Nancy:
Took some advice and called a Gottscheer in New York whom I've never met. Turns out he attended todays picnic and is planning on attending the Treffen over Labor Day...now I just have to go! Have a great weekend.

Thank you.

That would be a no from me Trix. Are you still interested in wedding and funeral customs? I'm interested also. The only thing I have to contribute is...my great aunt, Maria Tscherne, died in Lachina in (1917 or 18) in her 40s from an accident according to the parish death record and family book record. Barry was nice enough to translate for me and it seems that the services were held in the evening to allow for her neighbors to finish their work in the fields before attending the funeral......very practical.

Guten ABend. Hello from soggy KCMO. Terrible storms for several days and more coming. Flash flooding, etc. Our yard is like a swamp. Hoping for a coupld of dry days so my garden isn't washed away. Hope all are well. Auf wiedersehen. Bleib gesund.

Margaret Jonke:
Interested in the funeral customs mentioned last week. Gottscheers were big on funeral dinners. My aunt and uncle Herman and Anna Lackner who managed the Gottshceer Club in Brookly, or Queens, had a lot of business with funeral dinners. Weddings too.
Our family still does the dinner thing - neighbors bringing food etc.

Gregg Lickteig:
Trix,
Here are the one's I have. Not 100% sure but believe these are right based on previous internet research and other sources:
Teharje = Tuchern
Slovenske Konjice = Windisch-Gonobitz or maybe just Gonobitz
Bistrica at Sotla = Königberg am Sattelbach per notes I have from Helmut Tramposch or Sankt Peter bei K. according to information I previously obtained from the internet
Dekmanca = Deckmannsdorf
Slovenj Gradec = Windischgraz or Windischgrätz
Čemšenik = Tschemschenigghof

Welcome Tom. Yes, I believe you have uncovered your Gottscheer roots. CONGRATULATIONS and happy journey.
I was born near Tschermoschnitz in 1936 and migrated to Minnesota, along with my parents after the war in 1952. I am very interested in learning more out you and your family. Any further information on Josef Kump - like village, parents name etc. Feel free to write to me at wyants@mlecmn.net.

Hello all. Can anyone tell me when the houses were renumbered in Mitterdorf near Tschermoschnitz? I am curious as during the 2005 trip, #10 (my grandfathers) looked relatively new... (I saw a date of 1940ish on the chimney) while houses around it appeared more of the period. My grandfather left #10 around the turn of the 20th century.

I'll put this up for discussion too. My great aunt, Veronika Tscherne, left Lachina in 1918 or 1919 and settled in Unterholz #3, Holshausen, Wels, Austria. I'm most interested in researching her family further. Anyone know if the LDS Family History Centers have records from this area? OR...an address or website to contact? Appreciate the help.

Thank you Marilu. No hits when I searched Unterholz but did have luck with Holzhausen. I believe that some church (Kirche?) and court records are included from 1819 to 0940 so I'm saying a prayer that I'll find something. Thanks again.

Welcome to both of you. There are several people who can help with your search. I'll forward both of your email addresses to them. Tom...I had a quick look at the Ellis Island site and found a Josef Kump, born in 1889, who arrived on Oct 3, 1907, traveling to Illinois. There were a dozen other Josef Kumps as well so further information is needed. Do you know the name of Josef's parents?

Nancy:
Tom...I've found Josef's parents in the marriage records for Tschermoschnitz. Johann Kump of Plesch #7 married Maria Brinskelle of Plesch #9 on the 10th of August 1885. It list Maria's parents as Franz Brinskelle and Ursula Moschner. More in next window.
- 69.179.64.40 - Wednesday, July 04, 2007 at 21:25:07 (UTC)
Nancy:
I don't know why, perhaps Johann was raised by someone other than his birth parents but it list his parents as Michael Schmuck and Agnes Schmuck. Further. Franz Brinskelle and Ursula Moschner were married Feb 10, 1858. The records list Franz Brinskelle of Plesch #9 the son of Mathias Brinskelle and Agnes Gerger. More next window.
- 69.179.64.40 - Wednesday, July 04, 2007 at 21:29:51 (UTC)
Nancy:
The records further list Ursula Moschner of Aschelitz #5 the daughter of Josef Moschner and Margaret Mausser. I don't find any Micael Schmuck married to an Agnes Schmuck in the records for Tschermoschnitz. This is just the tip of the iceberg. You will be contacted my people better suited to help you in your search. Happy hunting!

