Ridy:
Hi Paul ~
I was just coming to switch off the computer. . . you're a night owl like I am, it seems. It's been a miserable day here, part of it due to rain, which will stick around until Wednesday. But it's getting warmer, and that's good. Your Yankees took our Jays to the cleaners today - that's not good!

Good Evening and Good Night, I guess. Hope you all had a good Monday. Nice day in Minnesota. A little cool but no rain and temps to be in the 50's tomorrow with sunshine. My kind of day.
Enjoyed reading all the chats last night. We learn a great deal from each other and that is absolutely wonderful. I wish you a good week and sleep well.

Paul B.:
Hey Dan. I see you ordered Ridy's book..I know you will find it interesting, charming, and informative...enjoy. By reading it I am now reliving some of the stories, customs, and history that I have learned thru the years from my Gottscheer family. And some new things, that they did not tell me--or more likely that I have forgotten thru the years. See ya'........

Paul B,:
Excuse me if this is too lengthy, but I have to explain something,,,By the way Ridy, anyone who reads your book will know what I mean..But I feel a need to explain..When I was just 9, I started to work with my parents in the store. My father told me when I came home from school one day that this is what I had to do..He needed the help-he wanted me to learn-he tried to protect me from the streets=who knows? So I grew up dealing with adults the better part of my childhood..Don't get me wrong- I loved my MOM and POP..This was the way it was, period. Now at the age of 16 I meet the girl I immediately knew would be my wife one day-the sooner, the better...Up to that point my life was all work and no play--I knew no different.I meet the gottscheers and I find out-hey, there is more to life than just work..I finf a family of Gottscheers and friends that not only work hard--they also play hard-industrious hard working-but knew another side of life,, I am telling you, it was love at first sight all around..Two yrs later I marry Adie..Would you believe that since 1940 until now I have never had an argument with anyone in the family? It has been a healthy loving careing relationship from day one! I miss terribley the ones who are no longer with us-will never forget them..The book reminds me of all the things I learned from them..So you see, it gives me great pleasure and that is the Gods' honest truth,,and now I am going to cry--i am not ashamed either.......

Irene:
Paul B. I don't think what you are feeling is unusual. I have always thought that my relatives were the most hard working, fun loving people I have ever met. My uncles always had a joke and the women were always appreciative of their sense of humor. Perhaps none of us would be chatting if we didn't have "warm and fuzzy" feelings for our heritage. I always wanted to by like my aunt. She was no-nonsense, hardworking and could always make anyone feel good because when whe was listening to them she made that person feel as if they were the most important person on earth.

UTC is a fancy word for Greenwich Mean Time.

Irene:
Thanks Russell. How is your reserach going?
- 66.66.193.71 - Thursday, April 11, 2002 at 16:41:31 (UTC)
:
Ah - I see you already have a response to your question, Irene. I asked Helmuth what it meant, and he sent me basically the same response as Russell already provided for us. I'm glad you asked that question, because I always wondered what it meant as well.
It stands for Universal Time Coordinates, also known as GMT (Greenwich
Mean time). It is the time in Greenwich, England which is exactly 12
hours from the International Date Line, so it is the "mean" time for any
given day.
Basically it's 4 hours ahead of us in Daylight Savings, and 5 hours ahead
the rest of the year (since you are in Eastern time).

Hi, I'm looking for information about the Blau-Weiss Gottschee SC over-30 team. All the web links seem to have ended in 1999. Does the team still exist?
- 129.236.11.152 - Friday, April 12, 2002 at 18:30:47 (UTC)
Irene:
AS of March 1st 2002 the team was still on the web and actively playing so I assume it is still an active team. i would ask the phone operator to give you the number for the team so you can contact them directly. I have seen the team listed as Ridgewood Queens and Ridgewood Brooklyn so you might want to ask the operator using both locations. I used www.google.com and found recent hits immediately. I also found a history of the team when it originated in 1955. If you haven't tried google as a search engine, I think you will be impressed. If you're inerterested I'll tell you more tricks Google can do.

Sharon Eisenzopf:
I would like to obtain copies of the birthrecords from the books but don't know how to go by it. I have seen them on the microfilm. I spent all day at work thinking about it. I came up with an idea using the scanner. I thought if I can bring home the microfilm and put the page I'm looking at in the scanner and scan it, then enlarge it using the scanner, I could print out that page and then match it to the other side. I don't think the scanner would harm the film. I would like others opinions on it before I ask the church if I could. What would be the pros and cons of it.
- 206.172.22.39 - Friday, April 12, 2002 at 23:48:08 (UTC)
Jim H:
Sharon, putting the microfilm on a regular scanner won't give it enough clarity. I am not sure if they make a unit that will scan microfilms directly into a computer. If so, then it would be fine. I have tried photographing the images displayed by a microfilm reader using film and digital. The lighting is too uneven to do a good job for entire pages. If you are interested in only a portion of the page, it would work with either film or digital. A scanner is a great idea but it would have to be a scanner designed specifically for the purpose of storing whole pages.
- 205.188.193.26 - Saturday, April 13, 2002 at 01:06:21 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
Thanks Jim for the advice. I have used the scanner to zoom into object so small on a photo that it enlarged it so that I could see it better. I think I'll give it a try. I wouldn't hurt anything and I'll let you know how it turned out.

EVERYBODY LIKES MY VILLE!!!!!!!!!!!
- 24.184.120.186 - Saturday, April 13, 2002 at 03:26:16 (UTC)
Marilu Peschel Thurman:
Sharon, I don' think the LDS Church will let you take the microfilm from the library. Most librarys have a viewer that will make photocopies. That is what I have been doing.
- 205.188.201.146 - Saturday, April 13, 2002 at 04:29:26 (UTC)
John Herbst III:
Hi Sharon,
I agree with Marilu. I don't think you can get permission to take them home. You would have to receive permission from the Family History Library in Salt Lake to do such a thing. I noticed on my French films that they have a sticker that tells you that you can't reproduce or copy in anyway except for personal use. Which means you couldn't compile the names into a book and then reproduce or sell it. It could only be used by you personally. This is because of agreements the church has made with the French governments to allow the records to be only be used for genealogical purposes. As far as I know the Gottscheer records were not obtained the same way, but they may have some restrictions. I have never heard of any scanning projects approved by the church. The church does have extraction projects and they are all done by hand. Then double and triple checked. It's worth a try, but if you have to go through the church Family History in Salt Lake I don't believe you will be able to get permission. They are pretty strict about how microfilm is used. Let me know if you need to contact the Family History Center in Salt Lake and I will get you a contact to work through.

