what fun.

Hope everyone has a good week. Hello from all of us in Cleveland.

Indeed you are right Frank...we're very glad that's all resolved, especially my son Tom who is a bigger fan than I am, if you can believe that. From my office downtown, I have an excellent view of the existing arena and the new site. I'll send or post some pictures when they break ground. The evening got even better when the Penguins defeated the Sabres.

Helmuth, Congratulations on your Penguins staying in Pittsburgh. As for KC we now have a new arena opening in the fall with absolutely no sports team of any kind occupying it. What a shame. This kind of luck seems to be nothing new for us. Have a great weekend.

Scott, Welcome to KC this weekend. If you get a chance check out our revitalizing in downtown...there is so much going on. The new "soon to be unoccupied" Sprint arena is going up fast and is really magnificant to see.

Gregg, this is ironic but, the word is the Nashville Predators are looking to relocate, possibly to your new KC arena. That would also be a shame to me since we are fans of Nashville, too (we have a summer farm in TN). Still, I think KC deserves a team and the team in turn deserves a loyal following.

Does anyone know if the headstones in the cemetery in Gottschee Parish have been photographed and available online? Maria and her Husband-to-be John Fitz emigrated to the US in 1889.

Bruce...some Gottscheer cemetery headstones remain as published in "Cemeteries and Tombstones of the Gottscheer Germans." I think the regional museum has a few headstones too. I had a look in my book and see no Fitz tombstones remaining in the county of Gottschee however, the parish records still exsist in both the original books (in the archives) and on microfilm available at the LDS Family Research Library. Hope this helps.

hello === genealogists out there --- can anyone tell me how to find the naturalization papers? I have gone on several online sites and still can't figure out who I should contact. Is anyone familiar with this type of sleuthing?

Jim, the naturalization records that I have found have been on microfilm at the LDS library. I haven't tried to find any thru the court system.

I am a naturalized citizen and I think we came through the Federal Court system in Minnesota.
- 209.240.245.139 - Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at 04:00:32 (UTC)
Sheila K.:
Jim: It depends on the time frame. Naturalizations prior to 1906 were generally handled in the local (county) court system; ie: contact the Clerk of the Courts in the county where the naturalization most likely took place. After 1906 up until ????, naturalizations still took place in the local courts but copies were filed with the federal govt. At some point the naturalization process was turned over completely to the federal courts. Never having gone the federal govt. route I'm not sure of the procedure. I think the NARA (National Archives) website may have that info. I have always dealt with the local courts, even for records into the 1920s, or checked the LDS catalog to see if anything has been filmed for the particular jurisdiction in which I was interested. As an aside, my grandfather filed his Declaration of Intent in 1883 in Iowa and completed the process some years later in Illiois. Also women were not naturalized separately from their spouses until 1920 when women's suffrage was recognized.
- 12.73.242.198 - Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at 11:03:04 (UTC)
Sheila K.:
Just to clarify, I think it was in September 1906 that the federal court system assumed jurisdiction for naturalizations even though they still took place in the local courts, and copies of filings should be available in both places up to an indeterminate date.

thank you for your comments. I called NARA in NY. I had previously located an index for naturalizations in NY using rootsweb.com. The gentleman from NARA said I could simply write the NYC office a request with copies of the information and $10 per request. That sounds simple enough.
- 64.12.116.65 - Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at 18:32:47 (UTC)
Nancy:
Might you have a national phone number? I find the NARA website very difficult to navigate. The only naturalization record I'm aware of my family having is my great uncle Johann Petschauer born 1874...from Iowa. I've never actually seen this document with my own eyes. I have several alien registrations circa 1918.

Now I'm really going to confuse someone...the alien registrations are from 1918. I've also recently come accross several sites which have the WWI draft registration records. I've found my grandfathers and several of his brothers....pretty neat as they give a physical (albeit brief) description. I've been reading about some military records now being available from the Austria-Hungary era. I hope to have some success. Have a great weekend everyone.

Greetings to all. Our local sunday paper (St Paul) ran a story on eastern Europe tourism and included Slovenia and Croatia...still a bargain compared to the rest of Europe even after moving from Tolars to Euros. While we are taking the time to share our thoughts ith each other here is another question to which I would appreciate some feedback.

The Gottscheers had, and continue to have, a wonderful Easter tradition of preparing special food for this special holiday. I clearly remember watching my mother lovingly preparing the food and istening as she explained the meanings of this proud tradition. I am grateful for her teachings and happy to say that it has continued at our home to this day and our children, extended family members, neighbors and grand children have developed the same longing for this special food just like I have had all my life.

Our Easter food includes ham, sausages, boiled eggs, green onions, fresh horseradish stick, a Pabauitze (baked cake) and the famous Ville or Easter dressing.

I also remember several of the meanings of the above food as it connects the the Last Supper. The eggs represented the rocks that were thrown at Jesus; the green onions the nails that were used on the cross; the horseradish the vile they gave him to drink; the dressing the last supper.

Then on Easter Saturday the food was placed in a basket, covered with a beautiful clothes and taken to church to be blessed. What a site to see the many different baskets of the foot of the altar and what a site to see the mothers, grandmothers and children walking through the fields to their respective homes carrying the baskets.