regarding this posting. In checking my Gottscheer Villages publication I do find the name Parthe in Masern. There is a lady by the name of Elfriede Parthe who is vice chair of the Gottscheer Relief Assn. in NY. I am thinking she might be of help. You could reach her by calling the Gottscheer club house at 1-718-366-3030 or 1-718-821-0778.
Regarding your postings about Plesch by Tschermoschnitz. (It is not in Tschermoschnitz but rather by). Tschermoschnitz is a village and so is Plesch. I am pleased to tell you that I know the village personally having visited it numerous times since 1984. Further, I was born right
up the hill from Plesch - in the village of Oberblaschewitz or Peikeis.
According to the Gottscheer Villages book Haus No. 7 was owned by an Andreas Kump (no doubt related to you) and the house name was GREATSCHN. Every house in Gottschee was know by the house name rather then the last naqme of the owner.
I have cousins both in the USA and Germany who were born in Plesch. They may even know the Kumps. I will try to find out. There is only 1 old photo of Plesch that I know of and I will try to find it for you.
Enjoy your journey of discovering your Gottscheer ancestors.

Sharon Eisenzopf:
It really hits home when I know that I crossed that bridge everytime I went to Minnieapolis I hope Governments around the world takes notice and start putting our safety serious. Everytime I cross the bridge that separates my town from International Falls, I always have a fear that with it and that bridge is in worst shape then the one in Minnieapolis. Our bridge probably sits about 100 feet before the power dam. If it every breaks I would say that it would take out the dam also.
Check it out using the Google Earth program. I used that program ( the same one CNN uses) to look at Gottschee. It was really interesting to see. I even looked at my house with it. I can make out our dog kennel but it kinda looks like I have a swimming pool in the back yard because we use a blue tarp to cover the kennel in the summer. My Mom and I laughed over it.

Hi Wendy Petschauer Walters. Thank you for your response. You are right, we are very, very lucky only to have lost a small number. It is a miracle.
I like your name too. No doubt a Gottscheer connection with Nancy Thurber? I lived in St. Paul in the 1950's and heard the Petschauer names many times.

Hope to hear form you.

Hello Cousin Wendy! Welcome to the PZ. I agree with both you and Trix...it is a miracle that more lives weren't lost as it was rush hour. I know the entire area thanks the world for all thoughts and prayers. Trix, Wendy and her father, Tom Petschauer, are new to the GHGA. I forwarded an email to you that contained some information on Tom's grandfather (my grandfather's brother) Johann Petschauer. Perhaps you remember hearing about him...he lived to the age of 100 (1974)...and just the day before I was to interview him for my highschool history class newspaper. I often think that had the interview taken place, I would have learned of Gottschee long before 2004.

Research help!
Anybody have access to the microfilms that might answer this if you can help I would be very grateful. Josef Tramposch (b. Buchel) marr Margaretha Vogrin (b. Nesseltal) 3 Feb 1768 in Nesseltal parish. Any records (family books etc) that might show if they had children born in Nesseltal 32 in the 1770-1790's? I have listings of Josef Tramposch & Margaretha (last name NA) with children here but need confirm it is Margaretha Vogrin. Also in much need to know if one child of Josef & Margaretha Vogrin could be Thomas Tramposch who married Maria Kump & they had son Johann Tramposch (b. 25 Oct 1792 in Nesseltal 32). Any microfilms that might help if they can be looked at by anyone with access I really would appreciate.
Thanks so much!! Email me at gregglickteig@sbcglobal.net or write back here.

Hello Barb, I think Kukendorf was destroyed but the church in Ebental has been repaired. I have a friend who is also from Kukendorf...Ridy...who now lives in Canada. Sophia Stalzer Wyant:
Greetings from Minnesota Barbara. I am excited to read about your trip to Gottschee. You will love it - I guarantee it.
You have 3 days that you wish to spend there. Kukendorf is located in the western region of the former Gottschee. Nancy is correct Kukendorf was destroyed either during or after the war but there are many other very interesting places to see. I would recommend that you consider hiring a native, Emil Krese who resides in Dolga vas (Grafenfeld) immediately to the south of the City of Gottschee. He has Gottscheer ancestors, knows the area better than anyone and you would truly enjoy not only his company but what to see. The sites should include the Gottscheer Exhibit in the Museum in the city of Gottschee now called Kocevje. Numerous churches and chapels that have been either built new or renovated with the help of financial support from the local residents, including Slovenians and Gottschers particularly in North America. The remaining cemeteries are a must as is eating as Ciril's Jasenc
Gostilna. His mother is a Gottscheerin born in
Langenton - western region. The church and cemetery in Ebental is beautiful as is Annaberg etc etc etc
Feel free to e-mail me for further information on Emil. I am at wyants@mlecmn.net.