Greetings from a rainy Minnesota. Had beautiful sunshine until about 3 p.m. though. The snow is almost gone but the fishermen are still busy on the lake. Within 2 weeks or so we should see the blue waters of Waukenabo. Hope you are all enjoying a good day.
- 209.240.245.89 - Saturday, April 13, 2002 at 23:15:13 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
I would have to agree with you all after hearing your side. Copy right laws are important. Anyways I'm not going to have time to do it. My Aunt's (in-law) Mom passed away tonight so I'm going to busy helping her with the funeral arrangements. The women lived to be 101. Pretty good I say. She out lived the Queen Mom. She would always tell people she and the Queen Mom are the same age.
Thanks for the your info and the previous question. Always great to get another opinion.

Abou my Ville experience: Thanks for all the pointers Trix and Ridy.. I finally made it late Friday nite, by using a tip from each contributor and it turned swell.Proof of the pudding id that it was half gone by Saturday noon and totally gone by this morning. I made it in a 9 inch pan that my Mom used to make Pasta In Forno. Happy Sunday everyone.

Paul B.:
Dan: This is my simple way of making Ville, If I did it, anyone can.I cut up into cubes some left-over baked smoked ham-about a pound or little more-I cut into cubes a small loaf of white Wonder Bread-I whipped up9 eggs and added the bread ,salt, pepper and mushed it all up and set it aside. Then I put cubed bacon=1 lb, a med.size onion (chopped) and the meat into a large frying pan and blanched it slowly with some butter added to it.I let it simmer till it was kina' glazed looking while I buttered a 9 inch porcelain deep dish pan. Now i mixed it altogether in the bowl and filled the pan with it, Covered it with reynolds Wrap and put it in the oven I had preheated at 375 degrees for abot forty five minutes-I checked after 35 and put it back in uncovered..Took it out-loosened the sides with a nice flat spatula-turned it upside down onto aplatter & the rest is history.I hope noone is offended because i took so much space,,,,,,

Hi Sherri!
I figure I'm about your mother's age. . . .
All I want for my birthday is a ticket on a Mediterranean cruise - preferably on the QE2 - and preferably for about 3 months. I don't care when, as long as it's soon!

Way to go Ridy!!! Sharon, another thought for your mother is to ask her: "Mom, what can I help you with?". Believe me, she will appreciate that very much especially if you do it. When done take her out for dinner.

Paul, CONGRATULATIONS! The ville sounds absolutely nummy to me too. Have never baked it this way but with casings getting harder and harder to find this is a great alternative. The only thing that I would add would be some finely chopped parsley.

I am with you, Irene. No sign of light on the east coast but it was a very nice day to take a walk and stay outside.

Were you raised in Ridgewood?
- 66.66.193.71 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 01:21:32 (UTC)
Marilu Peschel Thurman:
Jim, I got an answer from someone finally on my Ludwig Kump and Maria Peschel. He looked in the 1910 census, and Ludwig was married to a Sophia, I think. So I am still looking for Maria Peschel in New York.

Guten Abend, all of you!

Hi Irene. Forgive me but to where in Gottschee is your connection? You are related to Sharon?
- 216.251.169.34 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 01:23:32 (UTC)
Marilu Peschel Thurman:
Ridy, you can send that rain back my way. We can certaily use it!

Jim Heimann:
Do you have Maria's exact birthday? If you do, you might try the social security index, put in Mary and variants along with the dates. Perhaps you will get lucky.

Jim Heimann:
We are getting enough wet stuff for the spring but we are still playing catch up for the lack of snow this winter.
- 64.12.104.157 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 01:26:39 (UTC)
Marilu Peschel Thurman:
Yes I have Maria's exact birthday, but have not searched for her that way. I guess it is worth a try.
- 64.12.107.174 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 01:27:07 (UTC)
Marilu Peschel Thurman:
I was just so sure she came here to marry Ludwig!!!! lololo He was her contact she listed on her passenger list.

Irene:
My mother's maiden name was Marie Eisenzopf from Hohenegg. I met Sharon on the Internet. She thought her grandfather was from Germany. We established a Hohenegg connection, but we are missing a link that will connect our two famiies. Sharon sent me pictures that her grandfather collected and one group picture showed my mother as a little girl. We share pictures of the same people. There are many coincedences but we can't find the missing link.

Marilu Peschel Thurman:
A party? We missed a party?

Irene:
Jim,
What type of Dr. are you?
- 66.66.193.71 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 01:31:27 (UTC)
Trix:
Irene - there just has to be a connection. With a unique name like Eisenzopf there has to be! So, who in your family, was born in Hohenegg? Have you ever been there? I visited the village in June of 1996. There are quite a few Gottscheers around who were born there. There is Norbert Lackner, the President of the Gottscheer Relief Assn. in Toronto and a director on the GHGA, Helmut Tramposch's family comes from Hohenegg. There are still a few houses in good condition standing int he village.
- 216.251.169.34 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 01:32:43 (UTC)
Jim Heimann:
I am a diagnostic and interventional radiologist.
We had a wine party at the house last night. We won it at a fundraiser last year and had a party of 12 last night. Good wine, good cheese, and assorted other food.
- 64.12.104.157 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 01:35:26 (UTC)
Jim Heimann:
Irene, do you know the names of Marie's parents?
- 64.12.104.157 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 01:35:56 (UTC)
Irene:
Yes, I agree. How can there be Eisenzopf's from Hohenegg and not be related to each other. I still have living uncles and aunts. They feel Sharon's family may have immigrated before they were born. My family comes from #17. Sherri has a picture of families members standing in front of a house next door to #17. It was labeled her grandfather's house.
I have been to Gottschee once in the late 1970s bout I don't think I was in Hohenegg.
- 66.66.193.71 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 01:38:18 (UTC)

Marie's parents were Franz and Maria

Jim,
My husband is a psychiatrist who has a reputation as a good psychchopharmacologist.
I'm getting my Ph.D. in information science. My dissertation in on the electronic medical record.
- 66.66.193.71 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 01:41:46 (UTC)
Trix:
Irene: We have a daughter with a Ph.D. It is a huge untertaking, agree? How far along are you on yours? I congratulate you. Who, in your Gottscheer family was born in Gottschee? Perhaps grandparents?
- 216.251.169.34 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 01:43:57 (UTC)
Irene:
I finished all my course work, passed all my exams. The only hurdle left is the dissertation.
When you are in your 50s it is a huge undertaking.
It was my mother who was born in Hohenegg.
What is your daughter's Ph.D. in?

