I am looking into what cities my father's parents came from. They immigraded to the US prior to W.W.I.

My aunts say their mother was Gottscheer. I am almost certain that their father was also Gottscheer.

I live in the Cleveland, ohio area. My grandparents were married in Cleveland (probably at Holy Trinity Catholic church on Woodland Ave) on 12-2-1916. We do not know when and how they met.

Josef Petschauer (11-17-1881 to 10-22-1944). He was naturalized from the King of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1925. Father was also Josef.
One of his sisters was Veronika Schauer (Husband Ernest W. Schauer, Children Ida and Ernest A.) who lived in Chicago. He was living with her family in the 1910 Census. I might have located him at the Ellis Island site as coming from Obermosel in 1907 to New York. He had other brothers and sisters here but we do not know who they are.

Maria Deutschmann (9-16-1888 to July 1976) She was naturalized from Jugoslavia in 1954. Father was probably Matthias. She definity was first in New York. Her sister was married to a Greek flourist and they lived in Long Island. Her name was Sophie Kormusis (5-16-1897 to 1-21-1988). She died in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. My Aunt Bertha thinks Sophie had one daughter and she knows her Aunt Sophie had a Gottscheer book. Again I might have located her at the Ellis Island site as coming from Mitterburg in 1912 to New York. Mitterburg does not appear to be Gottscheer. Although it might be in reality Mitterbuchberg. My Aunt Bertha says her mother spelled her surname a different way. Had a Z in it.

Does any of this ring a bell with anyone. I do have social security number, but I would have to send away for three SS5 cards and they are now $27.00 a piece. I also know about LDS having the microfilms of the Gottscheer church records. I am also in contact with the Gottscheer club of Cleveland.

PS:

Petschauer
German: habitational name for someone from a place named Petschau (Czech Becov) near Marienbad (Czech Mariánské Lázne) in the Czech Republic.

Petsch
German (of Slavic origin): from a pet form of a Slavic form of Peter.

-au
Meaning: meadow (?)
Examples: Lindau, Haguenau, Hanau
Explanation: Towns with such names indicate that the settlement grew in a low-lying meadow with water flowing through it. (Therefore Petschau in the city of Peter in a meadow with a river.)

The Czech name of the City is Becov nad Teplou which mean the city of Peter on high above the warm river Tepla. The river is warm because it is in the Karl Bath region of Europe and hot springs mix with the river.

Schauer means an inspector. It must come from schau in German to look, therefore looker.

Frank Petschauer
