Betreff: Gottscheer Bulletin Board -Darowitsch

Liebe Darja,

Knut Reinhart

We would like to get in contact with this family.

Can  you help? It would be very, very much appreciated by this in Slovenia. Imagine renewing a friendship with the Luscher Gottscheer Family who re-settled to this area in 1941. Our family lived in Deckmansdorf not far from Königsberg.  I was a child at the time.

I am hopeful that we can help in making the connection and I THANK YOU for  your help.

Alttabor

Culture 1 Comment »

My father was born in the village of Alttabor and according to the resettlement records his family was the only one there in 1941. I have been researching the village via the internet with very little results. Fortunately my father and I visited Alttabor in May on the GHGA tour and nothing remains. Since visiting the location of the village my interest has been renewed and I’m wondering if anyone has any information on Alttabor or better yet pictures, please let me know.

Inquiry from Verena Hirtner

Geneaology, Photos No Comments »

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am looking for my real grandfather Frank Juran and in this context I found the Gottscheer Pages. Unfortunately I know just a few things about him, for example that he had worked in Turnau, Upper Styria, Austria for a while at the company Hausenbichl and that he got to know my grandma Maria Hirtner. Out of this relationship my father was born in july 1952, but he also know nothing about his real father except that Frank Juran emigrated to the USA or Canada. I am not certain if he knew about my father’s birth. As I looking for my family tree I would be glad if someone can give me some information. Be it that he is still alive, what I hope, he might to be about 80-90 years old. Please contact me at: verena@hirtner.com.

Thanks a lot !!!

Best regards/Mit freundlichen Grüßen,

Verena Hirtner

I received the following today from Donald Reindl of Slovenia:

Dear Mr. Kump,

I just wanted to let you know that I’m slowly entering photos of
some Gottschee tombstones at the following site:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gsr&GScid=2337520

I hope this may be of use to you or your forum members in your
genealogical research. I still have about 75 additional photos to
post for Koprivnik/Nesselthal, so this selection will grow over the
comuni weeks.

Best wishes from Slovenia,

Wittreich family of Kotschen

Geneaology No Comments »

Hi all …

Glad to see this site and I am looking forward to finding great information and tidbits here in my newly-acquired fascination for tracking my family history.

I am currently seeking any information regarding the Wittreichs, who I believe lived in Kotschen (#4?).

I am the granddaughter of Agnes Wittreich (b. 08-May-1887), who we believe had 10 brothers and sisters.  The other family names (sisters’ married names?) associated with my grandmother are Rozic (Rositsch) / Zekoll / Herbst / Schneider / Zager.  I am planning on making a trip to our local Family History Center to do some research on Kotschen birth records.  Some of the other family names I mentioned above have been loosely associated with parents named Jacob Wittreich and Maria Stampfl, but it does not appear consistent across the families.  And I have not yet located any confirmation of Agnes’ parents names.  The only clues I have are a possible John/Johan Wittreich for her dad (death certificate) and Anna as her mom (ship manifest).  Agnes married my grandfather, Johan Agnitsch, whose family we did locate in Hinterberg.

Any information at all on any of the above names is greatly appreciated!

Following is an exchange of messages with David Juricic.  Email him if you can help!

“I am David Juricic.  My dad said that there was a Terlep connection in our family but did not elaborate.  I posted a message on the Juricic, (Juresic), Kraker, Jaksa, Terlep,Family website in 2006, but i am prevented from posting any new messages.  I have updated the Juricic genealogy, but still no Terlep connection.  Do you know how we are related ?  I will send the Juricic Genealogy if you want it.”

Here are the posts David refers to.

Inquiry about the Hoge family

Cherie Ludwig Kmetz writes,
I have been trying to trace back my family tree and have run into some references of Gottscheer and I seem to remember a mention of this area when I was young.  i am looking for information on the Hoge family.  My great grandfather was Andreas Hoge and came to the US on/around 1897 and settled in Cleveland, Ohio.  Any input or direction would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks

Lukanitsch — births in Altenmarkt in 1820 to 1860

Geneaology No Comments »
Thanks to people searching Gottschee area parish records, I have much information on my Thometz roots.
In Chicago, Michael Thometz’s first daughter married John B Lukanitsch.  It is John B’s roots I seek now.
Michael Thometz was my 2 great grandfather, born in Doblice, Crnomelj parish in 1824, sailed in 1852 to the US, and died in Chicago in 1899.  John B Lukanitsch, who became son-in-law to Michael, was born in 1854 in the Austrian Empire, and died in Chicago in 1905.
John B came to the US circa 1869 as a teen.  He came with several brothers, sent away by their father who did not want them to be drafted into the Army for 7 years each.  Their father was not fond of the emperor.  The eldest son was caught in the draft, and we heard, served 7 years for each brother who left, becoming career military.
The family stories lack first names, and specific locations.  We were told Austrian Empire, and then Serbo-Croatian.

I  recently found John B Lukanitsch’s naturalization papers in New York county.  Shortly after he did that in January 1881, he travelled to Chicago to marry my great grandmother in June, 1881and lived there until his death.  As he seemed to know about the Thometz family in Chicago, I speculate that the families may have known each other back in what was then the Austrian Empire.  Else John B was really quick to meet the woman of his dreams when he relocated to Chicago!
John B’s witness for his naturalization was Michael Lukanitsch, born 1820 & naturalized in 1877.  Michael went to Europe at least twice in the 1890s, applying for a passport twice.  He gave his place of birth as either Altenmarkt or Draga, in Unterkrain, Austria.  His daughter Anna, travelling with him, was listed on the passport applications as being born in Altenmarkt, but after Michael first came to the US.  Michael was settled in New York City, and had the same occupation as John B, importer of files (tools).  At the time of John B’s naturalization, the two men lived at the same address in New York city.
My guess is that Michael is the uncle of John B, older brother to John B’s father.  In the CD of marriages that two people I know have, there is a marriage in 1819 of Johann Lukanitsch of Draga, Croatia, and Maria Rossman of Altenmarkt.  We figured out in modern names this is Stari trg ob Kolpi.  (in English, old market on the Kolpa River)
Guessing again, that couple could be the parents of Michael, born the year after their marriage.  I would like to find if Michael’s birth is recorded (Nov 12 or 20, 1820), or if his daughter Anna’s birth (July 26, 1859 per the passport applications) is recorded, with names of parents.  Michael first entered the US in November 1855, and was naturalized in 1877.  His daughter was born in Europe after Michael first came to the US.  He seemed to travel a lot in those days of month long crossings of the Atlantic.  The passport applications were lucky, as the US did not require them for travel in the 19th century, generally.
I think Altenmarkt is in Bela Krajina parish.  If Altenmarkt is not the birthplace, I do not know which of the several towns named Draga was meant.  The passport applications had lots of information, some of it contradictory.
Marilu has birth records for just one parish in Gottschee.  There are no Lukanitsch records in what she has.  Can anyone help me with searching for those two births, or other Lukanitsch births or marriages in Altenmarkt?,