- 216.251.169.34 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 01:58:08 (UTC)
Jim Heimann:
Irene, I don't think I have much to add to the picture but I would guess that is Franz E. and Maria Kresse from Ort. I had her brothers in file (Richard, Alois, and Heinrich) but not much other information. Franz E.'s father was also Franz according to the Umsiedlung records. Congratulations on the phd. and good luck with the dissertation.
- 64.12.104.157 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 01:59:51 (UTC)
Irene:
That is correct. Maria Kresse had seven brothers. Are you related to the Kresses?
- 66.66.193.71 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:02:15 (UTC)
Jim Heimann:
Irene, for you and Sharon --- link could be in the prior generation. Sharon tracks her tree back to Josef E. born in 1859 and yours (if I was correct before) to Franz E. born in 1876. They may have been brothers. I wonder if Josef's father was Franz as well. That would make the link even more likely.
- 64.12.104.157 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:03:28 (UTC)
Jim Heimann:
Irene, not related to either the Eisenzopfs or the Kresses. My immediate ancestors were Schauer and Koenig from the Unterwarmberg area.
- 64.12.104.157 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:04:16 (UTC)
Marilu Peschel Thurman:
Irene, Jim is assembling a data base of Gottscheers. When ever he finds something, he adds it. Correct, Jim?

Sharon Eisenzopf:
Good evening everyone. Sure enjoying the spring weather.
- 206.172.22.223 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:08:40 (UTC)
Irene:
Jim,
Thanks, I'll check into that connection.
There was a lawyer in Ridgewood named Schauer. Are you related to him?
- 66.66.193.71 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:08:48 (UTC)
Irene:
Hi Sharon,
We have been talking about you. Check the log for tonight.
- 66.66.193.71 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:09:31 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
Hi Jim, My G. Grandfather had my Grandfather when he was about in his 40's. Now that is what my Mother thinks. She thinks she can recall that G. Grandfather died when Grandfather was about 7 years old. That will be my next clue to search for.
- 206.172.22.223 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:12:09 (UTC)
Irene:
Jim,
For accuracy in your database. Alois in the records was my grandmother's nephew. Alois' father also Alois was a businessman in the city of Gottschee and was killed before he left the city of Gottschee.
- 66.66.193.71 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:13:08 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
I always read the log before I chat. Therefore I know what tonights subject is.
- 206.172.22.223 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:13:17 (UTC)
Jim Heimann:
Marilu, almost everything. My fingers are not fast enough and time isn't long enough for everything but ... I try. William Schauer is a distant cousin. He and I are related six or seven times through various branches.
- 64.12.104.157 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:14:13 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
Irene did Russell have Alois down as a name in his records?
- 206.172.22.223 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:14:24 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
OK I checked his message and that name isn't on the message.
- 206.172.22.223 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:15:30 (UTC)
Irene:
Sharon,
I don't know. He hasn't communicated his research to me. It is Alois Kresse that I'm talking about.
- 66.66.193.71 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:16:04 (UTC)
Ridy:
Irene -
I think you are talking about Alois Kresse. . . If you are, he was killed by the Partisanen in Untersteiermark at the end of WWII - four years after we left Gottschee

This Wednesday I'm going to order another film to retrieve G.Grandfathers birth record.
- 206.172.22.223 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:16:19 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
Ok but there was an Alois Eisenzopf listed in Genealogy.com. Pretty sure but hold me to that.
- 206.172.22.223 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:17:20 (UTC)
Irene:
Sharon,
How is your Aunt and her family doing?
- 66.66.193.71 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:17:33 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
She is doing pretty good. They knew it would come. Her Mom broke her hip and it pretty much went down from there.
- 206.172.22.223 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:18:37 (UTC)
Irene:
Sharon,
Do you know anything about this Alois E.? I have a living uncle who is Alois Eisenzopf.
- 66.66.193.71 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:19:47 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
No I just seen that name on that web site.
- 206.172.22.223 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:20:27 (UTC)
Irene:
Ridy,
Thank you. I must have gotten confused. Arnold told me that.
- 66.66.193.71 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:20:36 (UTC)
Jim Heimann:
Sharon, if your information is correct, then my theory about how you link up is not correct. Who knows? Sometimes family history can be wrong. Irene, thank you for the information. The resettlement records do list the father of Alois born in 1924 as Franz. Is that the same Alois?
- 64.12.104.157 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:21:26 (UTC)
Irene:
Ridy,
I'm confused again. Where was
- 66.66.193.71 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:22:27 (UTC)
Jim Heimann:
Irene, I am talking about Alois Eisenzopf. I haven't run anything down on the Kresses.
- 64.12.104.157 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:22:57 (UTC)
Jim Heimann:
Perhaps last night's wine is muddling the airwaves. In vino veritas .... and all that.
- 64.12.104.157 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:23:53 (UTC)
Irene:
Ridy,
Sorry, pushed the send button accidently. Were was Untersteiermark located? I have an uncle who married a lady from Steiermark who he met when he was at one of the relocation camps. Were the two areas close to each other?
- 66.66.193.71 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:24:43 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
Jim, no one really knows too much because my Grandparents never talked about relatives in the old country. I guess they thought they should stay quiet because at the time they came to Canada, a war was brewing over there and they didn't want to go back. They got their citizenship as soon as possible.
- 206.172.22.223 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:25:12 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
Plus I think it was hard for them to look back. After all they had no family here.
- 206.172.22.223 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:27:01 (UTC)
Irene:
Jim,
Yes, the dates match. Alois E. born in 1924 is my living uncle.
- 66.66.193.71 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:27:33 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
Told my father that he was wrong about what town my Grandfather came from. He thought it was Katzendorf but his birthrecord shows Hohenegg.
- 206.172.22.223 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:29:20 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
I also found my Great Grandparents on Grandma side in the record also. You know I wish they would record the rightside first then the leftside of the books. It would make more sense that way you read the last name first.
- 206.172.22.223 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:31:15 (UTC)
Jim Heimann:
From what I gather from my mom, her parents did not speak very much of the old country except to say that life was hard and they were poor.
- 64.12.104.157 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 02:31:37 (UTC)
Ridy:
Irene -
I'm not sure if you have the first or a later edition of our book, but check page 217, and on it you should find a reference to your uncle Alois Kresse and the manner in which he and his family met their death in 1945. It's above the picture of the names on the wall in the Gedenkstätte in Graz.
Untersteiermark was the name given to the area where Gottscheers were resettled in 1941. It's just a short distance from Gottschee.
Steiermark is a Province in Austria, directly across the border from Yogoslavia - or Slovenia as it is now again called.