We could not taste the Easter food until after mass on Sunday morning. It was very, very hard not to be tempted but the Gottscheers were strict in observing fasting until the early mass and the ringing of the church bells which had been silent since Holy Thursday.

Of course, I believed then and still do (at the age of 71) that this special blessed food tasted so much better because it was blessed than any other time of the year.

Can anyone help in identifying other meanings for the Gottscheer Easter food? I would appreciate it and it is WORTH PRESERVING.

HAPPY EASTER and THANK YOU.

Sophia aka Trix: Somewhere I think I recall having seen you refer to the system of House Names in Gottscheer villages. If this recollection is accurate, I would greatly appreciate any insight you might be willing to share about this system (and I suspect many others out there would, as well.) For example, residences of my family members living in different villages seem to have similar, but distinct 'names'. Also, probably because of my very limited German, most of the names seem unintelligible to me (although I can occasionally see some obvious connections to family surnames.) Thank you for any help you might be able to offer!

Predicted snow tonight!!!!!! During the tour of Gottschee in 2005, Mr Hans Ivan Jaklitsch gave me an old map which had the house "names" and family names of Mitterdorf near Tschermoschnitz...this being from the time of resettlement. I had no idea a system had been in place to give a house a name...very interesting.

Ridy Hoegler Skyrme:
Regarding house names – Martha Hutter, in her publication “Gottscheerisch an introduction to the language of the Gottschee Germans” attempts to explain house names on Page 25, and comes as close as anything I’ve seen. It generally referred to the original owner, his name, occupation, hobby, or the location of the house, etc., etc. without real rhyme, reason or rule. When I was a child I found it endlessly confusing to hear people in our village referred to by their house names, their surnames, their occupation, their Christian names and their nicknames. Everybody also had at least one nickname, of course. My grandmother told me to call anyone noticeably older than I was either Tante or Onkel, depending on their gender, of course, unless circumstances made it necessary to be very formal, in which case you called them Herr or Frau or whatever. To this day, (I am now 71 years old) I still call certain Gottscheer ladies “Tante” although they are not related to me – but it’s a form of endearment and a harmless habit. Going by our house name in Gottschee, the original occupants of our house must have been foxes!

Ridy and Nancy:
Thank you both very much!
I haven't seen the Martha Hutter book, but I'll watch for it.
The housenames in the Bresowitz/Unterdeutschau area generally seem to end with the sounds 'aisch' or 'einsch'. Do these convey any German meaning to either of you, or could these be simply germanization of some underlying Slavic word or meaning?
Ridy, thank you for your recollection concerning Tante and Onkel -- this explains something I noticed happening in my family that never made much sense to me.

- 68.94.179.2 - Friday, April 13, 2007 at 00:00:25 (UTC)
Ridy:
Those endings 'aisch' and 'einsch' are basically just Gottscheer possessive endings.....as in 'belonging to' e.g., 'Schmidasch' = belonging to Schmid... nothing, as far as I know, to do with any Slavic words. Don't forget that Gottscheerisch is not a language -- it is a Middle High German dialect, and spelling is as you wish. Most definitely not Slavic. There are variations in the different regions of Gottschee because we had distinct dialects within our Gottscheer dialect, and some of us old-timers can still identify where Gottscheers come from just from the way they speak...quite distinct, one from the other, and cause of much merriment at mixed gatherings!
You can get Martha's book from her directly...let me know if you want her e-mail address. contact me at ridy@sympatico.ca

Hi Ridy, good to hear from you again. I am really enjoying this conversation. And I'm fascinated too by the varying dialect of Gottscheers themselves. This must have really confused a non Gottscheer German, who if I understand correct had hard enough time as it was to understand a Gottscheer.

Gregg Lickteig:
My Tramposch and Loschke grandparents had several very large paintings that are now long gone, but I have a question regarding the story behind them. Through relatives I have been told the was a painter/artist who did paintings for the Counts or whoever was in charge of Gottschee (was this the Auerspurgs?) I get confused on who was who but does anyone know of such a painter who perhaps was famous or otherwise did paintings specifically for the "rulers"? These were paintings of the orchards in one of the villages.
- 70.252.120.13 - Friday, April 13, 2007 at 01:18:28 (UTC)
Ridy:
Gregg: Does the name Michael Ruppe ring a bell? He was a well-known Gottscheer painter, though not the only one, and his painting of the City of Gottschee is on the cover of my book. Arnold Rom's mother (my co-author) had some of his works. The Counts von Auersberg, I think, would most certainly have had some of his paintings. Any chance of finding the paintings your grandparents had?
- 64.229.231.148 - Friday, April 13, 2007 at 01:49:35 (UTC)
Gregg Lickteig:
I never heard a name, unfortunately. My grandmother Alvina Loschke had told this story to my cousin. I don't know how she got a hold of them, but the story went that the Auerspurgs had requested for this artist to paint them. Another cousin that wound up with them I believe sold them probably at a pawn shop when she was into some hard times. I don't think she had a clue as to what she had, and likely the pawn shop had even less of a clue. Alvina had the paintings in expensive frames. I think they were probably sold more for the frame value than the paintings themselves. I think there were three of them, very large. At least one was the vineyards. They would have been sold somewhere in Kansas City, KS in the late 80's or very early 90's. I don't think my cousin will talk. Is there a way to find out if Michael Ruppe did any vineyard paintings for the Auerspurgs?