Hilde Kobetitsch:
Good evening my Gottscheer friends,
Just wanted to let you know that the Treffen in Kitchener was terrific. They did a wonderful job presenting the Treffen 2007, everything from the arrival until the departure worked like a clock work. New York and Cleveland buses went to the Alpine club for breakfast on Monday, and let me tell you, the ladies did a wonderful job with the breakfast, it was delicious. So another Treffen went off with a success story and now we are looking forward to the Treffen 2008 in Cleveland. We cordially invite you to this Treffen 2008; so let us stay well and we all look foreward in seeing each other again. I certainly was happy to see so many friendly faces, people who have been our friends for so many years. We also made some new friends, which is always nice. Stay well and God bless all of you.
And if anyone from Kitchener is on the plauderzimmer at any time, thanks again for a wonderful time and for the wonderful hospitality to showered on us. God bless all of you and you may sit back and relax and know that you did a terrific job.
So until next year in Cleveland.

I am curious about a a place called Speharje, Slovenia. I know some Kobe's from there who seem to think they are Slovenian rather than Gottscheerisch. I don't know. Many Kobe's are in Gottschee records, and perhaps one moved there. Eventually they left there and came to Kansas City area. But they settled in a Slavic part of town rather than the German Gottsheer part of town that most other Gottscheers immigrated to. Does anybody know if other Gottscheers lived in this village or any info about it (i.e. where is it from Gottschee)? Help would be appreciated.

Welcome home Franz. Hope the whole trip wasn't that bad. Isn't that something that church doors have to be locked nowadays? They do that here where I live too.

Gregg, thank you. In Ebental there was a note posted on the door, the key is available across the street, house #13. I went and knocked on the door, no answer but I could hear someone inside and behind the house behind bushes someone was watching me. Creepy feeling. We visted the cemetary and there were still some headstones of Gottscheers, I think I might have found the grave and headstone of Riddy's ancestors. In Gottschee City we had a similar experience with locals watching us with suspicion. Or was it only my imagination? Entering Slovenia at the border I tried to converse with the agent in German, he answered in English. Funny or what?

A list I have shows Speharje to be in the municipality of Črnomelj. If I have it right this is the Slovenian name for the Gottscheer Tschernembl. So would it be fair to say that Speharje is located in the parish of Tschernembl? Any thoughts?

Gregg: I have most of the micofilms from Tschernembl, and this town is not familiar to me. I can look them over next week and see if it is there. Do you have a particular name and date to look for? Is Kobe the only name you want to know about, and could you give me a time frame.

Part 1
Marilu, I have only sketchy info but hopefully more will come to me soon. Mathias Kobe (b. abt 1870? Speharje). Married Barbara (b. abt 1881 Austria), possibly married in abt 1902. Don't know if marriage was in Austria or in Kansas City area. At least 6 children, all born in KC area. Possibility I may get Mathias' fathers name this weekend but not holding my breath on it. Might also get some of Mathias' siblings names.

Gregg Lickteig:
Part 2
Marilu, Info from Kate Baum says Tschernembl parish was not part of Gottschee, although many Gottscheers lived in some of the villages there, such as Maierle, Strassenberg etc. I have an internet list of abt 8,000 current Slovenian village town and city names, and each one lists the municipality it is in. Speharje (Špeharji) shows to be in Črnomelj municipality, which is Tschernembl. This Kobe family seems to think they are Slovenian and not Gottscheerisch or German. There are many Kobe's and Kobetitsch's from the Tschernembl area. One question is are they all Slovenians or is the Kobe surname of Gottscheer decent?

Gregg Lickteig:
Part 3
The Kobe descendent I spoke with mentioned the Kobe Valley or Kobe Mountains or something like that. She says this Speharje sat up on a hill in this area and overlooked what is now Croatia. As I look on a map I see the Tschernembl area is very close to the current Croatian border, so this makes sense.
Marilu, if you could further research this using what I have written I'd appreciate it. I do not have microfilms for this. I will write more if I find further names etc to assist you. My email is gregglickteig@sbcglobal.net
Thanks!