So -- who is in charge of the remote?
- 64.229.253.87 - Monday, April 15, 2002 at 22:51:20 (UTC)
Trix:
Hi Ridy. Good to see your message. Actually, when The Practice comes on the remote remains untouched. I find this show just fascinating and NEVER dull. Other times, though, I like to control the remote.
Hope you are having a beautiful day in Toronto. We had 78 (a difference of 25° from yesterday. The weekend we are looking at 45°. Is it going to be another weird year?
OK Paul, lets have it. Who controls the remote in your home? Let's be honest here.
To you both, my best and greetings to the rest of the regulars.

Ridy-Trix, When we watch together, Adie has the remote-has to set the volume to her liking-drives me nuts sometimes, but I don't mind as long as we are watching together.I or even she sets it on MUTE during the commercials! And that is the whole truth..I believe it when you say I do for better and for worse..Because if you really love someone that is the way it should be..We had a discussion with some of the newly married-like ten years, one was complaining about the snoring..She knows Adie snores and she said(in front of my wife) how can you stand it I would sleep in another room--my answer to my daughter-in laws question was, It is something called love-pure and simple.....And we have never slept separate, and we never will. Hope the good Lord gives us another 60 years,,,,,,,,

Hello all - I am beginning to research my Gottscheer heritage and don't really know how to start. The maiden name of my Great Grandmother is difficult to trace - Reicher. Her parents died in 1945 in Sterntal. She was from somewhere near Schalkenburg. Any advice?
- 169.71.1.249 - Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at 12:53:10 (UTC)
Trox:
Good Morning Joe M. Good to see your inquiry. I am thinking that the village is Schalkendorf near the City of Gottschee, which is located in the western part of the former Gottscheer region. Do you have a birthdate for your great-grandmother? Also a full name along with the name of her parents? Please send me an e-mail at: wyants@mlecmn.net. Look forward to hearing from you and wish you a good day.

Pula was part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire from the mid 1800s till the empire's colapse after WW1. The A-H empire used Pula as a naval base. Pula is on the Istria penninsula. The North west part of the Penninsula was part of Slovenia and the rest was part of Croatia. Pula is in the south west part of the penninsula. The Italians occupied it for a while after the Austrians.

Hi, everyone, Happy Friday to you also. If Bine does not read English could someone translate my info for him. I read German but my writing is terrible. The lycos site has links to online phonebooks from all over the world. In most of these phone books you can search by a person's name. For small countries such as Austria or Slovenia you can just put in the person's last name and see what turns up. This is especially useful if you looking for distant relatives living in certain countries.

I forgot to say in most cases the name of the village, city etc. is not necessary except if you are looking for a common name entering both nsurname and village will narrow the number of names the computer will give back to you.

Hi Paul. Eat for me too. We do not have that restaurant close but I see the great ads all the time. From where in Gottschee are the Krens from? Enjoy the evening and easy on the wine, particularly if you are driving ok?
- 216.251.178.34 - Saturday, April 20, 2002 at 21:34:07 (UTC)
Paul B.:
Hi Trix: Did not go to restaurant- my stomach just made that decision for me, and I had to cancel.Mynephew Kren is the son of Alois Kren form(and I know this spelling is wrong) but he is from -Pronounced Marjon- I forget how it is spelled, but i know it is nothing like it sounds, at least in English anyway..My brother-in law alois (louie) was one of my best friends. His brother Ferdel was a big meat purveyor in Gottschee.Louie married my wifes sister Emma jaklitsch who came from Verderb..Thry are now both gone-miss them something awful-when I made the Ville, my kids said that it tasted just like Aunt Emma used to make. That was a big compliment for me...Do you know any Krens?

Paul: What would you say to Malgern? I believe there is an Alois Kren from Malgern in the Resettlement records.
Yes, I know Ludwig Kren, the famous author and former editor of the Gottscheer Zeitung. He lives in Austria.