Gregg Lickteig:
Ridy, I do have one or two old pictures taken in my grandparents home that have glimpses of some of these paintings in the background. With technology I may be able to blow them up, and at least get a better view. This is a long shot but I can try if you would like.

David Peter Schutte:
Thank you Ridy -- your comments on Hausnahmen help!
Gregg, I think there are some Ruppe paintings displayed online -- it should at least be possible to compare Ruppe's style to the style in your family's paintings.

- 144.162.61.7 - Friday, April 13, 2007 at 17:36:10 (UTC)
Gregg Lickteig:
Thanks David. I see the painting of the city of Gottschee on Arnold Rom's website, and another Ruppe painting is shown on an online auction house website. Both are strikingly similar in style to those paintings I remember. Wow! Thanks to both David and Ridy on the info. I believe with some confidence I now know who the artist was. Grandpa Tramposch imigrated to KC in 1904 and Grandma Alvina was born in KCMO in 1898, so I'm wondering how old these paintings were. They had to have been brought over from Gottschee, either by grandpa parents in 1904 or by Alvina's parents in the latter 1800's.

I may be a day late (and a dollar short) but...thanks for explaining the Onkel/Tante "system." When I started researching my fathers family, I couldn't understand why he refered to some older first cousins as Onkel...now I know it was a sign of respect and endearment. How are your new grandbabies?

Trix aka Sophia:
Greeting from Minnesota. It is a nippy day here. Temp around 50 with a strong north wind. Actually a pretty good day to be indoors and enjoying a nice wood fire.

A short time ago I received an e-mail from a colleague in NY alerting me to e-Bay and particularly a post card that was for sale. It shows a photo of Rann in 1941 with the additional language of Neu Gottschee (new Gottschee). I had never heard that term Neu Gottschee and am assuming it was so called because the Gottscheers resettled to this area in the fall and winter of 1941. I bid on the card and it sold for around $50.00 - pretty steep price for a post card. I will try to post a copy of the post card on the New Plauderzimmer 2.

Has anyone reading this message ever heard of Neu Gottschee? If you have, what is this all about?

Have a GREAT weekend.

We woke up to about 2 inches snow on the ground this morning. A very wet heavy snow, so the branches on the bushes are almost touching the ground. But the sun is shining so it should be melted before long. Higher elebations got a lot more than we did.

Jeanne, I've resized them. If you can resize the pictures to be approximately 600 pixels on the longest side, that would be idea. If you have a digital camera, the software that comes with it should be able to do this. If not, email to me in advance and I'll resize them for you.

Trix aka Sophia:

Dear Friends. Remember when I told you that I was bidding on a post card being sold on e-Bay Deutschland. The post card read Rann, Untersteiermark a.d. Save - (Neu Gottschee). I was the lucky bidder and it arrived today from the seller in Germany. She purchased it in a lot of postcards but knew nothing about Gottschee.

The post card is in excellent condition and never used. On the back of the postcard appears the following:

Fotograf (photographer) Josef Eppich Wien 15 Dreihausgasse 36
and the following number 10/1182

Now, of course, I am curious as to the photographer and whether or not he may be a Gottscheer.

Can anyone shed any light on this very interesting find? Would appreciate it.

Sophia

Gregg Lickteig:
Trix, the number sequence 10/1182 is the same style sequence used in part of the resettlement records. There is an explanation of what these numbers mean in a Word file that accompanies the database version of the resettlement records published by GHGA. Not sure if this number could be from another resettlement list from somewhere else in Europe during the same time period, but that number specifically is not in the resettlement records of Gottschee. I don't know the language, but is Dreihausgasse a physical place or is it like a tavern or business name?
- 70.246.78.194 - Saturday, May 26, 2007 at 04:02:52 (UTC)
Sheila K.:
I think 10/1182 is the postal code. Dreihausgasse 36 is located in the Waehring district of Vienna and the last four digits (1182) match that location. As for the "10" I'm thinking that was probably the "municipal district" number at that time. Waehring is now in municipal district 18.
- 12.73.242.222 - Saturday, May 26, 2007 at 13:10:21 (UTC)
Sheila K.:
Upon searching further, my conclusions about the number "10" appear to be wrong. Don't have a clue.

Sheila, your explanation makes much more sense than what I was seeing.
- 70.246.78.194 - Saturday, May 26, 2007 at 18:05:45 (UTC)
Ridy:
Looks an awful lot like a catalogue number to me..... definitely not a postal code - and no relation to the resettlement records, I would think.

Nancy:
Wein being Vienna, I don't think the numbers have much to do with the resettlement records either. I have a cousin who currently lives in Vienna and will ask her what she thinks. Speaking of the resettlement records, I have the book and...can anyone explain the three sets of numbers to me? I would be most grateful.
