Dear Mr. Hogler,

In 1860 no battle took place in Vicenza (only in 1509, 1801, 1805, and 1848). So it is not clear in which way your GGG-Uncle, Josef Hogler was killed there. You suspect it was while serving in the Austrian Army during the Italian Unification. Vicenza belonged to the Austrian province of Venezia, and in 1866 became part of Italy. In the north of nowadays Italy there were greater battles in 1859, and 1866.

Apart from this, for starting genealogical research in Austrian War Archives in Wien you have to know place and year of birth of the person in question, and/or the military unit in which he was on duty. Without this initial data no research can be started.

Sincerely yours

Dr. Christoph Tepperberg