I think Paul means Massern
- 64.229.235.238 - Sunday, April 21, 2002 at 02:03:46 (UTC)
Paul B.:
Hi Ridy & Trix--That Massern looks more like it Ridy-I might have seen it that way on the Gottscheer map once. You mentioned Zeitung Trix and it brought back a memory of when Ferdel was here from Gottschee on a visit. I think I might have mentioned that he stopped by my Italian restaurant that I owned back in the fifties..Well when he got back home someone sent us the newspaper from Gottschee in which he had written an article about his USA visit and he criticised how we lived with houses so close to one another, and some other things too.He of course was talking about Ridgewood and Glendale where the houses were on small plots close together..The Gottscheers who were living here then were quite upset about that. I never thought he said it as an insult-he was used to larger plots of land,,Had I known then, I would have taken him out to the suburbs on long Island and showed him the larger pieces of property..
- 24.184.120.186 - Sunday, April 21, 2002 at 04:09:12 (UTC)
Trix:
Hi Paul. Now I know why you love the Italian Food. Not only are you of Italian heritage but owned a restaurant too. No doubt it was excellent cuisine.
Do you remember the month and year when your friend visited and wrote about it in the Zeitung? Would be fun to try to find the article and read it again.
They are predicting up to 7 inches of snow in the southern part of Minnesota with perhaps 1 or 2 up here. It has been a weird month. I wonder what it means for the rest of the summer. Of course, I remember quite a few fishing season openers in Minnesota when it snowed and was very nasty and that is in the middle of May. Enjoy a wonderful Sunday and Danke for sharing. Hi Ridy!!!
- 216.251.178.21 - Sunday, April 21, 2002 at 11:19:29 (UTC)
Paul B,:
Happy Sunday Trix...Just scalled Frank in Fl, and he thinks that freudenberg is an Austrian name.He is going to a German Picnic in Fl. today-he and lorraine work the ticket booth there sometimes. He said he would ask Mitzi Hauck about the year thatFerdel was here. Adie tells me that ferdel said that the houses were cheaply made here because they were made of plaster board instead of stucco. So as soon as I get the exact year, I will let you know..Incidently, do you recognize the name BENCIN? Frank thinks that might have been Italian influence..I remember then father and/or son Frank Bencina..I am sure they used to say Tante Bencina..They owned a noodle factory in B'klyn, N.Y. Cousin Frank says that one son Tommy Bencin belongs to either GHGA or some other Gottscheer Historical Society..Recognize any of this? As for the Italian food, I am afraid it doesn't like me too much. But I did own and cook in my own restaurant...I like all foods, as long as it likes me-which is not always the case. That is a curse for people who like to eat as I do....That's life...Gotta go-have some Sunday chores today....Will try to catch you on tonite, hopefully....Enloy your day..

Paul B,:
P,S. Trix, I guess my food was good down home cooking, unlike some of the Italian dishes they make today that are Amercanized.I know my Gottscheer relatives and friends always came in to eat..It was a succcessful restaurant= I made Pizza too.I have to tell you a Gottscheer story about my restaurant, when I was tending bar for thr first three years, before i went into the Kitchen..I'll save that story for now..
- 24.184.120.186 - Sunday, April 21, 2002 at 16:45:27 (UTC)
Trix:
Thank you Paul for your great story sharing. They are fun to read. You are correct about Tom Bencin. He is indeedd of Gottscheer heritage and also wrote the marvelous story about Gottschee and the Gottscheers. I believe he wrote it while completing his Master Thesis at one of the New York Universities and then generously donated it to the GHGA for publication. We have sold many, many copies and he wrote it in such a way that it was easy to follow and easy to understand. We have received many wonderful comments regarding the publication. It is still available for purchase.

John, working on this and that. Looking over the Altlag marriage file and seeing what fits in the file. Still going through some of the Ellis Island information whenever Trix sends me on a search. Sorry about all the dry conditions you're experiencing, people. Guess we've been hoarding the wet stuff because our lake levels are supposed to be back to normal later this year. Don't know why 'later' -- we've had enough rain to fill a couple of extra lakes, I think! The marina operators are apparently ecstatic

Did your Gottscheer ancestors settle in the Western US or is that just of late? My family settled in central Wyoming near the town of Shoshoni. My Great Uncles settled in the area and my Grandfather followd in 1912. It is said that my 2nd Great Grandfather came to the US and wanted to settle in the US, but his wife didn't want to come. So he instead sent his son's. All but two of the 8 brothers came to the US. All came at different times and probably varied reasons.

Marilu Peschel Thurman:
My Peschel family settled in Iowa and Nebraska in the 1870-1880's. I am in Colorado by way of Minnesota where I grew up. lol We like to travel I guess.

John Herbst III:
Were they cattle ranchers or farmers, etc. I believe there was a Pesche they owned a sale ring in Riverton, WY. Did any of your ancestors drop the L in their name?
- 209.240.222.32 - Monday, April 22, 2002 at 02:44:41 (UTC)
Marilu Peschel Thurman:
They were farmers. I don't think any of them dropped the L, but it was spelled Peshel and Peschel, and sometimes with an A instead of E. I do have two brothers in wyoming, last name is Underberg. One lives in Douglas and one in New Castle.
- 152.163.213.64 - Monday, April 22, 2002 at 02:48:11 (UTC)
John Herbst III:
Did they move to Wyoming during the depression or precipitated moving to Wyoming? There were a lot of Missouri folks and many from Kansas who came during the Dust Bowl years to the Riverton/Shoshoni area of Wyoming during this period. They couldn't make a living and came west to a lot of the Reclamation projects.

Marilu Peschel Thurman:
In my research, I discovered a lot of Gottscheer families settled in Waterford Township, Clinton co, Iowa.
- 152.163.213.64 - Monday, April 22, 2002 at 02:52:48 (UTC)
Marilu Peschel Thurman:
No, my brothers have only been in Wyoming about 20 years. I have been in Colorado about 30 years now.

John Herbst III:
That's very interesting about the settlements in Iowa. I always thought most Gottscheers settled in New York City and Ohio. That is where most of my grandfathers family settled. It is interesting to here the stories of others who settled in areas you would never dream of. I guess many of them went where they would be accepted or where people would have them. My Grandfather was fortunate that he had family they kind of plowed the way for him.
- 209.240.222.132 - Monday, April 22, 2002 at 02:55:44 (UTC)
Marilu Peschel Thurman:
My great-grandfather came here in 1882, and he had family who came ahead of him also. the ones that settled in waterford Township started coming in the 1860's. A branch of my Peschel family was among them. However my great grandfather settle in western Iowa, and then moved to Nebraska.

John Herbst III:
Are your brother's farmers or what do they do for a living? My brother lives in a little place called Huntley, not far from the Nebraska border. He farms, ranches, and raises horses. It is possible they may know them. Especially if the raise registered stock.
- 209.240.222.131 - Monday, April 22, 2002 at 02:59:27 (UTC)
John Herbst III:
Where in Nebraska did they settle? My Grandmothers mother was born in Madison Co., Iowa and then there family eventually settled in Box Butte County.

