Maximilian M. Mische <rosswings@aol.com>
I am a technical writer in the software industry by profession. Otherwise, I am firmly committed to
capturing the stories of older Gottscheers about their life experience
in Gottschee - before it too late. I am also keenly involved in researching
my family tree and investigating various aspects of Gottsheer culture
and history (lately, this I am poking around in the Auersperg legacy and
in records of others who have visted and written about Gottschee over
the centuries. So you see I am quite involved.
I regularly publish articles in the Gottschee Tree Geneological Newsletter
and have written small book called "Gottschee Journey: Listening to the
Ghosts" available from the Gottscheer Research and Geneology Assn. of
which I am a director.
Cheers and happy hunting, while never forgetting our ancestry!

I'm so excited to find your site! I too am a Kump. My father's
name was Peter Kump (he died 6 years ago on the 6th of April).
His father's name was Ernest Kump. My grandmother's name was
Mary (Petche) Kump. Both of my grandparents came from
Gottscheer. I have been in touch with my mother to tell her
that I have found you on the web. Mom is full of stories about
my dad's family - stories which include names that everyone
else is mentioning here on your site.
If I get any response from this Email of mine, I'll write
back with 'tid-bits' about what my mom can recall. Are all
the rest of the Kumps as eccentric as my family is? Architects
artists, and chefs! Do we have some stories about the family
or what!
My dad's brother's name is Ernest jr. He lives in Switzerland.
My cousin Peter C. Kump lived in NY but recently died. I
have a brother and sister here in Calif. I also have one
cousin here in the state.
Keep in touch. I'd love to find out more about my family.

I previously asked if anyone had any information on the Matzelle family. I would also love to hear from anyone who knows my mom and dad...Vera & Peter Bell. My mother (Veronika Matzelle) was Miss Gottschee in 1956...as my brother Pete mentioned in his message. My parents owned the PINE HILL LODGE in Highland Lake, NY from 1961 through 1984.
This is definitely a cool site...it brings back alot of memories and takes me back to my childhood in Ridgewood (i.e., Myrtle Avenue, Glendale, German School, St. Mathias, etc..)!

I was amazed to find this site. My paternal grandmother was Magdalena Staudacher who was born in Neugereuth and migrated to the United States before the turn of the century. She married and settled in Ridgewood, NY where she and Anton Manthey raised their family of five children. I was also raised in Ridgewood, attending St. Aloysius church. I toured Germany and Austria last summer and met with my father's cousins, Ingrid Staudacher in Berlin and Liselotte Staudacher in Salzburg. I'm pleased to find more Staudachers.

Hello Gottscheers!
I stumbled across your website by accident. It's so nice to see you out there still carry the 'alte Heimat' in your hearts.
My family is also from Gottschee. The name is Stonitsch. My grandfather was the jeweler and watchmaker, with the store near the church in Gottschee.
The family is Austrian from Vienna and Villach. The Wenzel family from Lilienfeld. The Wenzel family also had relatives in Mosswald.
Unfortunately most of my family has passed away. My Mother ' Edith' was born in Gottschee in 1914, her brother Erich in 1927. My grandfather Joseph died in 1944.
After WWII my family had lost contact with all relatives. If anyone out there knows anything about my family please write to me snailmail, (My E-mail is unreliable, it loses messages)
I would very much appreciate your help. Thank's Gottscheers. I'll check this page regularly from now on. GLAD I FOUND YOU!

I'm searching for family history on my grandparents, Jacob Peternel and Josephine Hoferle Schauer. Jacob was originally from around Laibach, Austria, now Ljbyana, Yugoslavia. Josephine was from the Gottschee area, born in Altlag, I believe. Both immigrated separately and met and married in the Territory of New Mexico, town of Gallup. If you have any info, please contact me. Thanks!

My grandmother was a Bartelme from Oblerschein. My great aunt Sophie married a Kump and they lived in Austria during and after the 2nd world war. My mother said her cousin came for a visit in the late

I just stumbled onto your home page. My grandfather, Michael Samide immigrated from Gottschee in 1907. He lived in New York City where he met my grandmother, Josefa Tschampa who also immigrated from Gottschee. They were married in 1914 and lived at 797 1st Avenue now the site of the U.N. Later her younger sister Pauline joined them in the U.S. and married a Joseph Jakiltsch ( I assume also from Gottschee). I look forward to joining your group with the hope I can better understand my ancestry.

Jeffery Hirsch <Jstone5@aol.com>
We have begun looking for more information on the Hirsch family. My paternal great grandfather came to Cleveland from Gottschee in 1895 (or thereabouts). We believe he was born in 1872. His wife, Sophia Rositsch, we believe was from Shoflein (although we also found an address listing something that reads 'Warnberg Gottschee Kranz'). We believe her mothers last name was Jesula. My great-great grandfather's first name was John. It is interesting to read the connections between Cleveland and Brooklyn, NY, which explains a lot of very old pictures which contain people from Brooklyn (unfortunately, they have writings in german). Any help from anyone in narrowing down our 'compass point' involving our ancestry would be greatly appreciated.