Franz, I have to comment on the language story. That's funny. What hits me is here in the states you make a business phone call or go to a lot of stores and you hear Spanish! (at least in my part of the country). Have a great weekend.
- 70.246.254.244 - Friday, September 28, 2007 at 23:52:38 (UTC)
Ridy:
Got a chuckle out of your comment on language, Gregg. A month ago, my best friend visited us from Texas. Our friendship goes back to our days at the University of Michigan. As it happened, one of my aunts called me to ask if I’d be attending the Treffen in Kitchener, because she wanted me to meet a relative who would be visiting from Slovenia. We chatted away in Gottscheerisch, much to my friend’s amusement. She said it sounded like a bunch of gibberish to her! But she had also noted that in that one conversation I had also spoken English and High German. No sooner had I hung up the phone, than there was a call from an old mutual friend in Paris, who wanted some information about my grandchildren. I handed the phone to my husband, so that he could give her the information in French, because over the years my French has become quite rusty, as has her English, and so for the next twenty minutes we both listened to my Welsh husband having an animated conversation in French. Later that same day, another old friend called, and I again asked my husband to take it, because I was busy preparing dinner, and he proceeded to chat away in Spanish. The next call came from my friend’s husband in Texas, and her greeting to him was: “Now Bob, the first thing you have to tell me is what language you want to speak so that I know if I should hand the phone to Ray or Ridy, or if maybe you and I could just speak in English for a few minutes.” Oh – and my friend is a native New Yorker of Italian-Russian heritage. It’s a small world, after all!

Franz -
No doubt some of my ancestors, among them Maussers, Lobes, and Hoeglers, are buried in the cemetery in Ebental. However, when I last visited in 1963, the church had been destroyed, with just parts of three walls still standing, the steeple was lying on the ground, and the headstones from the cemetery were either smashed or in a pile at the edge of what used to be the cemetery. My uncle, who was with us and who had lived in Ebental until he came to Canada in the 1920s, was unable to figure out what was supposed to be where because the place had been pretty much destroyed. In the intervening years, the church has been rebuilt, paid for in large part by my relative who just visited from Slovenia (I still have not met him), and the gravestones which had not been smashes to smithereens were set up to give the appearance of a cemetery again, although the location was apparently moved slightly. I’m told they did the best they could with what was left after the rampage. If you took any photos, I’d love to see them.

Greetings from Minnesota Jenny. I hope you had a GREAT trip home. I just received the following information from my colleague and distant cousin from upstate New York. I thought you might enjoy it.
Dear Cousin Trix,
I just checked and Jenny's late husband was related to you through the Brinskelles of Sporeben #7 - Mathias Brinskelle through his son Bartholomäus' daughter, Agnes Brinskelle's marriage to Andreas Schmuck of Ribnig #5 on Feb. 6, 1787 in TZ parish.
For your information Jenny my grandmother was Maria Brinskelle born in Haus No. 7 in Sporeben, Gottschee.
She married Andreas Schober in nearby Stockendorf and
emigrated to Canada after the war. I have visited those villages AND Ribnik numerous times in recent years. I also have some wonderful photos and will happily share them with you.
Now that we are related I would truly enjoy hearing from you. My e-mail address is wyants@mlecmn.net.
Liebe Grüße.

If you have any kind of information about OSTERMANNs/OSTERMANs in Niedergottscheerland (Rieg, Hintenberg, Proese, Unterwetzenbac,...) and in the neighbouring parishes of Banja Loka and Fara (Kostel) in former Austria, Yugoslavia and present Slovenia. I would very much appriciated the information.

Gantselain (Corn meal) 2 1/2 cups corn flour,4 cups water,1 ts salt, 1 tbs butter. Pour flour slowly into boiling salted water. With wooden stirrer, carefully puncture hole through floating flour and cook for about 15 minutes. Then stir in butter and let simmer 15 to 20 minutes, covered and with low heat.Scoop up with stirrer and using a fork, shave off onto dish. This is from the Gottschee cookbook"Hoimischai Khoscht" {Home Taste}, by Albert Belay. We used to add bacon and sometimes pour coffee into it.