Marilu Peschel Thurman:
My brother in New Castle works for the state youth center, and the one in douglas worked for a trailer sales place, and then at the high school in maintaince. Is retired from that and has his own rental equipment business now.

Marilu Peschel Thurman:
Peschels settled in Osmond which is close to Norfolk Nebraska. Are still some of them living there now. My grandparents moved to Minnesota, and so that is how I grew up there.

John Herbst III:
Very interesting, Marilu. It's interesting how immigrants come to be in certain places. My Mom's father came from France and was recruited as sheepherder. He eventually started his own ranch and settled in the same area that he was recruited to.

Marilu Peschel Thurman:
Yes, I have found it very interesting also. Some of the early Gottscheers settled in Chicago, and also several different places in Minnesota. I have learned a lot of history doing all of this digging. And I guess it is time to call it a night. See you all next week.

Russell Doucette:
Good evening. About the residents of Gottscheer and the surrounding area: Were they Catholic, Lutherian, Jewish or something else?
- 152.163.194.206 - Tuesday, April 23, 2002 at 02:29:10 (UTC)
Trix:
I am pretty sure that probably 100% were Catholic. The Gottscheers practiced their religion faithfully and believed deeply. An interesting pesonal observation: In 1984 I made my first visit to Tschermoschnitz, Gottschee the area of my birth. While visiting the beautiful, big, old church you could clearly see the grooves in the wooden kneeling benches from heavy usage throughout the many, many years. It was quite a site because our parents talked about kneeling on the wooden boards often. I think their deep faith was the strength of the Gottscheers, particularly the women.
The first time I ever heard of a Lutheran was in nearly Kärnten where I lived from 1946 to 1952. Even there the people would point a finger and say: He or she is a Luthern. How times have changed!!!

When I was little and my mother would say the name EISENZOPF I always got the idea that her father was German-Jewish. I have nothing against being Jewish. But I've wondered if I had relatives that died in the contration camps.

Irene:
Russell. I too am under the impresion that Gottschee was 100% Catholic. Although I haven't met many outside my immediate family, I have never met a Jewish Eisenzopf. I married a Jewish man and that may have confused you when we corresponded initially. However, I am Catholic. I do have an interesting story. I found an Eisenzopf on the Internet who lives in Austria. We started to correspond. It turns out that his grandfather was the illegitmate son of one of my great aunts. For obvious reasons she moved from Gottschee to Austria. When Hitler came along, he wanted prove of "germanicity" for several generations back. the illegitmate child (now an adult) had no such proof and he had very little knowledge if any where his mother immigrated from. It was a big mess and potentially a very dangerous situation. The situation did resolve itself successfully. The neighbors voched for them and they may have found some information connecting them with their Gottschee roots.
My genealogy information is from the baptismal information going as far back has the 18th century. Also you mentioned that there were lots of Eisenzopfs working for the papal court. I have the impression (although no facts to back it up), that recently converted Jews would not have been allowed to work in the p. court back then.
One more thought, my mother never mentioned the existence of any other churches or sinagoge in Gottschee except the Catholic church.
Does anyone know if there were protestant churches in Gottschee.?
Russell, do you have any information you can share about the papal court Eisenzopfs? I think that would be very interesting to know.
I have been a practicing Catholic all my life, but I haven't gone to church in the last two weeks since this scandal just keeps on getting worse. I am truly sick over it.
- 66.66.193.71 - Tuesday, April 23, 2002 at 13:25:33 (UTC)
Irene:
Russell,
One more thought. If there were Jews in Gotschee, during the undersiedlung period, the Jews would have been rounded up and taken to a concentration camp or shot. There is no mention of anything like this happening in the records of Gottshcee. Ironically, The Germans were fanatical about keeping records of Jewish culture they destroyed.
I need to spend the rest of the day writing my dissertation.
This was a fun break.
- 66.66.193.71 - Tuesday, April 23, 2002 at 13:35:31 (UTC)
Irene:
Russell, I will look for any excuse not to work on my dissertation. I just checked a couple of Internet data babases concerning lists of Jewish surnames. The name "Eisenzopf" always comes up with "zero hits." So we can assume that Eisenzopf is not a Jewish surname. Now I really must get some work done.

Russell:
As far as Eisenzopf being Jewish, that is just a guess on my part. The name sounds like it might be Jewish. All I know about my grandfather and his family is what my mother has told me, I don't have any documention to back it up. But most of what documention I have backs what what I've been told.
- 209.240.222.132 - Tuesday, April 23, 2002 at 15:25:49 (UTC)
Irene:
Thanks Ridy, I'm having a hard time concentrating today. As proof of my lack of concentration I did the following:
Russell you may be interested in this. I checked the Italian phone book. There are no Eisenzopf's listed. I checked the Swiss phone book, thinking that the Eisenzopf's may have been papal guards but there were no Eisenzopf's listed in the Swiss phone book. There is one Eisenzopf listed in the German phone directory and several Eisenzopf's listed in the Austrian phone book.
Now I'm not touching the Internet comuter for several hours.

Russell,
The easiest way to look for American relatives is by using Yahoo.com. There is a small paragraph of links. Click on "people search". Eisenzopf, Eisenzapf is such an unusual name that you don't have to put in anything else. It should give you a listing of these names, their addresses, telephone# for all over the country. It will even give you a map showing you where they live. I think this last bit of information is scary. Sometime I'll tell you about a crazy lady who sent my husband arsenic disguised as a nutrional supplement. I threatned lawsuits to get our name off of the Yahoo listings. (The lady was arrested and died in prison of a pre-existing cancerous condition.)

O.K. Trix-Here goes....Adie and Peter (Mymiddle son) had a Gorgonzola Salad it is made of dandelions-Oriccio-baby spinach-crutons-Garnished with vinegar & oil and Gorgonzola cheese ,something like Feta cheese cubes, except it is like Blue Cheese. I had Straccietteli soup--Chicken broth with strips of spinach...Adie had Calamari(fried rings of egg battered squid) with Marinara sauce....Peter had Scallops Francais ( Broiled scallops in a butter lemon sauce) Me I had angel hair pasta with red clam sauce.Very thin spaghetti garnished with chopped clams that are first sauteed in garlic and oil and than added to a marinara tomatoe sauce. That happens to be one of my Italian cooking specialties--noone makes it like I do-Yes I am bragging, The way I make clam sauce white or red is with a lot of TLC, and they would have to charge you twice what they charge for their idea of that dish//Ask any of my Gottscheers that eat my clam sauce and they will concur...