I just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed this sight for the past month. I have learned so much about the Gottscheers and the heritage we each share. I hope everyone will get into the spirit of Gottscheer research and share with all us the unique experiences that they have had as Gottscheer. We all have some of the same basic values and we should be proud of them. We shouldn't waste the opportunity to share our talents with the GHGA. They need our help in supporting the many projects they are undertaking. I'd like to thank the Kumps and Staudachers for the wonderful site and how professional it is. It is a credit to all Gottscheers everywhere. I just want people to know that if they are working in Ebental Parish that I will help them in anyway possible to find there ancestors and willing to do that on my own time and free of charge. I'm hoping to find a way to download the Ebental Parish on to the Gottscheer site so that all will have the opportunity to work in that area. Please help in anyway to promote Gottscheer heritage and to share it with those of us who were not so fortunate to live in Gottscheer communities.

My boss matched me up with Steve to gleam information about his job, because the networking area is where I hope to be working in soon. It
struck me as unusual, but after speaking with Steve for a few hours I felt I had known him all along. I will always remember Steve and have nice thoughts about him. He is missed by us all.

Wow - quite an amazing find; I had long believed myself to be the only living person under 35 who'd actually heard of Gottschee. Having exhausted the Anglo-Irish genealogy trail, I hadn't expected there to be any source anywhere in the world on Gottschee. My paternal grandmother, whose maiden name was Kurre, was born there about 1890. Other names that I think appeared in the tree were Tramposch and Rabuse (sp?).

I believe both my paternal grandparents are from the Gotschee area, the Kinkopf/Luror's from Oberwarmberg and the Schweiger/? from Oberwetzenbach. I also have letters from the 20's and 30's from Gotscheer region from the family of Turk with their address if anyone is interested. They were addressed to Fannie Kinkopf, my great aunt who migrated along with her two sisters.
Also, I am cousin to Verderber's whose name I once saw on the family lists.
I am in posession of 1939 Gotscheer Kalendar but I can't read it. Does anyone have knoweldge of my Schweiger/Kinkopf families?

My grandfather, Ludwig Kresse, was born in Gottschee in 1900. My grandmother is Sophie Roethel, born in NYC, but her family was from Gottschee also. They met and married in Cleveland Ohio during the '20s. In perusing this guest book, I spotted a few names from my own family tree: Stimpfel and Rom. Does anyone out there have Kresses in their family tree?

Great site! I am the genealogist in the family and only recently stumbled into the Gottshee story and history. My husband's family is from Cleveland. His father (Gliebe) is the Gottsheer and his mother is Slovenian. The grandfather was Joseph Gliebe married to Sophie Schober. Joseph Gliebe's parents were Mathias (I think) and Magdelena (don't know the maiden name). Unfortunately, in Cleveland, there were two Magdelena Gliebe's (according to the cesus records both were widows of a Mathias). Joseph Gliebe's brother John married Rose Herbst. He had three sisters.Does this ring any bells?

I was very happy to see that Kocevarji have such nice pages and are active. I would like to add few historical facts about Slovenes. We are decendents of Etruscans and Venetians -pre_Roman culture. When I read the history about Slovenia and that we came from Russia I became very skeptical about how much people really know about this land. It appears that present Slovenia was populated by Slovenes at least about 1,000 years BC. Well preserved golden Pirgy leaf and the writing on Zagreb Mummy show the Slovene language existed in written form at least in 700BC. Ther are three books written on the subject. If interested please contact me.
Please continue the good work.
It is interesting to note that ou rhose in the vilage of Boldraz in Belakrajina where I was born was called "Pri Stalcar-jih" at Stalcer's. Perhaps this name is Kocevar's.

Further to my last message of August 1998, I find that maternal grandmother was Loescher, Ursula. Paternal grandmother may have been Maria Gerbitz. Grandfather Joseph Kinkopf who came to USA in late 1800s and possibly Grandfather Mathias Schweiger or other Schweiger of Oberwetzenbach. Does anyone know Maria Schweiger Stimpfl of Flatbush NY who might be my fathers 1st cousin? Or Rosi Kinkopf of NY State - Maria's sister but I have no address. I just recently discovered we were Gotscheers. This is a wonderful site. Thank you. It is really thrilling to begin to unravel the mystery of your ancestors.

A friend gave me this address, because she used the term Gottscheer in a conversation not long ago, and I recognized it from my childhood. My aunt was always making mention of Gottscheer while explaining some food or music.
My Moms maiden name is Sliber, from Glendale, NY. Her moms maiden name was Kofler, same area.
I am so excited to see both on the Surname list! I am hooked!
Thank you for this great opportunity!

I believe you are my long lost first cousin. Your mother died when you were only 6 years old. Are you brothers in the US?
My sister Maria Mausser still lives in Austria, Barnbach.
Please contact me. Would love to hear from you. There are not too many of us left.

Thank you, I've found your pages very interesting. I will be passing some of the text and images onto my mother, Slawi Oswald, who was born in 1924 and lived in Rieg until she was about 17 years old.
Does anyone remember my mother or her family or have any further information on the village of Rieg please?

My mother, a Gottscheer, is Berta Matzelle from "Mosche" (Tschermoschnitz) in what is now Slovenia. I grew up in Richmond Hill, NY and spent many wonderful hours at the Gottscheer Klubhaus. I am very much interested in the Gottscheer history. My parents, Henry Pirwitz and Berta Matzelle Pirwitz live here in San Jose, CA as well.