Thank You Paul. WOW an impressive selection of good food. I particularly liked the dandelion salad. We ate that in Gottschee and Austria too. Usually my mother cut up a boiled potato and made it with vinegar/oil dressing. Always liked it. I, too, cook a lot of Gottscheer dishes. One of my favorites is Buarmei eapfle mit schaurei kumalein (warm fried potatoes with sour cucumbers). Of course a nice piece of chicken or steak goes well with it but does not necessarily have to be.
Paul, THANK YOU for the lesson. Now, when can I come for dinner and enjoy your specialty? Would be so great!!!

Well I read over the transcript and to Russell, the name Eisenzopf is German, and my relatives were Catholic. Their birth records show that they were baptized and when Dad was born here they had him baptized Catholic here at the Catholic church. Also go into Ancestry.com and in the Eisenzopf forum you can retrieve Eisenzopf phone numbers for the US and Overseas there. Thats where I got my information.

Sharon-When this dish is made in the frying pan, its' really what the diners call home fries, and I happen to love home fries as side dish-or substitute for a veggie-the one made in the pot is a different taste all together. Trix:
Good Morning Irene. I am glad to see that you are taking a break from your dissertation. It is ok to do so.
I lived in Altfinkenstein, near the Faaker See near Villach, not at all far from Spittal an der Drau. Have been there numerous times and have visited the Gottscheer Museum located in the old castle there. Perhaps your aunt could check it out to see if it is still in place. They did a nice job arranging their collection.
It is very cold at Waukenabo. We have 29° degrees and trying hard to snow. Along with that we have very strong north winds. So, for the day at least, winter has returned. Unbelievable!
Suggestion for the day: Make yourself a nice cup of Gottscheer tea - Kamillen Tee mit Zitrone, Hönig und ein bißchen Zucker or Kamillen tea with lemon, honey and a little sugar. You will enjoy it.
Good luck.

Trix, Yes you can tell I'm hovering over the plauderzimmer making excuses not to work. I've been to Villach and the Faaker See. I have also been to the Gottscheer museum. I have never been to Altfinkenstein.
We have unusual weather here in Albany as well. It is supoose to rain for the next several hours. We really do need the rain. The temperature is in the 50s today. Two weeks ago it was 90 degress. I'm surprised that my flowers are doing as well as they have.
Thanks for the tee suggestion. I have all the ingredients. I haven't had Kamillen tee made exactly that way since childhood.
Thanks for the moral support. I'm going to take my tea and go upstairs to do some writing. You are very sweet.

Irene: Time for another break, then more tea and more typing.
Picture yourself in Villach looking south. You will see the huge Karawanken Mountain Range (also border with Slovenia) Nestled at the foot of the range is Baumgartnerhof, a motel/restaurant/farm complex. There are only 3 houses in this part. The remains of the Ruine Finkenstein ist just below Baumgartnerhof. The view from there to the valley below including Villach, the Wörthersee and even the Hohen Tauern Mountain Range (Salzburg on the other side) is fantastic. I loved living there, love returning there, have wonderful memories from there but am happy and peaceful in Minnesota too.
Irene, back to the computer. Keep plugging away.

Trix:
Hi Irene. Good that you took another break and check in. Enjoy the rest of the afternoon.
Paul: Found the article about your friend Ferdl Kren but it was published in 1958. Have not had a chance to read it but it is a biggie. Will need to be translated from the German. Any ideas who could do it? I shall be glad to send you a copy of the original article.
Will try to glance it tonight. Hectic day until then.
Take care everybody and stay warm. Still quite coooool here.

My grandfather's name was Joseph. He was born in Italy in 1892. His father was born in the "area north of Italy" as my mother puts it. I'm not sure (and neither is my mother) exactly what his last name was because between him and his brothers there were 4 differnt variations of the name used.

- 66.66.193.120 - Monday, April 29, 2002 at 01:35:49 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
I wrote do some quick infor on Eisenzopfs from the microfilm but just from the right side of the book. It came from film #1346982. I have Josepha Eisenzopf b.7/5/1858 married in 1882 to Stomisch b. 1/9/1846. Now thats the best I could read from the films. The names weren't very clear but I did my best to translate.
- 206.172.22.55 - Monday, April 29, 2002 at 01:37:27 (UTC)

I believe it was from page 177 rightside if she obtains the film and wants to look it up.

I have a wonderfull curry chicken salid recipe I would like to share. Buty encough chiken breast and microwave. Sprinkle in hot and mild curry to taste. Salt, peper, seedless grapes, celery, nuts and low fat mayonase. Mix well. Taste better if made a day ahead.

Trix:
Good Evening everyone. Have had very busy but productive day. No, no, Irene, this is no time to "get discouraged". Getting to this point in your heavy duty studies is a GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT. Now hammer the d--- thing home and get it done. When you do we will all rejoice and celebrate.
On to another point. I don't know if any of you have followed a posting in the Gottscheer Bulletin Board by a lady from England who found and purchased a sampler created by a Gottscheerin by the name of Maria Eppich, born in 1903 in Lienfeld by the City of Gottschee. Teresa, the lady in England purchased it from e-Bay, was trying to figure out if Lienfeld was a name or a village. With her knowledge of samplers she decided to pursue this matter, went on the Internet, typed in Lienfeld which connected her to the GHGA Web Site. She took it another step further and decided to write a memo to the 9 board members including me. Received a memo like that, of course, was music to my ears and I, too, needed to pursue it further.
Well, turns out that Maria Eppich was indeed born in Lienfeld, never married and died in New York last year at the age of 97. She has 2 sisters still living, one here the other in Austria.
Being Gottscheer born myself finding this kind of work which was created at a very young age, and taught is schools, is quite a find. So am wondering if any of you might be familiar with Samplers which usually include the alphabe, the numbers, the name of the creator and the date. Would be very nice to identify them and perhaps collect them, or at the very least photos of them, for a possible future publication on a book about the Gottscheer Woman.
I would appreciate you asking your family or friends, particularly the older generation to see what you could learn.
Look forward to reading your responses and/or findings. This is exciting stuff!
Enjoy the evening and take care everyone.

Can you stand of curry when you cook it? When we have an order for Curry Chicken I want to run out of the room. I can't stand that smell. Boy it is sure powerful smell.

Irene, would you repeat the recipe again. I am a slow learner I guess or a bad reader. Sounds terrific and I would like to try it.
Danke!

Irene: is there a sub for curry? I have used it. What does it taste like?
- 216.251.169.5 - Monday, April 29, 2002 at 01:54:27 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
I like to make a salad with bacon bits ( real bacon bits ) and steamed chicken breast boneless and skinless. Then I'll pour some ranch dressing on it. Makes a nice light summer meal when its hot out. Plus I'm trying to stop eating some much deep fried food. Not healthy for me.

Irene:
Trix, I don't have measurements for this chicken salid but it is wonderful. Buy enough chicken breast that will feed the number of people you invite. I like to use a mixture of hot and mild curry powder but you could use only either one. If using only one kind of curry I would perfer mild because you can keep adding to it until it tastes right to you. Also Ilike to see the yellow color on the chiken. Put in the mayonase, celery, salt and peper to taste, mix. I put in the grapes next to last. I put in the walnuts when everyone is at my house because you would be surprised at the number of people who have food allergies to nuts. If someone has a nut allergy I put the nuts in a separate bowl and tell people to help themselves on their salid.
- 66.66.193.120 - Monday, April 29, 2002 at 02:02:06 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
Thats a good idea about nuts. We have alot of people ask if we use peanut oil at work. We don't because that is so expense and we don't need it.
- 206.172.22.55 - Monday, April 29, 2002 at 02:04:07 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
Irene did you make any perogies yet? I keep getting bothered about making them.
- 206.172.22.55 - Monday, April 29, 2002 at 02:05:08 (UTC)
Irene:
Trix, I don't know of a sub for curry. Curry is Indian. If you have never used it buy the mild spice and flaver to taste. If you can't find curry, I can send you a bottle.
- 66.66.193.120 - Monday, April 29, 2002 at 02:06:06 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
You could make a sub out of it. That sounds really good right now. I would use brown bread subbuns.
- 206.172.22.55 - Monday, April 29, 2002 at 02:07:25 (UTC)
Irene:
Sherri, I haven't made the perogies yet. But I remember our trick about using a glass to cut the dough. I think that is very clever.
- 66.66.193.120 - Monday, April 29, 2002 at 02:08:22 (UTC)
Irene:
That was a type. It should read "your trick"
- 66.66.193.120 - Monday, April 29, 2002 at 02:08:55 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
I just roll out mine and then cut squares about 2 to 3 inches big. place the mix in the center then fold to opposite corners and tuck in the 2 sides and pinch close. Now if I'm right thats the Ukranian way of making them.
- 206.172.22.55 - Monday, April 29, 2002 at 02:10:19 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
they should look like rounded off triangles. It takes some time to learn that way. glass is a good way if just starting out.
- 206.172.22.55 - Monday, April 29, 2002 at 02:11:40 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
I keep the left over dough and roll it out and make squares and cook them up also. I add them to the pot with the perogies. No need to waste.
- 206.172.22.55 - Monday, April 29, 2002 at 02:13:34 (UTC)
Irene:
Sherri, I will need to make it because my husband loves them.
- 66.66.193.120 - Monday, April 29, 2002 at 02:14:19 (UTC)

They is people in town here who make them and sell them to the local "corner store". You can but them already cooked or uncooked.

Sharon Eisenzopf:
Has he tried saurkraut perogies? This one is easier to make. But already made saurkraut, your grocery store should have it, and put that in the middle of dough. Just drain it off the day before. I find it to wet to put in the dough. My next door neighbour makes home made saurkraut. Very deliciouse.
- 206.172.22.55 - Monday, April 29, 2002 at 02:18:32 (UTC)
Sharon Eisenzopf:
Don't forget the sour cream for the perogies. Thats a must.
- 206.172.22.55 - Monday, April 29, 2002 at 02:19:28 (UTC)
Irene:
I should try that for myself. My husband doesn't like saurkraut. I had a boss a long time ago who made her own saurkraut. Your right it is delicious.

Thanks to the great teacher Marilu in Colorado, I have learned to copy and paste a message unto the Gottscheer Plauderzimmer. YIPPEE! A first for this Gottscheerin in Minnesota and for that Marilu I say DANKE, DANKE und noch einmal DANKE. Another huge lesson learned.

Hi Franz Schmuck. Yes I know the village of Mitterdorf by Tschermoschnitz. Have been there many times and hope to do it many more times. In fact, I was born quite close to Mitterdorf.
Here is my e-mail wyants@mlecmn.net. I would very much enjoy hearing from you. Auf Wiederhöhren und Danke.

Dan: I am thinking that there will be quite a few Gottscheers heading for Lukan's in Hawley the last weekend in June. No doubt you know it is the annual meeting of the Gottscheer Heritage and Genealogy Assn. (GHGA) a non-profit association established, 10 years ago this June, for the purposes of preserving "the history, culture and family records of Gottschee", and what a job we have and continue to do too.
If you need any further information let me know. Hope you can join the celebration, not to mention the wonderful food (there is the magic word - food), which is always on the table at Lukan's.
Nice to meet you Dan. Where do you live and to which village or villages in Gottschee might you have a connection?

Hi Trix Nice to meet you as well. I have joined the GHGA just recently & health permitting I will be at Hawley Penn. in June. I live in Augusta, New Jersey. Thats in the extreme northwestern part of the state. This is a list of just the villages my grandparents were born in - Widerzug,Bresowitz,Turn,Saderz,Tanzbuchel,Warmberg,Schaeflein,Altenmark,Vertatsch. I am just learning about about my gottscheer heratige. My Mother never talked about it. She was born here & she told me that her parents talked little about it as well. I am sending for Ridy's book so I can learn about what there lives were like. Any help I can get will be ver much appreciated. Thank you so much. Dan
